"This was my life now? Two goddesses who couldn't be any more different, and the mix of divine beings in between?"
Tressia Jane Jones was an average high school student, making good grades and trying to skate under the popular girl's radar. But TJ was Gifted, meaning she had been granted an extraordinary power at birth. Not only that, but when TJ's best friend Valencia goes missing, TJ is determined to find her, thrusting herself into a world she could only begin to imagine.
Theodoris Parker would do anything to get his best friend back, but one slip up could cost him the girl of his dreams, and Theo's luck may have just run out. Ensnared by the alluring promises of a mythical goddess, Theo is unable to escape the price of his newfound power, a price he isn't willing to pay.
While TJ and Val are struggling to comprehend the mess they found themselves in, their best friend Theo is the only person who can save them...or destroy them.
A fantastic read! I am honored to have Ms. Templeton as my student, and I am extremely impressed by her accomplishment!
When I first found out that she had written this novel as a freshman, I eagerly bought a copy, but settled in honestly expecting to not really be blown away. I will admit to making the assumption that the writing of a fourteen year old might not be up to snuff when sustained for 300+pages. I was delighted to discover the book is great!
There is deft and mature wordplay, fully developed characters with distinct voices, clever plotting, great worldbuilding, and some pretty doggone exciting action sequences. Gifted takes tropes and concepts found in a lot of fantasy/adventure fiction and subverts them in very interesting ways and demonstrates quite inventive approaches to things like magical abilities. I found myself invested throughout in the story and the lives of the characters.
I will be a Jorden Templeton fan for life, and look forward to the next book she publishes!
