The parables of the Celtic saints were among the most popular tales told by the Celts. Filled with divine meaning, these parables include stories of moral and physical courage, great compassion, and spiritual wisdom--ancient texts from fifteen centuries ago that have been handed down from generation to generation. In this beautiful collection, Robert Van de Weyer has gathered together Celtic stories with spiritual meaning which speak to our own time. Abingdon Press.
As a short read this book enables a superficial religious study of stories of Celtic saints. I’m no expert on this sort of thing, and my morals are pretty dubious, but a few stories seem to involve deceiving people for their own good(?). What are we leaning here? Some are just plain strange, which surely show the humour of the Celtic people. For example: picture a fly whose sole purpose was to keep your place on the page of a book. Really, I was hoping to see meaning beyond that or their history? …Lovely pictures!
I read this book 3 days after my beloved dog, Jade, died. She was a Westie, my little Scottish snowflake that dropped in Lisbon, and that by a miracle appeared in my life. Reading this book brought me comfort, the view of Celtic spirituality that everything in nature is interconnected makes the world more beautiful, and even death becomes a little more friendly. Great collection of Celtic gems.
I walked into this thinking the word parable was used in its broader sense, but here it's used in the more confined sense of being stories about Christianity. It's a fast, simple read. Not really anything in which I'm interested. But it's fine.
A beautiful book filled with easy to read short stories of the Celtic saints! Each story is only a page or two long so it’s a great book to have if you only have a few minutes to read or if you have a short attention span. There are so many beautiful wholesome stories and lovely illustrations!
