A comprehensive history on the life and death of Robert Simpson Neighbors (as written by descendent Kenneth F. Neighbors), who spent a majority of his life in the service of Texas as an Indian agent, attempting to procure a sustainable living space for the thousands of Natives who were displaced by encroaching settlers and intertribal warfare. Some of the verbiage is fairly dated (Kenneth has a proclivity towards lamenting the plight of the "savage") but the actions of his ancestor (though no means faultless on his own merit) definitely helped to save the lives of thousands, even if it meant gaining the ire of his fellow whites. This book also covers Neighbor's extensive career before becoming an Indian agent, as well as his excursion to El Paso, where he helped to establish a trail and organize the county.
