When English actress Vanessa Forsythe falls in love with Ben Selby, her life changes forever. Leaving behind her beautiful Belgravia apartment, she becomes mistress of Amaroo Downs, a remote cattle station in the Northern Territory. She has a lot of adjustments to make, but her real challenge is yet to come...
Lynne Wilding was an Australian author of romance fiction, and a founding member and first president of the Romance Writers of Australia.
Having come to writing after working in numerous other jobs, she published twelve novels over the course of her life, the most famous being Heart of the Outback
I really enjoyed listening to this story. I liked all the characters as they played their roles in the story.
Bren, an Aussie station owner meets Vanessa, and English actress and they fall in love. Vanessa comes to Australia after their marriage and takes to life in the outback better than anyone thought she would, especially her brother in law Curtis, who is still reeling from his own marriage break up. Then there is Nova, daughter of the station manager who is in love with Curtis and jealous of the successful life that Vanessa has. Vanessa divides her time between the station and acting (On stage, TV and the big screen.
All does not flow smoothly though. Vanessa and Bren have a child who is gravely ill until he has a transplant. There is a dark family secret and when it comes out it causes a bit of havoc.
I found the way the author described the people falling in love with each other and especially the final scene way too cheesy. Also Vanessa is too perfect in my opinion because she doesn't have any flaws at all which makes her seem really unrealistic to me. What I did like was the unexpected twist (that Stuart is the father of Bren) and the description of Australia. The scene with the sandstorm and the one of Novas death were also very exciting! So overall it was a pretty good and enjoyable read :)
Another enjoyable book by Lynne Wilding. This book had a few twists in it, showing that not all relationships that start so romantically and full of hope have happy ever after. I enjoy reading her books detailing life in the outback with the hardships of relying on the weather to make a living and to be happy.
