A chronological analysis of the writings of the poet, dramatist, novelist, critic, and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Includes discussion of his romantic novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther.
The book spends more time discussing Goethe's works than his biography and as such gives a snapshot of one of Germany's (and the world's) most accomplished, revered writers. Living over 80 years, his far-reaching influence and prolific output of diverse material (poetry, novellas, novels, and scientific papers) was astounding. He was truly ahead of his time. As a book this text is useful as an overview to see which portions of Goethe's body of work one might like to explore most, but it is likely even more useful and readable after reading more of Goethe's works.
