1996 is the centenary of the birth of Howard Hawks, one of the great directors of American cinema. This anthology collects together writings from around the world on the director of such films as "Bringing up Baby", "The Big Sleep", "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", and "Rio Bravo".
Some great essays on Hawks here. Not a contemporary collection but a much more interesting book of what has been written about Hawks through the ages. I must confess that I've never seen a Hawks film all the way through (apart from Rio Bravo, masterpiece), though I guess his work would appeal to me a lot. Included here is Bazin's famous piece "how could you possibly be a Hitchcocko-Hawksian?"
