Although the title misled me to believe the time period was during Herod the Great's reign, this is a great book about politics during post-Herodian times and the rise of Christianity directly after the crucifixion of Jesus.

I found this biblical history novel in a box of old books. It follows a young scribe named Prochorus living in the Holy Land in the time immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He is the son of Herod’s steward , Chuza, who was a tribune in the Roman army and Joanna, a Jew who becomes a follower of Jesus. Prochorus has been a friend of John and James ben Zebedee, the fishermen who become disciples for many years. He is hired to scribe for Herod Antipas, son of King Herod, soon meets and is immediately drawn to Princess Mariamne, the granddaughter of King Herod. Prochorus is very astute and a master of diplomacy. He finds himself earning a reputation as being a brilliant political asset and becomes the Deputy Governor of Jerusalem for a time.

This is an old text so they are not included, but having a map of the area and a family tree showing the descendents of King Herod the Great is helpful.

I would never have picked this off the shelves of the library, but it was readily available so I decided to try it. I almost did not finish, but persevered. I would characterize it as rather lengthy and very dry.
