Major Dos Masters deployed on counter drug operations more than he is on base or home in Colorado, prefers his no relationships, no broken hearts lifestyle. Then a mission went horribly wrong. Dos spent months in captivity and more in the hospital after his rescue. He has finally returned home to Colorado for some R&R. His time is spent getting back in shape, fighting attacks from a virus his captors pumped into him, and watching the redhead across the street from his brother's security office. Not that he plans to do more than watch. Between his vow not to marry, and his now questionable life expectancy, a relationship is the last thing he wants or needs.
Copper Kerrigan, ex-Navy nurse turned massage therapist, likes her quiet life in the Colorado Rockies. Living in the house she inherited from her grandparents is a nice change from the horror of Iraq. Coming home to watch her mother's decline from cancer, confirmed her decision to leave nursing. With massage, she is still able to help people heal without all the red tape of hospitals. Her life is full with work and friends. Growing up an Army brat and watching her mother's heartbreak every time her father deployed, she knows love is not for her, especially not with a military man. At least, she did until someone breaks into her place of business and a wounded soldier comes to her rescue. When Dos receives a call from his commanding officer, who turns out to be the redhead's father, his mission becomes making certain Copper remains safe. His plan is to do it from a distance, but when later that night someone tries to break into her house, Dos finds himself with a very pretty, very tempting houseguest.
Copper wishes she could argue the command that she spend the night at his house, but since he was injured trying to protect her it seems a bit childish. Besides, her father asked her to help with his rehab. A stay at his house for the night will give her a clearer view into the severity of his condition. What she sees instead are shadows of guilt in his eyes. She fears she won't be able to resist the pull of his wounded heart.
Is it possible to have both your brains blown out AND your socks blown off at the same time? YOU BETCHA' SWEET MASTERS MEN IT IS!!!!
I LOVE buying books on a whim (not good on the credit card i tell 'ya :)) AND being blown away by the story! And with Her Master Defender i was!!!
Major Dos Masters was held captive by a drug lord, who proceeded to kill Dos's teammates, torture him and pump him with an unknown virus. He comes back to Colarado to recuperate and meets Copper Kerrigan who also happens to be his Commanding Officer's daughter. He doesn't want to feel anything for her; how can he, when he feels that he is a lost cause? He's carrying horrific injuries and suffering nasty side-effects from the unknown virus which he feels is going to kill him eventually. But Fate has other plans for him. Both Dos and Copper are thrown together by a seemingly innocent break-in at Copper's business which turns out to be not so innocent and while Dos doesn't want to, he takes it upon himself to protect Copper.
Dos tries to resist Copper at every turn (can you say SMOKIN' SEXUAL TENSION??!!) but succumbs to his feelings for her in the end. What ensures is a race to protect Copper and save himself and their relationship.
WOW!!! Firstly, this is the first book in the Masters Men series; Dos has 2 other brothers; Ace and Tres (yes, they ARE named Ace, Dos and Tres!!) AND GET THIS, they're TRIPLETS!!!! TRIPLE HOTNESS FACTOR!!! This book has it all; nail-bitting suspense and did i say sexual tension that you can cut with a knife?!! BRAVO Ms. Kerns! You have officially turned me into a stalker for these Masters men and the fact this is your DEBUT, has me chomping at the bit for the next Masters Men story about Tres!!! I can't wait!!
So, for anyone that reads this, RUN, i say RUN to Amazon to go buy this book NOW!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!!
This is book one in the 'Masters Men' series. It's a good read and I enjoyed it. The first three books are about the Masters brothers, triplets actually, named Ace ~ Dos ~ Tres and I thought that was a catchy and unique way to name these three men. Definitely not ordinary.
Dos is featured in this book. He's career Army and his last mission went sideways. His team was captured by a drug lord and his thugs and he was the only one who survived (sorta.) He was tortured terribly daily. Beaten, burned, broken bones throughout his body and if that wasn't enough they began injecting him with drugs. He became the guinea pig for the drug lord and they were trying out a new form of warfare by injecting viruses into him that were meant to kill.
He had never met his CO's daughter but she lived in the same town as Dos did. The CO asked for his daughter to help Dos out with the illness and the terrible pain he lived with. He also spoke to Dos and asked Dos to keep an eye on her to keep her safe. Someone had broken into her business. A little matchmaking by the dad. Cute!
I really did like the storyline...so why only 3.75? It didn't have a lot to do with the plot exactly but it was the self talk that went on in Dos' head frequently reminding himself he made a vow to never fall in love and marry when he was twelve years old, along with his two other brothers. He couldn't fall for the CO's daughter because he was going to die...on and on. It was way too redundant for me and made the story feel as though it was plodding along slowly. I think you could have gotten the same desired affect if you knocked off fifty of the two-hundred-forty-eight pages. The chronic redundancy was unnecessary and added nothing to move the story along. In fact, I felt like it slowed the story down and sometimes caused it to stall out. Examples: The vow I mentioned that the boys took was written about nine times in the story and Dos could do nothing without rehashing it our in his mind...over and over.
I am anxious to move on to book two and I do recommend this book as well as the series.
A masterfully entertaining story set in the backdrop of Colorado. At the heart of it is the budding romance between Major Dos Masters and Copper Kerrigan, who are attracted to one another despite their shortcomings and/or debilitations that have arisen from their lives and occupations in and around the U.S. military. The extra bonus is that the plot builds around suspense to do with a military operation gone wrong against a drug cartel. I was impressed by the author’s ability to create her entire story around very few scenes, which allowed the reader to focus on the more important pieces to the story—the emotional rollercoaster of the evolving romance. The beginning of “Her Master Defender” grabbed me, and I didn’t put this book down until I finished it. I felt at ease with the well-developed characters, and I can’t wait to read the next stories in the series that will feature Dos's two triplet brothers. I highly recommend this story to avid readers of romance who love a little suspense mixed in.
This book was free so for a freebie it was ok but it hasn't inspired me to read more from this author. I thought the silly character names were a mistake as they just reminded me that they were not real people. I liked Dos's damaged character and the plot was initially fairly intriguing but was not developed properly and I was left feeling disappointed e.g. (don't read on if you don't want slight spoiler) The author raised questions about why someone would develop the virus Dos was given that were never answered, the location of events never changed and the criminals were unrealistically stupid. I think this author needs a good editor to develop her writing properly as it showed a lot of promise that was never fulfilled.
Sandra S. Kerns really knows how to write the alpha male, and the heroine who can handle him! Kerns debut novel, Her Master Defender, is filled with spot on depictions of military life and its pros and cons for a family. Dos Masters and his two other brothers Ace and Tres, fill the story with testosterone, and Copper Kerrigan adds the right female touch for Dos to realize his life isn't complete, yet he dare not risk any relationship after his run in with the simply evil Cardone. Twists and turns will keep you reading far into the night. I can't wait for the other two books in the series to come out.
A very good wounded hero story that had lots of excitement, plus some sweet moments. The vow the brothers took at age 12 and adhered to (mostly) was an idea that could have been silly but worked very well because of how seriously they took it, especially Dos, since we see this book from his POV. It turns out to be very poignant and caring, in a kind of twisted way. Also poignant is poor Dos's suffering - it's hard to read some of it, but it makes the final confrontation with the villain all the more suspenseful. Copper makes a good foil to Dos, and I like that they both area dealing with similar issues in simialr (and not completely effective) ways.
I'd go 4.5 stars on this one. I liked the storyline and the characters. I would definitely continue with the series. My main issues though were the lack of commas in some places which caused some confusing sentences. I had to keep going back to reread to make sense of them. Also, at points I felt like I was reading book 2 and I had missed some information. It kind of all smoothed out but there were times I felt lost. And the ending seemed like it would carry over to book 2 since there didn't seem to be a definite finality to it. So I am not sure what that is about. But overall I liked the book. It was a quick read and I found myself looking forward to reading it.
First of the Masters Men series. These guys are tall, strong, good-looking and a little quirky. When you see their names, you'll probably laugh. It's almost too cutesy for words.
Once again, the action is in Colorado, where apparently all the macho men in America have gone. Dos Masters is a career soldier who has been working in black ops until he is badly - very badly-damaged by a vengeful drug lord. By the way, there's sort of a McGuffin here, left for a future story maybe?
Dos meets and falls for a woman who is as far away from his thoughts as can possibly be. BTW, she's the daughter of his CO. Funny, right? But there's enough serious happening here. Good one.
Her Master Defender doesn't waste any time pulling the reader right into the story. Author, Sandra S. Kerns is a pro at setting a fast pace and keeping the tension high. Often, with romantic suspense, the book is either too slow or too fast. Kerns knows just when to step back and let the reader catch a breath. Not that you'll want to, Dos and Copper are two entertaining and enjoyable characters. Grab a nice glass of something cold and settle in with this one, Her Master Defender will keep you reading until the last page.
Even though I haven't read anything by Ms. Kearns prior to this book, I decided to take a chance on this one. Previous reviews mentioned grammar and spelling issues but those are easily skimmed over. The story is what makes the book and what a story it is. I loved how the character come to life so you can immerse yourself into the story. All I have to say, is the book is fantastic and I'm looking forward to the other two brothers stories.
Great debut book by talented author. The story started with a bang, hooking me right away and the fast-paced suspense kept me turning pages and reading late into the night. Family, love and suspense--entertainment at it's best. What more could we want? A sequel? Luckily our hero is a triplet. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
Really enjoyed this, nice set up so you get to learn a little but about the Master brothers, so their books will be that much more enjoyable, thought Dos and Copper were a lovely couple together, good, easy read, enjoy!.
I did not like their names. I know it was supposed to be cute but it just seemed stupid. I didn't like a single character. Actually I did. I loved the dog. I felt like a Navy Nurse should have been able to handle herself better and I thought Dos was just too aggressive and inconsiderate.
