B.A., University of Michigan; Th.M., Dallas Theological Seminary; Ph.D., Northwestern University

A native of Michigan, Richards entered the world on September 25, 1931, to faith-affirming parents. His father served as an elder in their Presbyterian church, and Richards grew up immersed in religious education classes. However, he lost his interest in religion, later decided to enroll at Antioch College, and lacking any guiding factor in his life, he enlisted in the Navy.

Stationed in New York City, Richards encountered Donald Grey Barnhouse who led him to rededicate his life to the Lord. This forever changed Richards who finished his Navy time and went back to school to receive his bacherlor's degree in philosophy. After getting married, Richards attended Dallas Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1962. Moving to Illinois he worked as an editor for Scripture Press Publications and as an associate pastor. His role of overseeing the church education program and teaching a Bible class concerned him. Richards believed that Christian education, practice, and theory needed to be changed and reevaluated.

While teaching as an Assistant Professor of Christian Education at Wheaton College Graduate School, Richards also applied himself to Ph.D. studies. His dissertation research provided him with the framework for his Sunday School PLUS curriculum, and a summer seminar with Wheaton faculty resulted in a book called A New Face for the Church. The impact of this book led Richards to become a full-time author and speaker at conventions and seminars. A prolific writer, Richards has penned over 200 works with much of his writing having been translated into 24 languages.

With his emphasis on the theory of Christian education, Richards has created many changes in the church environment, but he also has taken some criticism. As a researcher and writer, Richards hasn't put his theories to the test in the church or the classroom as he once did. Some practitioners have disagreed with his ideas based on their troubles implementing them. However, other people have found that Richards has found a way to teach Bible content productively, and his approach to teaching Sunday school is the one most used by curriculum publishers.

Currently Larry, who is a member of the International Society of Deliverance Ministers, writes on biblical demonology on the blog www.demondope.com. He conducts FREEDOM WORKSHOPS in churches and communities around the country. These workshops and any personal ministry are offered at no charge to individuals and to sponsoring groups.

The Full Armor of God explored Paul’s letter in the book of Ephesians and he described what all of the different pieces of armor, we are required to put on to stand against the devil’s schemes. A significant aspect that Larry Richards revealed was that in Ephesians chapter six, Paula summarized how the soldiers would put on the whole armor. In the letter of Ephesians in previous chapters, Paul wrote in the reverse order where readers could grasp the deeper meaning. Some people believe that demons are former angels that got casted out from Heaven when God removed satan. All we know for sure is that satan has an army of about one third of the former angels. Larry Richards stated and pointed out that demons don’t possess our bodies, they can only influence our thinking and declare lies that we believe to be true. Demons fight against believers because they don’t want us to realize our true identity in Christ Jesus. They tempt us with ungodly temptations in order to get us to become addicted to sinful practices. They tell us to continue to hold on to unforgiveness so that we never let our wounds heal. The book covered the helmet of salvation, the shield of faith, the sandals of peace, the breastplate of righteousness, and the belt of truth in complete details.

The book began with the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 1:1-23). Larry Richards also reminded readers the connotation of Psalm 139 and how God has made and uniquely knitted David together in his mother’s womb. Like David, God has done the same thing for every single human being and he has purposely chosen the exact egg that our mother produced. He also chose the precise sperm from the millions that are dad produced that would penetrated the egg and form a baby. God created us the meticulous way that He gave us just the right looks, IQ, height, gifts, and talents that He wanted you to have for His purpose and glory. Larry also exposed the truth that satan hates you and his own purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy what God has for you. The enemy wants you to believe that you’re worthless, not good enough, a failure, unwanted, and a mistake. Satan ultimate plan is to get you to believe the lies that he speaks through other people in order to hinder you in realizing your potential and identity in Christ. He also uses other people’s action to prevent us from moving forward in life and living out our proper destinies.

This section on the helmet of salvation was life changing for me to read and let sink deep into my mind and soul. I instantly related to the lies that believers believe about themselves that Larry Richards listed in a neat chart on page 32 and 33. I recognized that I have believed most of them that satan has instilled into my mind to mediated and rehearse upon. Some of the lies I have believed from this list was, “No one will ever love me, I’m ugly, there’s no use trying, God can’t love me, I’m weak, no good, I hate myself, It’s always my fault, I don’t deserve to be happy, I might as well kill myself, nobody cares, it will never get better, and I’m going to die alone.” This helped me to see that I actually believed that I was worthless, not capable of having someone love me, that I wasn’t good enough to be accepted, and that people would always leave me. I remember like most people what people have said to them and I can still hear them to this day. People in my childhood have called me fat – my boobs and back jiggles when I walk, gay because of the way that I talk, I would never have a girlfriend, I would never be able to drive, and many more. I can personally proclaim that I let their comments define my life, and I allowed satan to unknowingly influence me to stop living freely, and to stay in my comfort zone, where in a sense I am protected from their negative decrees spoken over my life. I now am able to distinguish and trace back to where some of the lie roots were originally planted. Some of my early school memories were getting pitched and kicked by two girls on the playground and no teacher protected me and came to my defense. I knew as a boy that I couldn’t fight back so I took it and I never told the teachers. The lie that I believed was that I wasn’t worth protecting and they must be doing it because I’m bad. This part of the book really reinforced the importance of mediating on what God says about us and understanding that all of these were lies implanted by satan into our minds. I loved how Larry went through the scriptures and uncovered the truth that we are adopted into His family and we are blessed with every spiritual blessing and God loved us so much that He sent His only Son to die for your numerous sins.

I would recommend this glorious book to everyone who is still struggling with some of their childhood issues and they are seeking freedom and wanting victory from the enemy schemes. This is a magnificent book written on spiritual warfare and it released the truth behind the hidden meaning about putting on the whole armor of God. This book is the best one that I have read on spiritual warfare and putting on the armor of God, I highly recommend it! This book has took me into a profound study of Ephesians and the authority that we have over the enemy. It taught to understand where the lies declared over my life really came from. It also assisted me in helping me to replace the lies with the helmet of salvation and to mediate on what God has stated about me. I immensely loved the confessions, the renunciations, and the declarations on page 44 and 45. One of my favorite renunciations was, “I renounce the lie that I will always be alone. I am a member of Your family, Father, and have a host of brothers and sisters who will welcome me into community” (Page 44). This book has truly impacted my life and I read it during the time that I truly needed to hear the message presented. I will be rereading this one again! I have been struggling with lies spoken over my life recently again and it finally clicked at who was behind the negative lies. This book has set me free from the lies and it had helped me to put on my new self in Christ! If you’re seeking a powerful book on spiritual warfare, then you definably need to read this one!

The Full Armor of God, written by Larry Richards, is an inspiring book for anyone who takes interest in the belief that there is in fact a spiritual battle between good and evil going on. For those of you who believe there is a God but tend to leave your faith at merely believing for you struggle to conceive the idea of a spiritual battle between God and Satan, then this book is a must read for you. For most of us, believing in demons and angels was almost a natural part of coming to know God. As we continue to grow, the idea of demons living among us becomes almost a fantasy in our minds. We gain comfort in the idea that as long as we love, have faith and build ourselves a firm foundation in God that there is no need to look much further into the spiritual realm of things. We forget though that demons are not so much out to attack God and angels on a spiritual realm, they can not touch, they are here among us and their one goal is to steal from God the thing they can attack, our souls. The Full Armor of God really opens your mind to the reality of demons and the fact that the battle between good and evil is one that involves all of us. It is because of this that we must all be prepared by taking Paul's advice and putting on the Full Armor of God.
Larry Richards goes into great detail in his book to explain step by step each piece of armor and relay Paul's description and advice for each piece. He even goes so far as to relate each piece to the real pieces of armor used by Roman soldiers, allowing you to see and understand God's armor in a whole different light. The first part of Larry's book starts by explaining Satan and his schemes, how he uses demons to try to manipulate our lives. He uses Roman armies to put this into perspective for us, with us as soldiers and the mass of demons with flaming arrows as the enemies attempt to disable us/manipulate us. He uses this to get us into the idea of being in an actual war against Satan. The next part of his book introduces the pieces of armor and how we as humans can use these pieces to defend ourselves from Satan's attacks. Each description takes you back onto the battle field, giving you a physical look at the piece of armor and then a spiritual description of God's piece of armor, allowing you to physical see God's purpose for that piece. Then comes Larry's explanation as to how you can use that armor to defend yourself from personal attacks of demons in your own life. There is so much biblical reference in this book. The depth that Larry goes into to explain Paul's reasoning behind the armor of God is incredible.
At the end of each piece of armor Larry gives you steps you can follow to find the demons attacks in your own life and how to overcome them. As well as walking you through these steps he also makes reference to freedom workshops Larry himself puts on, information for which you can find on his blog. Though a part of me felt at first the consistency of his references were a little like advertising, the fact that his workshops are free, and Larry's purpose for these workshops are necessary for many of us out there, I understood his desire to refer to them so often. Larry even includes a workshop in the back of his book allowing his readers to go ahead and put together their own freedom workshop. It's not just a simple question and answer workshop either, but involves activities, lessons and more great writings by Larry Richards. Even though it wasn't necessary to read through his workshop I found myself wanting to. The last part of Larry's book, before the workshop, goes into explaining our need to live a life of truth/honesty and light, and how living in God's light and truth is a big part of defending ourselves from Satan's attacks, by closing the doors that allow his demons into our life.
I will admit I did not expect this book to focus so much on demons. It was a bit of a shock how much Larry discussed demons and how real demons attacks on our lives can be. Thankfully for me I was already a believer in the spiritual realm and the effects demons can have on our life, though I will admit it is not something I openly express to others. Larry is obviously aware of Christian's tendency to shy away this topic and expresses fully our need to acknowledge their presence more often. Churches, spiritual leaders and councilors alike could make more aware the damage Satan and his demons can do in our lives, and how we as Christians can be better prepared to handle them, as well defend ourselves and our loved ones from their attacks. There is so much more I could go into about this book but I will leave that to you to discover for yourself should you decide to read it. It was an eye opener for me and I look forward to taking Larry, and Paul's, advice and applying it in my own life but taking the full armor of God and applying to my own life.

One of the most important – yet frequently misunderstood – concepts in the church today is spiritual warfare. Many individuals and churches hold a full spectrum of beliefs when it comes to this topic, ranging from complete dismissal to a zealous embrace of the topic. Where can one turn to gain a better understanding of what the Bible teaches about a topic so important, it potentially impacts each of our lives?

The Full Armor Of God – Defending Your Life From Satan’s Schemes by Larry Richards is a good place to start!

In The Full Armor of God, Larry Richards walks readers through the biblical book of Ephesians and uses that book as the basis for teaching Christ-followers how to live freer, more victorious lives.

The Full Armor Of God opens by examining the spiritual landscape of our world during biblical and modern times. One noteworthy distinction that the author makes between the two eras is that, in biblical times, people feared demons, and in modern times, people often embrace them, not recognizing them for what they are!

Larry then goes on to describe the schemes that Satan uses to cause misery and defeat in our daily lives, and the spiritual armor God has provided to His people to protect them from these attacks. A good bit of the book focuses on describing the function and application of each piece of armor.

In the Preface, the author notes that he teaches Freedom workshops around the country at no charge. Appendix B contains materials from his “Live Free Support Group” Lesson Plans. These materials include many wonderful exercises that will help you respond to God’s love in the areas you find most challenging!

I have read a lot of books on this subject over the years and felt the author did a great job of explaining the importance and reality of spiritual warfare. I also thought that Larry brought the cultural and historical significance of the book of Ephesians to life.

Larry's writing and teaching style helps you to understand the book of Ephesians; the exercises he shares help you to apply timeless Biblical truths to your life.

This is definitely a book worth reading.

Are you searching for a way to protect yourself and others from Satan's grip? This powerful book contains so many useful points and thought provoking levels of information. Contains prayers and exercises to confront Satan's lies, views of the spirit world in Paul's time and in our time, from the book of Ephesians a thorough explanation of each part of God's armor and so much more.

From the moment I picked up the book and started diving into the material being presented, I found myself not being able to stop reading, studying, praying and reflecting. A true treasure trove of a book that addresses anything and everything pertaining to combating evil using the Armor of God, a set of tools all believers are given using scripture to back that up. A must have book for the permanent library and one that can be helpful to all and especially for those with questions concerning the identification and expelling of demons in our lives. Brings prayer to a whole other level. Invaluable for church leaders and every believer as well. A well written and highly recommended volume that challenged my faith. 5 Stars! I received a complimentary copy from Chosen Books and Bethany House Publishers for my review.

would recommend but I rate a 3.5/5 because some of the book is really good, and other parts are questionable. the author has some claims about the spiritual world that need way more scripture backing them up especially if they’re not believable. other sections of the book are really helpful AND have scripture defending them. I wish the book was more consistent.

This was the most poignant and real book I've ever read about the spiritual battle that is constantly raging around us all. I love how it discusses the trauma and shame each of us experiences and how those are not of God.

This is a good book that takes a closer, in-depth look at the individual pieces of armor God calls us to put on. Each chapter tackles a different piece and gives ways in which you can put into practice what you're reading.

Larry Richards in his new book, “The Full Armor Of God” published by Chosen Books helps us Defending Your Life from Satan’s Schemes.

From the back cover: Stand Firm Against the Devil’s Schemes

Whether you are aware of it or not, every Christian is locked in a struggle with the spiritual forces of this dark world. If our defenses are weak–or nonexistent–these enemies can, and will, slowly, subtly, lead you away from a life of righteousness.
In this tactical guide, bestselling author and trusted theologian Larry Richards offers an ironclad defense plan straight from the Bible. Using Paul’s letter to the Ephesians as his infallible guide, Richards reveals how God provides protection from every attack of the enemy–and how you can put on the full armor of God today and every day.

Including practical, hands-on exercises, this is the essential biblical approach to standing your ground against the enemy’s ploys.

Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians about the armor of God. There are five parts to God’s armor, four of which are defensive in nature. In “The Full Armor Of God” Larry Richards, in separate sections for each armor part, goes into great detail of what that armor part is and how it should be effectively used. In each section Mr. Richards gives us four chapters that always starts with “satan’s schemes”. Before getting into the armor Mr. Richards devotes the opening part to “Understanding Spiritual Forces”. Since it is important to God to provide us with His armor then it should be important to us to use His armor with wisdom and skill. Larry Richards has provided us this book to educate us in how we should be doing battle. Everyone should have a copy of this book. It is an excellent gift idea for family and friends. This is an excellent resource that will be referred back to over and over again.

About the Book:

Stand Firm Against the Devil's Schemes

Whether you are aware of it or not, every Christian is locked in a struggle with the spiritual forces of this dark world. About the Author:

Larry Richards holds a BA in philosophy from the University of Michigan, a ThM in Christian education from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a PhD in religious education and social psychology from Garrett Biblical Seminary and Northwestern University jointly. He has taught in the Wheaton College Graduate School, served as a minister of Christian education, and written over 200 books, including theological works, commentaries, and several specialty and study Bibles. Larry is currently a full-time author and speaker and lives with his wife in Raleigh, North Carolina.

My Review:

The author, Larry Richards takes us on a journey through the book of Ephesians and on to a study that the apostle Paul began centuries before. He begins with a discussion on spiritual forces of evil then and now. The main role of demons and how to combat the forces of evil. The author takes you from the beginning teaching you what each piece of the full armor of God is and what each piece means to the Christian.

The author is not only a writer but also a public speaker across the United States where he teaches Freedom Workshops. The book is a small expansion of these workshops. This book is a great Bible study on the full armor of God. Through Pauls teachings the author hopes to convey that the devil is always at work trying to mess our lives up therefore mess our spiritual walk up as well. Paul is right when he says this is a spiritual battle that we can only win if we have God on our side.

This is my first foray into the world of Larry Richards, and most likely it will be my last. The author is/was an assistant professor at the Wheaton College Graduate School. He also worked at Scripture Press writing Christian Education work, which he is most noted for.

One can only hope that work is substantially better that this book. While under the guise of a study of The Armor of God and the book of Ephesians, the book seems to be a propaganda piece about the deliverance ministry and his Freedom Workshops in particular. Included in the book is a study guide about the content of his workshop. In actuality, I would guess roughly one-third of the book is devoted to the Armor of God, one third devoted to Satan, demons, and their methods of attack; and one-third about Freedom Workshops, Deliverance Ministry, and Study Guides.

I don't evaluate content in these reviews, however, this book has come the closest to changing my mind. I feel with the third devoted to the Armor, the author could have been quite a bit more expressive, relevant, scriptural based, and illustrated his points better. If you're looking for books on the Armor of God, Deliverance and/or the works of Satan, much better ones are on the market.

The other major grievance of the book is its style. The book is almost written like a text book and not one for the general market, however, its intention is for the mass markets. Richards clearly knows his stuff, the book has some facts but is quite repetitive. Hence the book is not a complete waste. In my opinion, this book is not worth the investment in terms of dollars and if you must read it, and I emphasize the word must, check it out of the library.

Written in easy-to-read and accessible language, "The Full Armor of God" is a wonderfully practical book for any Christian seeking a balanced look at spiritual warfare. The author clearly unpacks the book of Ephesians, pulling out the truths that God reveals in this book about the nature of the world around us, and how God has given us the tools to effectively stand firm against the schemes of the evil one. I really appreciated that the author does not try to say that every problem we have in our lives is from a demonic attack, but instead recognizes a role for counselling and for other ways that God wants to free us from sin, heal us from trauma, etc. However, Larry Richards also points out that demons are working in the world around us to try to steer us away from God's promises and his perfect plan for our lives.

Reading this book is not going to leave you afraid of the spiritual realm. Instead, it will empower you with God's truth of who God has made you and called you to be, and allow you to stand firm in faith. Each section includes a very useful guide on how to apply the scripture-based principles to our own lives, and is useful not only for the individual reader but even in helping us pray for and with others.

I honestly think this is one of those books that everyone should read. I highly recommend it and award it 5 out of 5 stars.

Tucked inside the book of Ephesians is a suggestion that, as Christians, we need to put on the armor of God daily if we expect to stand firm against the devil. But how do we do that effectively?

Larry Richards, in his book “The Full Armor of God”, demonstrates how to put on each article in the armor and gives practical exercises to help you battle the spiritual ploys of the enemy. This is a very comprehensive book on putting on the spiritual armor of God. Based on the Scripture, this useful guidebook is a wonderful reference for any Bible study on Ephesians and the Armor of God.

Chapter 8 “Putting on the Helmet of Salvation” is one of my favorite chapters in the book. The prayers for confessions, renunciations and declarations will be something I use again and again. Much of what Richards relates can be turned to over and over as an encouragement and a help when dealing with attacks of the enemy.

Do you believe in the influence of spiritual beings in this world? Are you concerned about the grip they have on your life?

The Full Armor of God gives you practical steps to guard yourself against these negative forces. Instead of letting them draw you away from a life of righteousness, the author gives us a plan to follow to draw us closer to God.

Larry Richards uses Paul's letter to the Ephesians in order to show us all the tools we need.

I really enjoyed the practical side of this book. To show the different situations we face daily, and how they can be used to derail our spiritual journey in a different light was incredibly interesting. Instead of falling away from God we can use these situations or challenges to strengthen our relationship with God. With steps to follow, you are able to move ahead with God's plan for your life without falling away completely. The information in this book allows you to see challenges in a different light, almost remove yourself from the situation to see what exactly Satan is trying to do to you.

Excellent book for a look into the spiritual realm, which we often put off as a problem of ancient times, not something we see today.

Larry Richards' THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD: DEFENDING YOUR LIFE FROM SATAN'S SCHEMES is exactly what it says it is. If you're new to studying the armor of God, it is definitely well worth reading. If you're not new to studying the armor of God, it's still worth reading, just know that there isn't an awful lot in it that you might not have studied or read previously. Richards covers the information thoroughly and well....just not in a very interesting manner. Don't get me wrong; it's a very good book and well worth reading. It's just that I found myself nodding off during my reading because it just didn't read in a way that held my attention and WOWED me when it comes to writing about something so important. The Bible is the living, breathing Word of God, so it doesn't need us to make it better. I guess I just have higher expectations regarding interest level when I'm reading about something as wonderful as the armor of God.

This is a well written and very timely book. In the Bible, the book of Ephesians is where we find the reference of putting on the full armor of God. This book starts with Understanding Spiritual Forces and takes the reader all through the various elements; Helmet of Salvation, Shield of Faith, Sandals of Peace, Breastplate of Righteousness, and the Belt of Truth.
I do believe that we all are locked into a daily battle with the devil and it takes a strong mind and will to overcome this. This is called a "tactical handbook". Like it or not, we all need this information and need to learn to put it into practice on a daily basis. This book guides us through that process.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. I have read many books on how and why a Christian should put on armor before facing the day filled with attacks by Satan. This particular book had some great tips on why but fell flat on most everything else. Now this is just my opinion, you may really enjoy the book and walk away with more than I did. I did like the ample amount of scripture references used and thought the author was very open when talking about his own life. That said, the book was just OK for me and not one I will read again.

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Some extra insight to each piece you don't often hear.

I appreciated the background early in the book. This book gave a little more insight into each piece of armour, aspects that I had not heard before. I feel each piece was explained by finding patterns in Paul's letter that constantly reinforce the ideas, which is nice, something I notice myself when studying the word. Do not read if you have not read and studied the book of Ephesians first. This is supplemental. The book only lacked a good summary that clearly separates each piece by their uniqueness. But if you note what stands out to you in each piece it can give you a better understanding.

My latest Blogging for books review is "The Full Armor of God." It is a quiet time book that discusses the book of Ephesians with a focus on the armor of God. I loved the imagery of this book. The Full Armor of God was informative and reminded me of why this armor is so necessary and important. Well worth the time I took to read it. We Christians forget we are in a spiritual battle. Richards helps us understand spiritual forces in the first part of the book. then he goes through the pieces of armor in the order Paul presents them. There are exercises to help us apply his teaching, which is what he shares at his Freedom Workshops.
Every Christian would benefit from reading this book. It would be especially beneficial to those in Christian counseling.

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I am very glad of it.
I never truly understood before how demons work in our society today.
Written with an easy straightforward approach. Everyone CAN be free and productive for The Lord !!

I liked the short chapters and the take action sections at the end of each chapter. I also appreciated the appendix info. A good book!
