Okay, first things first.

I HATE horror.

Not because I don't think it's any good, but because I'm an extremely suggestible person, and a single horror novel can have me on edge for months later. Horror about your family going missing and or getting killed? I'm OUT. PERIOD. Nope, not for me. EVER.

So, when I needed to read this for work, I was... not loving my job quite as much as usual. But by the end of the first day, when I had to stop, because work was over, I was very, very, veryveryvery tempted to just hole up in my house that night and finish the book ON MY OWN TIME, because I absolutely HAD to know what happened next. I had to. (I didn't get the chance, because we had other obligations. Sad face.) So, for the first time in my life, EVER, I was excited to come into work and finish a HORROR novel. Seriously. This never crossed my mind as a possible thing to happen in this lifetime.

The suspense is built so well, and the joy is in watching Olivia come to realize just how far she has been wrapped up in this, without her ever realizing. Highly recommended, even to people who don't like horror.

By far this has been one of my favourite books in the last year. It is full of spooky and the writing is excellent.

Such a great story. You know that type of book, when you get to the last 5 or 10 chapters that you find yourself almost skimming it because you can't wait to read what happens. That is this book.

This is the 1st time I've read this author and I can tell you I'm off to find more of her books.

This was a random selection based in part on a great cover, in part on its availability at the library and in part on my constant quest to find good female horror authors. Hightower has a background in crime fiction and it shows, because the book kept slipping into a police procedural. Another thing constantly evident was the fact that it was written by a female author...in an extreme case of write what you know all the major characters were female and oddly abbreviated (seriously, Amel and Ack, seriously, while male characters go by Bennington and Jamison), occasionally tipping the book over into chick lit, which is horrific in itself but in a totally different way. Olivia, the main character, overweight due to a horrendous diet and abhorence of any exercise (including avoiding stairs in favor of elevators despite claustrophobia, claustrophobia that conviniently vanishes later), a woman who is prone to unreasonability and being overemotional, a woman who finds logic annoying...is for all her shortcomings a fairly compelling lead, enough to make the readers take a journey with her as her whole world turns to a dark and pervasive nightmare. The book was well paced and pretty intense and had enough suspense and a sense of unease (without any overt gore or other genre trappings) to keep the pages turning all the way to a slightly unsatisfying ending. The title character should have been better explained, being the most interesting one. The writing was solid and capable. Adequate and fairly entertaining read that could have been much better. The quest for good female horror writers continues.

This book was barely a horror novel. I never had a shiver down my spine. Nor did the dark creep me out after a reading session.

I HATED how Hightower began the book. In my personal opinion, a book of this nature (ie. some dark entity haunting and harming the protagonists) should not reveal the supernatural entity at the bloody beginning of the novel! It really took the creepy-mysterious-suspense factor out of the book (not that having it really would have helped make the book scarier). The beginning was very slow, and nothing really picked up until about half way through. In terms of characters, Olivia definitely did NOT keep me reading. As much as I dislike children, Teddy, despite her idiotic name, proved more likable and compelling. And speaking of idiotic names, really now. Don't use nicknames that are plain stupid. Amel for Amelia? Okay, like Amel rhymes with camel? 'Cause that's the only way my brain will naturally pronounce that. And Ack for Ackerman? Really?! Just Really?! Final comment: the ending was far too sappy for me.

Also, Hightower's prose seemed a bit juvenile to me. However, this is hard for me to explain. While her premise was interesting enough for me to pick out this novel, the "ghost/dark entity mechanics" were not as well thought out as they should be. For example, the Piper was set up to seem like he had a pattern of doing things. But then towards the end of the novel, he is inexplicably random in his "hauntings" and seem to pick and choose his victims, instead of people making themselves victims by making a deal. This is not to say that an entity always has to have a way or pattern of doing their hauntings/harm. No, my problem is with turning a character that acts with a certain predictability into a character that acts on a whim.

I just finished “The Piper” by Lynn Hightower, which simply blew me away. I’ve known Hightower as a Shamus-Award-winning mystery writer, so I didn’t look into what I was buying at all. I started the Audible book, and was quickly introduced to Olivia James, a pragmatic Southern woman living in Los Angeles. She receives a strange phone call from her brother who assures her everything is all right, that he “has paid the piper.” The thing is, her brother has been dead for nine weeks.

I don’t buy scary horror stories like this or those by Stephen King. Truth is, I get scared. When I was a kid, I saw a movie called “Thirteen Ghosts,” and it haunted me for weeks. Best leave that stuff alone.

Still, I felt compelled to go on with “The Piper.” Olivia has lost her job, gone through a divorce, and is about to move back to her childhood home in Tennessee with her eight-year-old daughter. Olivia has inherited the house from her brother.

For me, alarms immediately sounded. Don’t go into that house where your brother died! Olivia, though, is a Southern steel magnolia, an agnostic of the paranormal. There has to be logical reasons behind the weird stuff that starts happening.

I listened in the car, as I walked the dogs, as I worked out, and even as I lay in the dark in bed just when I really shouldn’t be listening. I had to find out what happened. The reader, Xe Sands, voices each character, male and female, masterfully. The experience is akin to a listening to a great story around a campfire. Things in the story get worse and worse, yet you have to know what happens next. There isn’t a wasted sentence. Olivia James is a strong character in an overwhelming situation.

The story goes to amazing places—and it is truly frightening. I don’t think I can read another like this for a while. Yet I’m deeply satisfied. Now my only worry is can I find another audio book as great as this one?

Author warning: this review uses a food-based analogy as its basis. IDK, I'm hungry and it seems like a good idea.

The chances are good that you've read this book before. I've got nothing against the basic recipe that the story is based on: a return to a hometown after years away, followed by the discovery that family tragedies past and present are the result of supernatural evil. It's why I picked the book up in the first place: I'm familiar with the recipe of the story and I know that I enjoy it. But a good recipe still depends on the quality of the ingredients and The Piper uses only the most generic ones.

Like generic ingredients, the characters aren't bad but they also aren't particularly interesting or memorable. The Former Lover Turned Hometown Cop never develops beyond his function as a shiny reward to the hero for surviving all the tragedy and the Enigmatic Psychic drops hints behind her like bread crumbs, but doesn't actually seem to provide anything to the plot beyond fluff. When you throw in the Asshole Detective Who Suspects the Hero, a Bitter Childhood Rival, and an ex-husband who is just enough of a jerk not to provide a true rival for the Former Lover, you end up with a book full of decent but un-exciting characters. Add an ending that feels rushed and incomplete and the final result is full of inconsistencies and dangling threads that won't bother you for long because you'll forget you ever read it in the first place.

None of this should necessarily stop you from reading it - I finished it, after all - but it's the fast food equivalent of the starting recipe: you've had it before and chances are you'll have it again but you'll forget it as soon you're done.

I've been having a good run with books lately, and this is the cherry on my ice-cream sundae. Picked up this book by chance in the library. Thrilling, mysterious, page-turning and I did get a couple of chills, particularly at the beginning—very rare for me in a horror. The writing was perfection. The story was set up well. Loved the little sub-plots.

I have a lot of trouble with horror. I love movies but books have generally been subpar. Stephen King does nothing for me—boring as bat***t (That being said, I do love his dramas/thrillers). Never understood why Dean Koontz is so popular (really quite poor). Then I realised after reading this book, why—their work reads almost silly. The Piper has depth their stories lack. Emotion. And that inspires the thrills and chills. When I start fantasising about inserting myself into the story, it means I'm enjoying it at a deeper level (and this is a horror!).

I can't believe this has so few ratings considering how much overrated crap there is out there, stuff that attracts far more interest than it deserves. What is wrong with people, Goddamnit?! This is why the good stuff is getting harder and harder to find—bad taste!

I think this is the first time I've read a female horror writer. If this is the standard, we need many many more writing the genre.

The story sounds intriguing, so it's on my To-Do-One-Day list (if I remember) to borrow a dead tree edition from the library — I just couldn't listen to the audiobook. The narrator's voice was insurmountable, despite my attempt to ignore it, hoping I'd just get used to it as the story went on. She sounded irritatingly floaty, to me — like she was constantly on the brink of falling asleep, or was perhaps enveloped in the haze of some distracting smokey substance. This timbre was even more pronounced when she read dialogue, of any character. I don't know if that's her normal voice, or her professional book-reading one, but regardless, it made it impossible for me to hear the story behind it.

Begins with a phone call from her deceased brother, broken with static, that he "had to pay the piper." Then evolves in a story, in the authors words, of spirits - "the good things and the bad" that, if you "turned your head just right," you might "get a glimpse of."

I really struggled to finish this- many times I thought about putting it down and walk away.
Some very scary, creepy scenes but the fluff between these were long, repetitive and somewhat boring.
I'm still open to reading other books by Hightower.

Couldn't stop turning the pages. Although the ending is a little lackluster, the overall suspense that the author builds throughout the story makes this a worthwhile read if you like books about the paranormal.

I did not like the book that much as the two previous ones from Lynn Hightower I read - The debt collector and Even in Darkness. The story is long and not very persuasive in a way that could make you feel scared for a horror one :(

In this horror story written by Lynn Hightower, the character Olivia James is haunted by the recent death of her brother, her failed marriage, and her future as a single mother. The haunting becomes real when Olivia’s brother calls from beyond the grave to let her know that The Piper has been paid. Attributing this strange call to a lack of sleep and grief, Olivia hopes moving back into her childhood home in Tennessee will help her mourn and heal. But her grief turns to horror as a malevolent presence makes itself known to Olivia and her daughter.

Hightower spooks the reader with lights that turn off and on in old houses, whispers in dark corners that frighten children, and a sinister story about a mysterious figure known as The Piper. The pacing of this story doesn’t slow down and keeps the reader turning the pages as the stakes increase.

The bodies keep piling up as The Piper makes deals with vulnerable people and then collects the price. The Piper can fulfill your greatest desires, but it will cost your life. Readers will feel the danger closing in as The Piper keeps claiming victims, and will cheer on Olivia as she researches the origins of this evil entity—and why it seems particularly interested in her and her family.

Hightower’s masterful storytelling will grip you by the collar as you stay up all night reading to see what happens next!

Well this was a truly scary read. Now this type of horror really has to do with the paranormal and really getting in touch with the other side. Olivia is a our main character and she’s really experienced some major loss in her life. Between the disappearance of her sister and the mysterious death of her brother; loss looms over their family. Olivia decides to move her and her daughter back home to the south where Olivia grew up. Now the move is precipitated by the sudden death of her brother. When Olivia starts getting these strange static filled calls from her dead brother….things get deeply chilling. I will stop here because I really don’t like to give spoilers. If you grew up being scared of your own personal brand of the boogie man this is a very scary and perfect read for you. The character development in this novel was also great. The voice of was written in was clear and fun to follow. It left me really spooked, I kept having to put the book down and pick it back up. This is a great read for fall, I highly recommend for any horror, suspense, or thriller junky!

As a reader, I immensely enjoyed the Piper.
As a writer, I despaired at every page because why should I bother to try to put anything out in the world when people could read The Piper instead, and get much more enjoyment from it because it is an amazing novel?

I rushed through this in a day and a half, and had troubles putting it down to do household errands and focus on my own writing. Along with this novel came a lot of ‘mhms’ from my mouth when my partner tried to talk to me about who knows what, but I was too engrossed in the story of Olivia to fully pay attention.

Recommendation for this is high, whether you like horror or not. If you’re any bit into fantasy, yes. The Pied Piper is something that has been around for a very long time, and has always seemed more like a horror story than a child’s fantasy to me, at least. This rendition of him is fantastic.

I do warn you though: There is animal death. That’s always a trigger for me.

I read a lot of horror & while I'd class this as paranormal rather than "horror", it is a true spine tingler & certainly one of the creepiest & most unsettling books I've read in quite sometime - my heart was honestly pounding at one point!

The story revolves around Olivia & her daughter Teddy who, after Olivia receives a phone call from her brother who has been dead for nine weeks (if that doesn't intrigue you surely nothing will?), return to live in Olivia's childhood home. This is a house which doesn't have the happiest of histories & according to Teddy is also home to a menacing ghost. As Teddy becomes more & more fretful & fearful of being in the house, more deaths start to occur & things begin to get really chilling...

All-in-all a cracking read, if you want a book to give you the shivers, this could well be the one to do it.

This Book is Just…..WOW

This book literally grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go! I definitely have to warn you - DO not get attached to any character. I have never read a book where my jaw dropped so much. The Piper is lethal and conniving. Never read a book that just had my feelings all over the place and actually connected with the characters. This author did an amazing job!!!!! You won’t be disappointed reading this book.

Inexpensive audio book on Chirp, but very entertaining. Olivia moves home to Tennessee from California with her eight-year-old daughter, Teddy. She receives a phone call from her dead brother. This sets in motion some eerie events in the home she grew up in. When Teddy disappears, she searches for her in a deserted asylum in Louisville, Kentucky.
