Textbook style presentation of the subject. The scope of the book is much broader than the title, it really is all a matter of the presentation and reader expectation. If one is expecting some kind of shallow romp through the ages of menageries and circuses of the past, they may well put it down after the first few chapters. For those interested in solid research, documentation and study, then this book will be rewarding. Where "The Rise of the American Circus" by Kotar is a book presented similarly, "Women.." has a more categorical approach with more photographs and interesting subjects. True, this book has a limited audience, but it is a necessary history of an important history of the American Circus. Pensive, reflective, a rewarding read.
