This beautifully produced anthology spans 2000 years of history and features individuals who, in their actions and in their lives, have stood above the common rank. 100 Saints are drawn from every corner of the world and every sphere of life. From doctor to missionary, farmer to homemaker, each one provides an inspirational example of the overwhelming strength of the human spirit, often in times of great adversity. To complete the treasury, a useful calendar of saints' days offers a unique overview of the Christian year.
I gave this book to my mother as a Christmas present a few years ago, and it has been out, "on the coffee table" since then. She and I have used it on rare occasions to look up specific information. It is a small book, with one or two pages per Saint, lavishly and beautifully illustrated.
I attended a lenten retreat earlier this year where the topic was the Saints, and because of that and other reasons I have recently become more interested in learning about the lives of the Saints. The Church New Year was September 1st, so I decided to read this book this year, starting on September 1st (St. Symeon the Stylite) and following the book through the Church year, 100 Saints in 365 days. Look for my final review in twelve months!
Picked up this book a while back at Barnes and Noble. I love it's use as a referece material. I have by no means read the entire book, but I use it often when I want to learn more about a particular saint, their symbols, and what they are the patron of. Beautifully crafted with full color pictures.
