I found this book infinitely fascinating, but I was a sociology minor in college. I am also a huge nerd. Anyway, it actively held my attention, which is HUGE for scholarship. Bravo, Mr. Shilling.

Una gran reseña de distintas dimensiones en el estudio sociológico del cuerpo. Pone especial énfasis en superar la distinción entre cuerpo y mente arraigada en las concepciones filosóficas del cuerpo, así como también en ir más allá de la dicotomía entre biología/naturalismo y constructivismo, buscando siempre perspectivas que ataquen la problemática desde una solución a la dialéctica entre estructura y agencia. A pesar de ser un gran texto para comprender las numerosas teorías sociales sobre el cuerpo desde distintas escuelas y perspectivas sociológicas, sin embargo siento que su afán crítico es llevado demasiado lejos en muchas instancias, llegando a criticar básicamente a todos los autores y teorías por ser incapaces de abarcar la totalidad de la complejidad del cuerpo. Termina proponiendo la necesidad de “consolidación teórica” y propone a autores como Marx, Durkheim, Simmel y Elias para un nuevo marco general sobre el estudio de los cuerpos que los comprenda simultáneamente como una fuente (source), ubicación (location) y medio (means) para el posicionamiento de los sujetos en la sociedad.

A fantastic overview of the literature spanning sociological insight into the body up until 1993. In later editions (published in 2003) this becomes more expansive and erudite covering a plethora of topics and ideas. Its analysis on physical capital and embodiment is stunning.

Jak na naukową książkę, „Socjologię ciała” czyta się zaskakująco lekko. Shilling przytacza aktualne teorie i świetnie zbiera do kupy masę interesujących źródeł, często dając im nowe życie.

Szkoda, że polskie wydanie jest tak szpetne, bo naprawdę polecałabym wszystkim jako świetne kompendium socjologiczne dla laików i specjalistów. Bardzo się cieszę, że trafiłam na tę książkę (chociaż szczerze mówiąc nieco też się martwię, bo jest tak dobra, że ciągle chcę coraz to kolejne jej fragmenty wykorzystywać w mojej pracy mgr, a już powinnam ją kończyć pisać).

Książka spełnia swoją funkcję i jest w stanie dostarczyć informacji na temat tego, czym zajmuje się socjologia ciała. Choć przyznam, że co poniektóre zawarte w niej refleksje wydają się co najmniej dziwaczne. Można postawić problem, czy socjologia ciała to dziedzina silnie spekulatywna dotycząca tego, jak możemy/powinniśmy widzieć społeczeństwo i rolę jaką odgrywa w nim ciało (utożsamiałoby ją to z filozofią społeczną, zresztą spora część cytowanych twórców to właśnie osoby zajmujące się tym odłamem filozofii), czy jest to dziedzina, w której staramy się dowiedzieć jaką rolę to ciało pełni w społeczeństwie. Różnica pomiędzy tymi dwoma podejściami jest wręcz ogromna. W wielu momentach nie wiedziałem, czy analizy te są przeprowadzone z pierwszej czy z drugiej perspektywy. Drugim problemem jest to, jak metaforyczny i niejasny stał się język opisu współczesnych zjawisk społecznych. Dla kogoś z preferencjami do używania ściślejszych pojęć ta książka zapewne będzie katorgą. Tak czy owak, niezła praca krytyczno-przeglądowa.

This book fulfils its function and is able to provide us information what sociology of the body is and what it analyses. But I must admit that I found some reflections presented in this book rather bizarre. First problem is whether sociology of the body is highly speculative and tries to show us how we can or how we should see the society and the role the body plays in it (we can identify this branch as social philosophy then, what’s more most of the cited authors are such a kind of philosophers) or it is a part of science where we want to find what role the body in fact plays in our society. The difference between this two types of understanding is enormous. In most parts of this book I was not able to assess if the analysis are conducted from the first or second perspective. The second problem is how the language for describing modern social phenomena became unclear and full of metaphors. For someone who prefers to use more precise terms this book will be a chore. Anyway this is a quite nice critical review.

Bardzo dobre zestawienie dorobku socjologii ciała. Autor przedstawia główne perspektywy teoretyczne socjologii dotyczące ciała min. Eliasa, Bourdieu, Foucault, Goffmana, Franka, studia feministyczne i fenomenolgię, jednocześnie poddaje je krytyce. Wychodzi z ciekawą propozycją tworzenia spójnej teorii socjologii ciała uwzględniając wszystkie omówione perspektywy teoretyczne.

Pretty nice outline of how the body relates to research in social theory. Recommended as a starting point.
