As any visitor to the beach knows, all sorts of treasures can be found if you know how and where to look. This beautifully illustrated pocket guide helps young beachcombers find and identify shells of animals commonly found on northeastern shores. Writing specifically with the Northeast in mind, author and artist Joanne Roach-Evans describes clams, limpets, whelks, mussels, oysters, periwinkles, and more, in gentle prose with just the right amount of scientific information to satisfy the budding explorer. Easy enough for preschoolers to understand, but scientific enough to satisfy a middle-schooler, Seashells will appeal to any beach lover.
Joanne Roach-Evans' first children's book "Seashells: Treasures from the Northeast Coast" was published in 2013 by Islandport Press. What an amazing little treasure this book is! So many times we find ourselves on the shore and questioning, what is the name of this shell? With this book in hand this summer will surely be one of learning and fascination as we easily and quickly identify the shells that previously left us wondering. Not only is the information amazing, the artwork shows a love of the subject that can only be nurtured by countless hours at the shore, picking up shells, turning over rocks and inhaling the wind. As I turned the lovely pages of this book I was reminded of my own adventures at the shore as a child where bucket in hand I wandered discovering tide pools, and treasures and learned to love the sea. Thank you so much Joanne Roach-Evans for bringing me back there, again and again, in the pages of your lovely little book.
