I love reading anything related to Tom Landry, but this was bad. If this book was a football team, it would be the 1-15 Dallas Cowboys of 1989. The author mentions in the preface that he had never written a book before, and unfortunately it is obviously the case. This debut was a fumble.
This book covers 20 principles in 20 chapters, each chapter highlighting one person who knew Landry and they discuss how each principle was exemplified by the Cowboys organization.
Supposedly, the author interviewed all these people, but each chapter is very similar to the previous, filled with inspirational cliches about winning and hard work. Hardly any of the interviewed former players spoke of any specific anecdotes that could have made this a great book. Of the 20, the chapters by Roger Staubach and Alicia Landry were the most interesting.
The book is filled with spelling errors. He misspelled Jim Myers as “Meyers” multiple times. One chapter’s title is: Be Completely Confidant. “Perserverance” shows up a couple times, which could easily be caught by spell check or an editor.
This book was a treasure trove of cheesy inspirational quotes by Tony Robbins, John Wooden, Teddy Roosevelt and others.
I’m not sure why there was nearly 100 of these quotes.
Finally, it was funny to see how each chapter begins with a statistic highlighting some aspect of Landry’s best 20 year run. In 2012 when the book was published the Cowboys were #1 in each category; now the Patriots have surpassed the Cowboys in all but one, and the Steelers have passed many of the marks.
Overall this book was not very interesting which is a shame because all the interesting stories that this could have contained.

Probably this book has put together the principles of success from the football point of view, it does apply to every field and everyone in life.You have to keep your options open and look around for chances because you never know when your life will dramatically change. This point has been clearly explained through the experience of the Cowboys. Especially the last 5 chapters are extremely encouraging and thought provoking concepts. Definitely recommended for those who are looking for something special to happen on their life!!
