Carolyn Fulgenzi was born on 28 July 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, daughter of Janet (McLaughlin) and Andrew Fulgenzi. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and completed her undergraduate education at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She continued her studies attending Syracuse University receiving her Master’s in English Education. After retiring as a teacher with the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, she joined the faculty at Syracuse University as an adjunct professor in the writing department. Concurrently, she was also teaching at Onondaga Community College.

Carolyn blamed her tenth grade English teacher for nudging her into the writer's life. Sister Rose Terrence insisted that she enter a short story contest sponsored by the Detroit News, and Cara won! Of course, she was thrilled with the award -- a dictionary that still sits on her desk -- but at that time, her goal in life was to become an actress, and eventually, she attained that goal. She married Mr Hanlon, and had three sons: Kevin D., Brian A, and Brendan J. Hanlon. Only after her three sons were born that she turned her full attention to writing again. She sold her first Temptation to Harlequin in 1994, and that book, C.J.'s Defense as Carolyn Andrews, also sits on her desk -- right next to the dictionary. Since 2000, she wrote under the pseudonym of Cara Summers. She believed that her background in theater had influenced her writing, allowing her to create new characters and bring them to life for the reader. She passed away on 10 September 2013.

Silly, silly, and SILLY!
Pepper (??) is a private investigator, working for her father's firm. She is in charge of guarding a priceless Monet painting and is determined to use this job to show off her skills and prove herself! Enter her 60 year-old "burglar" aunt, Irene, who wants to steal the painting in order to give it to her criminal boyfriend, Butch, to prove to him that she is a bad girl. All of this becuause Butch dumped her after she waited for him to come out of prison for 40 - FOURTY - years, by saying "he is a bad guy and she is too good for him". Irene explains to Pepper that she will only "borrow" the painting, give it to Butch to prove her point ("she can be a bad girl!"), and then return it the next day! (?!?!?!?!?!)

Feeling sorry for aunt Irene's sad story, Pepper ALLOWS Irene to steal the Monet... only to freak out 10 minutes later and start chasing after it! The rest of the book entails Pepper trying to get the Monet back, a bunch of thieves double crossing each other and trying to get their hands on the painting, aunt Irene being ridiculous with her Butch story, and Pepper being distracted by her handsome co-worker Cole... The most annoying part (besides the stupid plot) was Pepper constantly pretending to be someone else in her mind in order to do the simplest tasks! Imagining she's Veronica Mars in order to be able to solve crimess, imagining she's the plantation slave having sex with the plantation owner just to be able to seduce Cole, etc... Her every other thought was "what would I do if I were ____ ____?" and then she would pretend to be that person! This seemed crazy and childish beyond belief!!

Cole was a good character , hence the 0.5* extra, otherwise this would have been a 1* read!

Overall - fail!

I enjoyed this quick read. Cole and Pepper are both interesting characters, and we get to know them pretty well, considering the chronological and page constraints. Pepper has enough skill and know-how to back up most of her bravado. She's a little too bent on proving herself, but I can let that slide given her family background. You can't expect anything too deep in a book of this length, but the couples are pretty engaging, the adventure has some fun turns, and I really liked the side character Happy. I wonder if he appears in any other books by Cara Summers.

It was a little more racy than I was expecting. Did enjoy the plot of the story. I like the little mystery that they had going with it.
