Visual CBT: Using Pictures to Help You Apply Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to Change Your Life

Rate this book
Many people learn best by following a visual approach – retaining information far more successfully if that information is given to them in a visual manner. Visual CBT uses illustrations, graphics and images to help the reader to alter their thought patterns and change behaviours through CBT to become a happier, healthier individual. Uniquely, it highlights the differences between healthy and unhealthy emotional responses – for example Anxiety instead of Concern – to enable the reader to quickly "picture" how they are reacting, and bring it into line with the healthy type of response.

Avy Joseph is an experienced Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and co-founder of the companies, CityMinds and the College of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies. He is a registered and accredited therapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and a board member of The Association of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapists (AREBT).

Avy believes that an action oriented and compassionate approach to emotional problems, personal development and growth is important when working with clients. A person’s potential is often blocked by old patterns of thinking and behaviours which are learned either in childhood; or in later life, but usually maintained with or without awareness, in the present. Such beliefs and patterns are at the heart of emotions like: anxiety, depression, guilt, hurt, jealousy, anger, embarrassment and envy as well as unhelpful behaviours, thoughts and symptoms.

Avy began working as a counsellor in 1992, developing and running workshops on Relationship Problems, Phobias, Hypnosis in Dentistry, Panic Disorders as well as Goal Achievement. It was when lecturing both nationally and internationally that his interest in evidence based cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) grew. In 2001 he gained a Masters degree in rational-emotive behavioural therapy from Goldsmiths College, University of London (one of the main schools of cognitive and behavioural therapy).

After completing his Master’s degree dissertation, in combining CBT and Hypnosis, he changed his approach to Hypnotherapy, noticing the combination of CBT and Hypnosis was a very effective therapeutic intervention that resonated with his clients. This culminated in the development of cognitive behavioural therapy coursesm, hypnotherapy courses and then the launch of The College of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies.

He has recently published Confidence and Success with CBT and Visual CBT with Maggie Chapman, Co-Founder of the College. Other published works include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - your route out of perfectionism, self sabotage and other every day habits.

3 STAR RATING

I have been very interested in reading as many anxiety/depression self help books as I possibly can as I believe it's something that I need to overcome. Depression is a really awful thing to suffer from and so I am willing to do whatever it takes to cure it, improve it or even to just learn to live with it.

After reading the back of the book when I came across it at the library I thought it sounded like a fantastic idea and perhaps something that could really improve my outlook on life. I was, however, a bit disappointed with this one as in my opinion it is a very good idea which has been very poorly executed. The sections within the book became very very repetitive, I couldn't stay interested and once I had finished it it left me with a 'meh' feeling...I was definitely hoping for more.

The language in some places was a bit technical and therefore cold and uncaring, however, I did enjoy the illustrations even though they were very child-like. There are definitely better self help books out there, on the other hand, I still recommend reading this one as the idea is very interesting and the way the 'conditions' are approached is somewhat unique yet not very broad. Read this if you are willing to try anything in order to understand depression and anxiety more but I must say this one isn't at the top of my list.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a psychological treatment to help people make sense of and manage their emotions. Published by two expert practitioners in the field, and endorsed by comprehensive list of psychologists and psychiatrists, this book aims to put some of the tools of CBT into your own hands.
I am a disabled veteran with significant physical disability, post-traumatic stress disorder, and a variety of emotional problems stemming from a catalogue of sins (for example, I spent a couple of years gigging as a singer-songwriter. I imagine my audiences are still in therapy.)
CBT helps people deal with issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, psychosomatic issues – where you become physically ill because of your emotional difficulties – and even relationship problems. It helps you identify and correct the unhealthy beliefs behind your emotional pain.
This book does this through illustrations. Divided into sections on anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, hurt, jealousy, shame, and envy, it shows you pictures accompanied by a sentence associated with the feeling. It then proposes an alternative way of expressing that feeling, along with discussion about how and why we feel this way. (By the by, the pictures could have been drawn by my 5-year-old and don’t work well on Kindle, but that isn’t a big problem.)
It works like a supermarket. You stroll through the pages, pick out things you recognise, then you start trying to reformulate your thoughts. It helps just seeing something you are feeling expressed in words, knowing you’re not alone and knowing there’s an alternative. After that, the book is very clear that there is a lot of work – changing a habitual line of thought for something new is difficult and takes time.
But it has helped me already. And if you’re hurting, and looking for a path out, I can’t recommend this highly enough.

Really great book- As a therapist, I think this book has room on your bookshelf. It is a very straightforward and practical application of basic CBT components. I recommend.

This title is the latest I have read in a number of books I have taken out of my local library in order to address the issues I have with my mental health, which includes depression, anxiety and several other issues. It's presented well, with a sub-title on the front page offering "using pictures to help you apply cognitive behavioural therapy to change your life", which as a visual learner I thought seemed like a promising read.

The book is split into eight main chapters as well as an introduction and post script. The chapters are as follows:

1. Anxiety and Concern
2. Depression and Sadness
3. Anger and Annoyance
4. Guilt and Remorse
5. Hurt and Disappointment
6. Jealousy and Concern for One's Relationship
7. Shame and Regret
8. Envy and Healthy Envy

The aim of each chapter is to replace the former unhealthy emotion (e.g. anxiety) with the latter, more healthy version (e.g. concern), and learning how to react to triggering circumstances with a more rational outlook. The idea is to learn to stop using self defeating beliefs that provoke negative emotions and actions and replace them with those that let you see the bigger picture and accept a philosophy of healthy living.

The book aims are to (roughly quoted)
"1. Clarify emotions, behaviours and goals
2. Identify unhealthy beliefs that are at the heart of the emotional problems and that sabotage our goals
3. Dispute them and replace them with a healthier version in order to get better through consistent and constructive action
4. Generalise the change to other areas of life"

Other reviewers have marked the book down for it's repetition, but it is this that's at the heart of the whole point of CBT as change requires repetition and consistency, so is it any surprise that each chapter's emotions are approached in the same way? It would only be confusing if they were to adopt a different strategy for tackling the unhealthy emotions focused on in each chapter. Personally I found the repetition very helpful as by the end of the book I had learnt what to do, was taking less notes and was more familiar with the process of changing unhealthy emotion to a healthy one.

In summary, personally I have found this book very helpful and would recommend it. The visuals and diagrams appeal to my type of learning, I have made a lot of notes from it and I have also created myself multiple worksheets from the questions and activities in the book so that I can go back and repeat them at a later date.
