Eve Duncan #3

The Search

Rate this book
Building on her series featuring forensic sculptor Eve Duncan, bestselling suspense writer Iris Johansen takes a slightly different tangent with her latest thriller, The Search. The search and rescue team of Sarah Patrick and her golden retriever, Monty, first appeared in The Killing Game, where they helped Eve track down a kidnapped child and a maniacal killer. Now, John Logan, the billionaire who wooed Eve only to lose her to Joe Quinn, needs to utilize Sarah and Monty's talents in a quest of his own. Although it has it rewards, the rescue work Sarah and Monty do demands a hefty emotional toll from them both. Sarah is highly protective of Monty, and when Logan first approaches her with what's obviously a very dangerous mission, Sarah is quick to say no. But Logan brings his powerful resources to bear and more or less forces Sarah to agree to the mission or face the loss of her job, her peace of mind, and Monty. The task at hand involves finding and rescuing a highly valued scientist who has been kidnapped and is being held somewhere in Colombia. But the man who took the scientist is a ruthless and heartless killer whose primary objective is carrying out his sadistic revenge on Logan. Sarah, none too happy about being coerced into helping Logan, becomes even less inclined toward him when Monty is wounded in the rescue attempt. Logan is wounded too, and after their mission has been accomplished, the threesome end up back at Sarah's isolated cabin. Sarah does everything she can to make Logan leave but finds it hard to be too insistent given his wounds. Besides, when Logan pays his debt to her for completing the mission, it is something Sarah could never have anticipated, an act that leaves her stunned, confused, and indebted. As for Logan, he refuses to leave Sarah alone because he knows that his nemesis, Rudzak, saw her and Monty in Colombia. And because of the nature of his relationship with Rudzak and the secret history they share, Logan knows the psycho will eventually come after Sarah. Holed up together and fighting a wide array of emotions, Sarah and Logan discover a spark of passion between them. Though they both try to resist, eventually the spark ignites a full-fledged conflagration that leaves both of them stunned, puzzled, and forever changed. By the time the inevitable confrontation with Rudzak occurs, Logan will be forced to risk both his life and his heart in hopes of keeping Sarah and Monty safe. And Sarah must risk everything she holds dear if she ever hopes to find a happiness she is only now beginning to realize. Fans of Johansen's previous books in this series, The Face of Deception and The Killing Game, will enjoy brief though hair-raising appearances by Eve, Joe Quinn, and Jane -- the spunky, street-wise child Eve adopted in the last book. Also filling out the character roster is an intriguing love interest for an injured gray wolf named Maggie. But the best parts of Johansen's latest effort are her characteristically explosive mix of chilling terror and heated passion and her gift for weaving a tale of intrigue where seeing isn't necessarily believing. —Beth Amos

Best part-Loved the dog rescue and how attentive the owner handler was.
Worst part-The dog handlers choices didn't always follow her talk.
Over all I enjoyed this suspense read. I am a sucker for a book with a dog, got me right there. Then they toped it with a really nasty villain, and sexy alpha man and an equally alpha woman. I was left guessing till the end, which is always nice.
I will go back and read the first 2 books in this series before moving on more.

Iris Johansen has managed to write a story that instead of focusing on Eve Duncan (who is the main character in this series) is putting Sarah Patrick and John Logan in focus and I loved it! I adored John Logan in the first book in the Eve Duncan series and I was quite sad that Johnsen decided that Joe Quinn was a better match for Eve. However, now I'm not sad anymore because in this book Logan and Sarah have to work to find a kidnapped man and stop a madman that has a grudge against Logan. And, they work very well together and like with Eve, Logan and Sarah's "relationship" doesn't start off that good. Can have something to do with the fact that Logan forced Sarah to help Eve in the past book...

This series is one of my favorite and, despite that Eve and Quinn have a minor role in this book is the book pretty awesome. But, as I stated above, I adore Logan so getting a book with him in the center again was a bonus. The story is intense and captivating and I loved every minute of it. Logan and Sarah have a lot of chemistry and I enjoyed their banter. And, I loved Monty, Sarah's golden retriever. It almost feels like they have telepathic communication with each other. Almost? I actually do believe so, to be honest. Another character that I came to like very much is Logan's pal Sean Galen. A fun-loving mercenary that loves to cook.

It's a wonderful book, hell it's a wonderful series! Read it!

Thrilling brain candy at its finest!

John Logan, ultra-rich businessman, entrepreneur and power broker, has a serious problem. Devastated by the recent death of his Korean wife, Chen Li, from leukemia, he pulls out all the stops on the development of an artificial blood substitute at his state of the art research facility in South America. When the lab is destroyed by a saboteur's bomb and one of his key employees is kidnapped, Logan is determined to find the culprits at all costs, rescue the kidnap victim and finish the project at a second laboratory in the U.S. Unscrupulously pulling on any string he can, he all but blackmails Sarah Patrick and her extraordinary dog, Monty, members of an elite K-9 ATF search and rescue unit, into helping him in a near impossible jungle rescue. When the nasty of the piece catches sight of Sarah and Monty at work, he promptly adds them to his hit list and Logan realizes his duty to protect Sarah and Monty will stretch the limits of every resource on which he can draw!

THE SEARCH is brain candy at its finest and makes no pretense at aspiring to become literature! Johansen has given us a fine story - a strong female character; a strong male character; conflict between the two that allows each of their characters full rein; a romance that develops realistically without falling into the trap of being overwrought or silly; a psychopathic villain whose nastiness knows no bounds; love of animals (my wife would say that any story with "paws" is OK with her!); and, finally, a realistic glimpse into the selfless dedication of those men, women and animals that are part of disaster search and rescue teams.

Two thumbs up for a thoroughly enjoyable thriller! I'll be looking for Johansen's next story to see where she takes the tale of Logan and Patrick's romance.

Gah, another one I didn't realize was a romance. Maybe I just need to stick to authors I know. It seems like all these romances stick to a formula. Take a man and woman who hate each other. Put them in a tense, stressful situation where they are forced to share physical space. They have wild sex. And more sex. One of them has commitment issues/is in denial about his or her feelings. Cue another tense/stressful situation where they are forced apart. The denial falls away and they realize they are madly in love. They are reunited, express that love, and live happily ever after. Blah. That being said, this one didn't bother me as much as some others. It was an interesting story, especially the dog and the search and rescue operations. There also weren't any graphic sex scenes. I might pick up this author again at a used book sale, which is where I got this one.

I never warmed to Logan and his strong arming a situation so that Sarah was used to find Bassett seemed contrived. Well, the whole Rudzak "I will get revenge and kill Logan" scheme was so convoluted and seemed so implausible that the story just didn't work for me. Eve's inclusion seemed like unnecessary filler. The only redeeming part of the story was Monty, the rescue dog and his falling for Maggie, the hurt wolf.

I enjoyed this book however, I am not sure why it is in with the Eve Duncan series. There were maybe a dozen pages dedicated to Eve. This story focused on Sarah Patrick and Monty who we were introduced to in the previous book, The Killing Game, and her relationship with John Logan.

This story gave insight to Sarah and what the hold that Madden had over her and about the relationship between her and John Logan. I think the story focused more on their relationship than it did on the threat from Rudzik. Though, Rudzik did play a part in Login's past, it gave the reader an insite as to what he was like before and to the reason that Rudzik whated to harm Logan.

The story takes you to Columbia in the beginning to rescue a hostage which you quickly find out is about Logan. It then returns to ranch of Sarah in Arizona where a big chuck of the story is played out. You see Logan following Sarah to Taiwin for a search/rescue of a mudslide which was created for Logan, and then they all go back to Arizona. They finally end up in North Dakota where one of Logan's plants are located, and the story finally ends there. The story does throw in a love intrest for Monty, yes Monty the dog--but not sure how believable that can be as he falls for a wolf? Seriously?

My biggest question next to why this is in the Eve Duncan series is about Bonnie. It states in the beginning of the story that she (her bones), were found, verified via DNA, and buried on the hill by the cabin that Eve and Joe have. I have read some further books in the Eve Duncan series (can not remember which ones--maybe you can help me name them), in which Eve is still looking for Bonnie. I know I have missed some books in the series and I am now reading them in order as maybe one of the ones I have missed will explain it to me about Eve still looking for Bonnie. Maybe a goodreads person here can help me on this one.

The Search by Iris Johansen is the 3rd book in the Eve Duncan Mystery series. When a medical research facility is destroyed and his chief scientist kidnapped, billionaire John Logan utilizes the skills of Sarah and her search and rescue dog Monty to bring down his enemy before more lives are lost. Even though this book is part of the Eve Duncan series, Eve only plays a minor role in this book. I loved Sarah and Monty and the developing relationship with John Logan as he strives to keep everyone safe. I enjoyed learning more about Sarah and Monty's search and rescue work. A fast paced and action packed thriller with a bit of romance for both Sarah and Monty.

The Search by Iris Johansen is the third book of the Eve Duncan contemporary mystery-thriller series. Action moves rapidly from Arizona to Latin America, the Far East, the East Coast, the upper MidWest.

Sarah Patrick is the search-and-rescue heroine. Her beloved golden retriever Monty is able to "find" in challenging environments where other SAR dogs cannot. Monty 'speaking' to Sarah at first seems over-the-top corny, but it grows tolerable, providing a touch of humor as Monty falls in love with a wolf.

Eve is incidental to the plot. Her former romance (now friendship) with billionaire John Logan provides a conduit to Sarah. Conniving with her ATF (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) boss, Logan coerces Sarah into tracking down Logan's arch enemy Rudzak in Colombia. Far from Sarah's commitment to 'search and rescue', Logan uses her and Monty as the first step to 'search and destroy' Rudzak. The plan fails; Logan and Monty are wounded trying to escape. Logan realizes Sarah is now on Rudzak's hit list, along with Logan's secret laboratories and researchers.

Rudzak and Logan have deep-seated irreconcilable hatred due to the one woman they both loved (and lost). At his crime scenes Rudzak leaves behind souvenirs (her possessions) only Logan can recognize. Rudzak's crimes show absolute disregard for human life; he kills thousands to go after Logan. Both Logan and Rudzak show no compunction at eliminating those who betray them.

Sarah is an effective addition to Logan's team of mercenaries. Once he knows the terrible blackmail pressure she's under, he uses his considerable influence to grant her heart's desire (to keep Monty). Inevitably, romance sparks, but can they survive to enjoy it?

I read this one because my dad gave it to me years ago. It's not great, more trashy romance than thriller. Characters constantly describe each other's personalities so you know what to think before you think, a lot of the dialogue is corny, the villain is built up to be an evil mastermind but is really kind of lame. But I enjoyed the descriptions of dog-led search and rescue missions, and Sarah having an almost psychic connection with her dog Monty was a neat idea. This is a sort of sequel/spinoff of Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan series, so some things were probably explained in earlier books, but it isn't a huge deal. It's a disposable time-killer more than anything else.

Libro dedicado a Logan y Sarah. Divertido. Destripadoras

I read this book as a recommendation from a friend who loves this author, and I guarantee that is the only reason I finished it. I was bored for most of the story and didn’t really care about any of the characters except the dog. I truly don’t understand all the high ratings, but every bold deserves someone to love it.

It’s nice reading a series where there’s a departure in the stories and yet a thread remains. I like how the author has tied the previous two books together in this one. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Much as I enjoy these, this leaned more to the “romance” side than the mystery/thriller side. Sorry, not so much what I want. But I’ll give it another try or two to see how things work out before giving up on the series. <><

Iris Johansen is a solid, strong author, and her books can be depended upon for interesting characters, exciting storylines, and lots of suspense and action. This was no different, and I enjoyed it.

The story tosses you right into the thick of the action from the very first page. Although there are ebbs and flows, the excitement is maintained pretty consistently throughout the entire book. Johansen knows how to write a story that keeps you turning pages, and this one did that for me.

I also loved the character of Sarah. Strong female characters always make a book a good read for me, and Sarah is definitely strong, and determined to maintain her independence no matter what, or who tries to protect her. Not only does that make for a good character, the stubbornness makes for a suspensful and engaging read.

I will voice one minor irritant, which is not a complaint about this book, per se, as I've come across this scenario in several books I've read just recently, but just a curmudgeonly observation. How is it that these "average" women seem to constantly be thrown together with these millionares and billionaires? It seems to me that such men [and of course, they're ALWAYS men!] would have so many "people" handling their affairs, that the potential for ordinary mortals to end up face-to-face with them would be relatively small. Even smaller is the likelihood of these millionaires falling head-over-heels for such normal folks. But, as I said, that's not a complaint about this book, just something I've been noticing.

Overall, I found this a good light read. Well-written, interesting plot, and characters I can connect to and root for.

Not sure why this has such high reviews, the writing is comically bad and all over the place. An easy read, but not really a good one. Too many clichés and a lot of writing in circles that made it a little muddy and confusing where the story was going. Like the way they just transported to an entirely new place. Too many people and too many moving parts. And the whole, "I love you because we've been through so much trauma together" trope was so overplayed.

Also, pretty sure cadaver dogs are a specific kind of search and rescue, that are trained differently with that concentration, so Monty having the ability to do it all is a little far fetched. Oh he found a body, are they dead or alive? Monty can find them either way! Nope, doesn't work like that. Decomposition is a different scent entirely than tracking. They bring out differently trained dogs at different times in those situations.

Also, as someone who volunteered at a wolf sanctuary with pures and wolf dogs, don't even get me started on the irresponsibility of letting a domestic dog breed with a pure wolf.. I was hoping it didn't end that way, but here we are. Someone with a veterinary background such as Sarah's would know that the health complications and behavioral issues in wolf dogs are a big enough deterrent.

I get that it was sort of a spin off of a series with Eve (that I never read, so it was fine as a stand alone), but did they have to weave get into it so much? Adding another few characters for content sake was annoying.

Meet search-and-rescue worker Sarah Patrick and Monty, her talented golden retriever, and billionaire John Logan.

Sarah Patrick is being forced to take part in a deadly mission John Logan, who knows enough about her past to ensure her cooperation. John Logan doesn't take no for an answer. As part of an elite K-9 search and rescue team, Sarah and her golden retriever Monty, have a gift for finding what no one else can - whether it's a survivor buried alive by an earthquake or the skeleton of a murdered child. Once Sarah starts the perilous assignment, she realises Logan's promise that she will be safe may not be enough to protect her. Because a killer is devising a sadistic vengeance ... and he may soon find a chilling use for Sarah..

When Logan's top-secret research station in South America is attacked and his chief scientist kidnapped, Sarah and Monty manage to track the hostage through the jungle and save his life. But that's only the beginning in what turns out to be a series of sadistic and deadly attempts to destroy Logan. Despite Sarah's initial distrust, she comes to respect and ultimately love Logan--which makes her and Monty targets for the killer's vengeance, too. The action moves swiftly across the globe, from the American Southwest to Colombia to Taiwan, and finally to North Dakota, in a tense, dramatic denouement.

Inexplicably decided to read this in eighth grade. An OK but stiff, predictable, and often poorly written novel of a kidnapping, a terrorist attack, and a whiny woman’s search for her murdered daughter (aided by her ever-present and apparently mind-reading wonder dog). The action is fine, and fortunately there is little in the way of romance, but the plot leaves some loose ends and often feels stretched. The romance that does make it into the plot comes out of nowhere.

The characters can be superficial, the dialogue is either dull, choppy, or boring, and the plot can get preposterous. Too often the author tries to convey suspense simply by using short sentences or paragraphs. There’s way too many betrayals to keep track of and way too many people that are in the know but oddly do nothing about it. The villain was a cardboard cutout, the final confrontation was hasty and anticlimactic, and the main character’s conversations with her dog was a bit much. And a dog/wolf romance? Seriously?

Oh my gosh he's doing it again. This guy sticks to a pattern. Once again, Logan is manipulating and deceiving a woman (and her dog) to get them to do what he wants and putting them into danger. He's a bit nicer about it here, but why does he keep doing this? This time, Sarah and her dog Monty get roped into working for Logan, who realizes the danger he's put them in and decides to stick around to protect them...and of course to put the moves on Sarah now that he doesn't have Eve any more. This wasn't as bad as previous books. Sarah is somewhat likeable and I guess Eve's treatment of Logan has done him some good because he's not as despicable (I still don't like him that much). It's really Monty and the suspense that drive this story. It's entertainment enough, but I don't think I'm continuing this series if I can help it.

Billionaire John Logan is not beyond using every means available to him to get what he wants, even blackmail. When his research site is attacked by an old enemy, he needs the help of Sarah Patrick and her dog Monty who helps uncovers victims living and dead. The only obstacle in his way, she hates him with a passion.

I picked this up not realizing it was the third book in a series, so I felt like I had walked into the middle of the story. I felt lost a bit with some of the history between the characters, I think it should probably be read in order.

The overall story was different, Sarah has a connection with her dog that I never completely understood. I would go back and try the first book and see if I can get more into this series. It took me awhile to get into the book.
