A USEFUL INTRODUCTION TO, AND DEFENSE OF, CHIROPRACTIC

Dr. Terry A. Rondberg is a leader of the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA), an organization he founded in 1989; he is also the founder of The Chiropractic Journal.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 1996 book, “true chiropractic began in 1895. To date, millions of people have benefited from this non-medical, drug-free health care. Chiropractic is the largest natural primary health care profession in the world. It’s one of the most praised yet most misunderstood of all the health care disciplines, despite the fact that more than twenty-five million Americans utilize it each year. It’s practiced by 50,000 doctors around the world and is licensed in every state in the Union.” (Pg. 7)

He clarifies, “Contrary to popular misinformation, the Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) doesn’t force the misaligned vertebrae back into place but he or she facilitates the body’s correction of nerve interference. During the adjustment, the sublaxated vertebrae are unlocked and released from their misaligned positions. The body’s inborn intelligence is called upon to shape the spine. When this happens, the vertebrae return to their proper alignment and the normal nerve supply is restored. This allows one to achieve maximum healing potential with a complete nerve supply.” (Pg. 20)

He notes, “Chiropractors don’t treat symptoms. Our job is to locate the cause of dis-ease, the nerve interference, and correct it. Frequent adjustments may be required at the beginning. As your condition improves, the number of adjustments will decrease and you’ll be placed on wellness care. Don’t expect nerve interference to be corrected in a few visits. It will take continued adjusting to be certain the vertebrae have returned to their proper position and your muscles and ligaments can continued to hold them firmly in place.” (Pg. 57)

He recounts, “In 1994, the American Heart Association (AHA) generated a great deal of publicity by announcing that researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine … wanted to know about those patients who had suffered a stroke within 24 hours of cervical manipulation. According to the AHA, the study showed that there was a ‘small but significant risk’ of a stroke occurring within twenty-four hours after cervical manipulation… the story was reported with sensationalism… chiropractors were put in the worst light imaginable… here’s the truth… While 486 neurologists were questioned (all of whom are in direct competition with chiropractors), only 177 physicians responded and of those, only 37 claimed they had seen cases in which there might be a connection between cervical manipulation and the onset of a stroke… What we have is an all-too-common LEAP OF FAITH by the media regarding an AHA article or study. Indeed, there has been the extremely rare occurrence of stroke following a cervical manipulation, statistics show one stroke per several million. Ini any procedure, there is an element of risk… but statistically, your chance of dying from a bee sting or being killed by lightning is more likely.” (Pg. 60-61)

He acknowledges, “Some patients may feel discomfort after their first adjustment, ranging from a headache to just general fatigue. In almost every case, this feeling goes away within the next couple adjustments. This discomfort is often due to a detoxification of the body after adjustments. As poisons leave the system, they could create a headache or slight head cold, even a slight fever and a feeling of lethargy. Muscles may become sore after being adjusted. You may feel sore like you had a workout at the gym. This condition is always temporary and disappears as your muscles gain strength and flexibility.” (Pg. 68-69)

In a concluding chapter, he summarizes, “Chiropractic has many basic principles upon which all its philosophy, art and science is based. Those listed here are some of the most important… If you accept the major premise, the other principles fall into place almost automatically… THE MAJOR PREMISE: A Universal Intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence. THE SECONDARY PRINCIPLES: *The expression of this Intelligence through matter is the chiropractic meaning of life… *A living thing has an Inborn Intelligence within its body, called Innate Intelligence… *The function of Innate Intelligences is to adapt universal forces and matter for use in the body, so that all parts of the body will have coordinated action for mutual benefit…. *Interference with the transmission of Innate Forces causes dis-ease.” (Pg. 127-128)

This book will be of keen interest to those studying Chiropractic.

The content is great. Some things could be further expounded upon, but its a great introduction to the chiropractic world.

One thing that tempts me to rate this lower (probably 3.5) is the seemingly ubiquitous typos. It seems every other page or so there is some sort of typing or formatting error. In once instance, he uses "too" instead of "two", and then he does the exact opposite a few pages later. He also used "are" instead of "our", and there was a sentence where the word "you" was missing entirely. You can figure out it is supposed to be there, but there is just an extra space where that word should be.

If you can overlook the typos, its worth the read.

Insightful book on chiropractic care and how it benefits the human body, from babies to the elderly. Rondberg wrote Chiropractic First in a very conversational tone, which made it easy to read and to digest the information. Overall, a good resource for anyone interested in how going to a chiropractor can help you.

However, I noticed tons of typos in this book. This man seriously needed a better editor because I found misplaced commas everywhere. If your information is as valuable as you say it is, you should take better care to make sure it's presented in the best possible way.

I agree with many of the other reviewers: great info, but the book has several typos.

As a chiropractic assistant, I carry a deep respect for this book. It is clear, concise, and its tone is one of empathy and care. That being said, prepare yourself for some editing errors and typos. I bought my book off of Amazon...still unsure as to whether I got a "bad batch".

Regardless of its grammar, this book is necessary. It highlights the power of your nervous system and how vital it is to your overall health and wellbeing. If you're struggling with any ailment, seek chiropractic care first. It will do you nothing but good.

This book was given to me by a chiropractor. His office was a weird place and this is a weird book. It acts as if God is nothing more than a living force that moves through us. As far as the science of chiropractic, there seems to be very little, but an awful lot of pagan worship of the body or the force that heals it or whatever. I'm not completely against spinal manipulation for helping with health problems, but I won't be joining their cult any time soon.

Simple way to explain basic chiropractic. My question is after 20 adjustments how do I tell if the Chiropractor is doing it correctly as more and more symptoms surface for a long inconvenient time (over a month)!?

I've never been adjusted and I am starting work with a chiropractic doctor so she gave me this to read. It's very very basic but a good look at what adjustments can do for your overall health.
