A great movie companion full with details about the movie. It really gives you a picture of how the book was transferred into the big screen. Moreover it is full with infomation about how a movie is being filmed. If you are fan of the books and the movie definitely read this. If you are not interested in this book series but you want to know more about how a book is being made into a movie or how the movie industry works this is an interesting option to consider.
As for the movie which I watched a few hours after I finished this companion, I loved it. It was different from the book in many levels, there were differences in the story and the mythology (some changes were really potent actually) but the basic plot, the story that I loved, was there. Beautiful Creatures is a book series that I love because of the world and the atmosphere the authors have created. The movie really captures that. Even readers that did not enjoy the book might enjoy the movie. As a fan of both I can really recommend exploring this world.
This book was good but not great. I had assumed it would be an aggressive romance, but in reality it was much softer, more tender, and that was definitely the standout for me.
Having read the actual novel and seen the film, I had a passing interest in this "guide". It wasn't quite what I expected as I thought there was going to be more of a comparison of characters from book to screen. This was more technical and behind the scenes. Overall, a quick easy read to boast my 2016 reading challenge. Recommended more so for fans of the movie than the followers of the novel.
Beautiful Creatures: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion is basically what it says on the tin. This is the illustrated book, talking about how the movie (based on the novel by Kami Gracia and Margaret Stohl) was made. From design, make-up, editing and special effects. With quotes from both the authors, the director, the actors, and other people behind the screens.
And it was interesting. I am a geek to this side of movies so to read about how the authors felt when they walked onto site the first day and hearing from make-up and SFX team made the famous "Dining Room" and Casters Ball was interesting and fascinating.
Although, it was missing things. It missed how the actor who played Ethan, Alden Ehrenreich, got the role (the original actor couldn't get a visa for filming, if I remember) or how Alice Englert (Lena) actually refused the role a few times before accepting it. Or how the screenwriter decided what was going to be in the movie and what wouldn't. It's the little things, I know, but it would have been interesting to hear how/why this happened.
This is a fan book. If you are a fan of the Beautiful Creatures series or the movie, you are going to love this as this explains how the movie was created, this is gonna be perfect for you. If not, you might read this and find it a bit lacking.
This stunning movie companion has me super duper excited for the movie, which really can't come fast enough for me! It is filled with tons of beautiful images and lots of really interesting information. What I enjoyed the most was hearing how the special effects were created - they truly sound magical! The director Richard LaGravenese seems to have a great vision of what is true to the novel, I like how he was so open to other peoples ideas and opinions. I really don't think fans of the books need to be worried or nervous about any changes that have been made.
We get to hear from a wide range of the team, from the makeup artists to the actors themselves - which was awesome. The thing I am now most excited to see in the film is The Caster Ball, which features big elaborate hair, makeup and costumes that look fantastic - you really wouldn't believe how much hard work has went into the preparation.
There is a little bit of everything in this wonderful book and it really is amazing to see how the magic was brought to life behind the scenes. I thing this is an absolute must read for any Beautiful Creatures fan, I know it is something that I will treasure and definitely refer back to.
Bring on the movie!! And please do go and read these fabulous books first people!!
This movie companion is the perfect thing to whet your appetite for the movie being released in less than two weeks, if like me, you love the books and cannot wait to see the film, then this is what you need to tide you through. Its full of gorgeous pictures of the cast, crew and sets, has great insights into some of the stunts performed, if you're into that kind of thing and even a lovely little history on how the idea for the book came about. It goes on a great journey from when the authors put pen to paper, how it got picked up to become a movie and all the effort that was put into making it into what promises to be an epic movie. Seriously I can't wait to see it, as soon as I finished the book I wanted to run to the cinema, but of course it hasn't been released yet, so I'll continue sitting on the edge of my seat and petting the pretty pictures until I get to see the film!
Loved the movie, really liked the original book. As such, I enjoyed reading about how the latter became the former. This companion is full of beautiful pictures and illustrations and lots of interesting information. Quite a lot of the creative team and the actors also chime in opinions and stories, so that's a lot of fun (acting insights from Viola Davis? Be still my heart...). All that said, it can get a bit dense (i.e. explaining the dining room scene) and a few parts drag on. It's also not organized in a way that made sense to me; rather than "costumes", "sets", "special effects", "character work", etc., it was split into story and location parts that included information on many different aspects.
OMG!!! Loved seeing all the hard work that went into making this movie & all the special effects with the costumes, make-up & the family dinner scene! I loved the pictures :) and all the different perspectives & the ideas that went into creating the movie!! Hopefully, there will be a sequel - i adored the books & the movie as well!! it was amazing!!!
This just reminds me of how much I was disappointed in the film. I haven't even read the sequels because the movie was so awful. Gah
It's got nice photos and stuff. And it is interesting to learn about production. But it's not great. I found I skimmed parts because I just didn't want to be bothered with reading them.
Très intéressant à lire, il nous permet de mesurer l'implication de l'équipe, les travaux réalisés, et surtout de comprendre certains choix - même si ces derniers me paraissent toujours aussi étranges...
I really enjoy looking through these movie guides. I have not gotten around to reading the series yet, I had heard very good things. I went to see the movie and I loved it. This was a nice companion to the movie and I imagine it is a nice companion to the series as well.
I loved the pictures, although I wish it had more behind the scenes pictures than just movie stills. The writing was informative; I liked learning about why the authors wrote it and how the director put the movie together. More information on the actors would have been interesting.
hermosas imágenes de la película, detallan el proceso de como se lograron ciertas complicadas escenas, tan bueno como los otros libros de Mark, extrañé un poco más de entrevistas a los actores
It somehow remind me of "twilight", the dark vibe, mysterious charcters, etc.. its an absolute page-turner, "can't wait to check out its movie adaptation.
