Protocols provide structure to conversations. As a conversation tool, protocols help us with focus, equity, reflection and summary. The nice thing about protocols is that we can use them for both teaching and learning. McDonald, et al take the concept of using protocols, which is typically in face-to-face settings and convert the tools for use in online settings. Talking and listening become more focused and reflective when using protocols and when that gets converted to an online environment discussion forums are more focused as well.

I take protocols for granted. This book reminds me not to do so, and to consider their application to the digital world of learning. Only 3 stars because I am a bit inured - not a reflection of the quality of the book overall.

I use face-to-face protocols quite often in my work. This book gives an overview of the challenges and pitfalls of online learning, and adapts the protocols in the author's companion book, The Power of Protocols, to an online environment.
