Lords of de Royans #4

Great Protector

Rate this book

1402 A.D.

Eighteen years ago, Sir Richmond le Bec, a knight in the service of Henry of Bolingbroke, was tasked with a mission of great importance. Young Henry had an affair with a married woman who bore him a child, and the woman's husband vowed to kill both his wife and the child she birthed. Richmond was charged with taking the baby to safety and acting as her protector. Even though Richmond has risen to become Henry's greatest knight, the protection of his illegitimate daughter has been his most important task. For eighteen years he has watched over the girl, ensuring her health and safety, as she is raised by another family, unaware of her true identity.

The Lady Arissa de Lohr has always loved Sir Richmond, the man who she believes is only a family friend. The powerful, handsome knight has always been in her heart and on the day of her eighteenth birthday, she can no longer keep her feelings to herself. Although she has been pledged to Whitby Abbey since infancy and knows that, upon reaching maturity, she will be delivered to the abbey as a novice nun, she has no desire to be sequestered away from Richmond. She loves the man, and she will have him.

Richmond, too, is deeply in love with the young lady he was assigned to protect. As she became a woman, his feelings turned from friendly concern to romantic admirer. Confessing their feelings to each other is only the beginning of their adventure, for dark forces are at work against both Arissa and Richmond, threatening to tear the lovers apart.

King Henry goes to battle against Owen Glendower, who has been made aware of the king's secret illegitimate daughter and seeks to claim the girl to use against her father. Richmond is caught in the middle, protecting Arissa from the Welsh Rebels even as he fights Henry to keep her from being committing to Whitby.

Intrigue, battles, life, death and love blend in the greatest story yet of true love and the lengths Richmond will go to in order to have his beloved Arissa. He is more than willing to risk his life for the her in this epic tale of ultimate romance.

First Impressions
Great Protector is the last book in her “Lords of de Royans”, but it can easily be read as a standalone. As I haven’t read this series or the previous books so it doesn’t really reflect on your reading experience as most of her books are written like this except for her Wolfe family. I will admit that I had grabbed this book as a kindle freebie, and I just started reading it. What I really like about this author is the way she can pull you into a story so quickly and captivate your attention. She builds a rich medieval setting, in this case, we are dealing the House of Lancaster era in England. This also is dealing with the time period of the battles involving Wales. I also was intrigued by the setup of the story as we are dealing with a forbidden romance, a touch of taboo, and age gap. So if these tropes aren’t your thing, then this story will probably not work for you. I was really intrigued by how she built up the story here and the way in which it developed.

Summary
Great Protector starts with a promise made. King David has had a child with a married woman, and her husband has threatened to kill the babe. So David asks his close friend, Richmond, to be her protector and to defend her and care for her, no matter the cost. Then we jump ahead 18 years, where that one babe has now turned into a beautiful young woman, Arissa, who is destined for the Abbey. Arissa is a woman of life and passion and to be around people. Ever since she was sixteen she has been in love with Richmond, and their friendship has turned into something more very recently. Richmond, knows that his feelings for Arissa are forbidden but he can’t help but want to hold her and embrace her and give into the passion and love that he feels. But he also knows their relationship is forbidden unless he can convince her father to let her marry him instead of going to the Abbey. Richmond and Alissa go on a journey of challenge, and growth, of learning what their relationship is capable of and conquering against the odds that are stacked against them.

What I Loved
Great Defender was a solid romance of a read. I really had a fun time with this one. I was highly intrigued to see how these two would be able to find a way to be together. I had seen some mixed reviews so I was a bit worried about where this story would go, but I did find myself capitalizing on the romance and the tropes that come into play. There is such a level of affection and respect that grows between the characters. I also felt like the taboo theme was handled pretty well, I mean he has had a father-like role in some ways or her, but from what I could gather, it was closer to a friendship than a “father-daughter” like of a role. I really loved how alphamellow our hero is. He is protective and a warrior, but he was so tender with Alissa. His treatment of her was so endearing, and they had these sweet intimate moments that were so arresting. I found the story to be engaging, and the author really captivated well on the history without it affecting the romance. It’s what I adore about Kathryn Le Veque, and why I respect her way of writing medieval romance. She can write well about historical events without it being too heavy for the reader. It’s such a natural flow. The romance was beautiful and even though I had some issues, it was a solid read for any historical lover.

What I Struggled With
First off—ignore these covers haha I have never liked them so just ignore them because the writing is very good, I do wish the covers could be more polished as it would attract more readers. As for the story, the main issue I had with this book that kept it from being a higher rating is the ending. It was super abrupt and needed an epilogue. Its a HEA but not satisfying in any way and I felt like Richmond and Alissa deserved more.

Overall View
I found Great Defender to be a majestic and poignant story that fed my heart and rocked my soul. It’s a romance that delivers many beautiful aspects and will pull you more into this intriguing world that the author has created.

This is a sweet medieval romance. Richmond and Riss were perfect together. The only thing I disliked was the ending. It was too abrupt, we were left hanging when a nice short epilogue would have fixed it. I did like the story, besides the romance there's also a lot of action and interesting historical info.

5***** Another great story from Kathryn Le Veque. This book shows us that even when there is a large age gap love can still work. The hero is told to protect a baby girl he does that but as she matures into a woman his love for her changes. She has always loved him but needs him to see her as a woman. She is rather spoiled but that is his fault. There is lots of political intrigue and some very eccentric characters. Kathryn has been a bit cruel with the ending but I will look at other books to see if the characters show up again. A very enjoyable book.

Richmond is given the illegitimate 5 days old daughter of future Henry IV to take into safekeeping. He brings her to the earl of Tambourin and his wife to raise as their own. Arissa is destined to be committed to Whitbby Abbey as a nun after she turns 18. The action stars when it is the eve of Orissa's 18th birthday with a huge party planned. We learn that Richmond has had a hand in mentoring and protecting her this entire time.
So they determine that they are in love and want to marry. Riss, having no knowledge of her royal birth, thinks it is as simple as asking her father, the earl. Richmond realizes that he must ask Henry IV, but as a knight, he is beneath her in station. That would be enough in the way of issues, but there are several more. One is that the day they declare their love, Richmond learns that Henry has betrothed him to Henry Hotspur Percy's sister. Another is that there is a persistent lord who thinks that Riss is made for a man's pleasure, not the cloister of an abbey. Another is that Lambourn is attacked by a lord who thinks Richmond tried to kill his odious son (see persistent lord). Also, the Welsh rebellion has learned of Arrisa's existence and they kidnap her to use to influence Henry. Also, she learns who her mother is and where she has been. It is just stuffed filled with problem after problem.
Honestly, this book did seem tedious at time. It seemed way too long and I think over 50% took place around her birthday, which seemed very drawn out. Also, I questioned if she was to live a life of austerity, why tempt her with what she would be missing when she became a novice. I really disliked how rushed the ending was and left me with questions. The author could have left out some aspects of the party so that we could have a more hearty conclusion.
The weirdest part was the subplot of Arissa's sexually curious, voyeuristic 12 year old sister. Totally unnecessary and bizarre.

This is a story about true and unending love, about two people who love each other completely. It is full of compassion, enlightenment and humour.
The enormously heroic, huge and extremely handsome Sir Richmond le Bec was entrusted with a mission of extreme importance eighteen years ago, and has done so, protecting the exquisitely beautiful, spirited Lady Arissa de Lohr.
Arissa has loved Richmond for as long as she can remember and has to tell him before it is too late, and since she has matured into a young woman, Richmond can no longer deny his love for her either. But theirs will be a long and dangerous journey to happiness.
Together they take destiny by the hand, to be and stay together.
This is a slow simmering tale of love and passion, but the story line of this adventure takes you in one direction and then another as the secondary plot unravels.
Full of wonderful characters, heroics, humour and love, Kathryn explains the history surrounding this time without ruining this romantic adventure. She is a wonderful wordsmith, who brings this book to life.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Going into this I was a bit weary given the idea that the Le Bec falls in love with Riss while he is concidered a father figure. That idea alone was a bit "bloody hell how is this going to go about? Thats a bit of a touchy issue no?" But I must say the author, Kathryn Le Veque handled it quite well and not once was I offended, grossed out, or put off by the book.

I quite enjoyed this book; up until the end which is why it got 4 stars instead of 5. I wished she had written more! It feels a touch unfinished, why not write up until the very end and the new begining? Surely if she had done that it would have been the perfect 5 out of 5.

The characters were hopelessly romantic and knightly (which is exactly why you read romance no?) Oh and the humor! How many times did I stop reading to laugh? I cant count. The plot too was brilliant.

Alas, just a bit more and it would have been utterly spectacular.

I thought this was a beautiful and very romantic love story. Before I purchased this book, I read a lot of the reviews on Amazon and while it was highly rated, many readers weren't happy that the story ended abruptly and without an Epilogue. In the version I downloaded, there was a nice note from the author immediately following The End along with links to other stories in this series where we can meet the children of Arissa and Richmond. Prior to this book, I had read The Beast. In The Beast, there is an extended Epilogue featuring Arissa and Richmond in their later years. This couple had a very happy life!

3. Best I can do. Starts out a story of moderate interest. The heroine is a fribble, the hero stalwart, all in a slo-mo way. Then we get into politics, the king's obsession with Wales, things heat up. The heroine - a valuable bit of political property - has a brief period of enlightenment which almost immediately segues into her becoming a world class weeper; really there is no end to her weeps. More strife and trickery lead to a happy ending, at least for those still alive. If you don't mind incessant weeping you will probably enjoy this more than I did.

What a lovely story Ms. Le Veque brought us one more time! I agree that the ending was abrupt and rather disappointing, but since I've read The Beast previously it was ok.

The Beast (de Russe family) involves the youngest daughter of Richmond and Arissa, and in the books epilogue we see them safe and sound. We also find out about Richmond and Arissa's life since the injury.
So that epilogue satisfied me to no end now, because it works for two books that I enjoyed so very much!

I loved this book! I’ve been reading KLV since the turn of 2018, and enjoying them, about 35 so far. Most ones I read become
My favourites as did this one. I recall shouting ‘No!’ At one point and the end wasn’t what I expected. I would have preferred a long ending, I wouldn’t change it. I think Richmond is my favourite knight, he’d still be a toyboy for me but he’s delicious 😉 Oh and where’s Le Bec book 2!!!!!!!?

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.

Eighteen years of protection, developing into a great love for his young charge. A love that, when tested, saw the Mightest Knight of England, betray his country, to ensure her freedom. However, being the greatest tactician England had ever known, saw that the ending was not what the Welsh forces had envisaged, having the tables turned during the final battle.
A love story, and so, so much more!

Loved it!!!

What an amazing love story. Richmond's dedication, Arrissa's love and innocence make for a touching story. Also the story line full of intrigue and decite was mind blowing. I would have liked to have been an epilogue, to give the reader an idea of what their future would be. Kathryn spoiled me with her epilogue

As a fan of Kathryn LeVeque, I look forward to her stories and this does not disappoint. Protecting the King's bastard daughter leads to great rewards for Richmond le Bec.

Le bec

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As usual Kathryn Le Vevque has out done herself. I recommend this book and this author to anyone with a 5 star rating. Now for a 2nd Le Bec novel I am awaiting with much anticipation. I only regret Le Bec's serious injury.

I picked this up b/c of the guard/ward troupe

The narration was good, I enjoyed the male narrator.

As for the story, I should have stoped at 30% when Arissa and Richmond first come together and I felt fully jipped by the scene. But, I pressed on and now wished I hadn't. It was just an over all frustrating story.

This is a 14hr listen time and for all of that not a whole hell of a lot happens between the two main characters, in terms of the growth of their relationship. This was over all a huge disappointment of a story. The author was going for the sweeping grandeur of the time and forgot the two main characters. It did always follow their love and devotion towards each other but there was SOOO much missing from their newly formed adult relationship that I just felt really let down by this story.

And the side story with Gavin, his wife and Arissa's friend, that was off putting to me and made me not like Gavin much at all.

Ug and the last 35min (she goes from being at the Abby to not with zero transition) and then the last 10min were so rushed, and it seriously felt like this was going to be a tragic end and not the HEA everyone wants. Then the last 2min you get the "oh here is an HEA for you" thrown at you almost like the author really wanted to write the tragic end but remembered who her audience was at the last moment. The author set up the possibilities for this epic love story and when Richmond and Arissa finally get to start having it, bam the story ends. The reader just barley gets to see their happy and then the author yanks it away.

So I will most likely not be coming back to this author for a bit. That was just not enjoyable for me.

Great unique love story.

I loved this book. The main characters, Richmond and Arissa were so real and deep. Other characters like Gavan , Emma, Daniel, Tad, Penelope, Ragene, and others were equally strong. There are a lot of twists and turns in this book along with some secondary stories that make it interesting and exciting. I worried about the length of the book when I first started reading it but as I moved through it, the length began to make sense. There was just so much going on. Age does not matter in love. Richmond was assigned by the king to care for Arissa his bastard daughter when she was 5 days old. Over the years his duty to protect became much more and Arissa had the same feeling for him. I won’t spoil the story. You will love it.

Thoughts about this,

No spoilers. I have been reading so many of this author's storys this past month, Sometimes she gives an Epilog. On this one she didn't and I need more! Then there a tendency to hustle through the last 30 pages of the book.

In this book I felt cheated towards the end. I needed to see how he got well. I guess I was looking for more closure. The story was epic. But I thought they might have met up with the king. I would read again and already have the next one ready to read. This a 4.4 for me

LeVeque’s Le Bec is Spectacular

Wonderful history woven into the fiction of this great knight and his forever love; this pair’s unusual May-Autumn love story is a joy to read. Thank you, KL, for another epic story, and especially where even the enemies deserve their due of respect. I loved this one. I loved reading bout their daughter, too; and the cameo of these two as mature parents.

This World and BEYOND

Across and Richmond had a love that was from this world and beyond . He was her protector since she was 5 days old up until she turned 18 years old. He began to love her in a romantic way since her 16 birthday . When she became 18 she admitted her love for him.

Another brilliant story by Kathryn. You never know how her stories are going to end. Although you convince yourself that the author will give you a happy ending, the events in the book don’t allow you to think it is actually possible! OMG! What an amazing rollercoaster of a ride with Arissa and Richmond. I absolutely loved it!

Hum

Can’t say I enjoyed this story as much as some other books. For a book this long it seemed slow at times and vague at times. The ending seemed rushed as if the writer didn’t know how to wrap up the tale. This does not seem to be Kathryn Le Veque usual writing.
