Nothing seems beyond a doubt when Bree opens a cold-case file with clues too close for comfort.
Arson. Theft. Murder. When Bree Nicholls discovers a corpse in her own basement, a whirlwind investigation ushers an unbidden danger to all she holds dear. Without safe haven in her lighthouse home--or in the arms of a new love--the young widow struggles to free her family from the tentacles of an age-old crime that strikes at the heart of Rock Harbor.
Beyond a Doubt is second in the acclaimed romantic suspense series from best-selling author Colleen Coble. Set in the untamed beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Rock Harbor novels deftly draw readers into the life and operation of a canine search-and-rescue team as they help unravel the secrets of an enchanting wilderness.
USAToday bestselling author Colleen Coble lives with her husband, Dave, in Arizona. She is the author of dozens of novels including the Rock Harbor Series, the Aloha Reef Series, the Mercy Falls Series, the Hope Beach Series, the Lonestar Series and two Women of Faith fiction selections, Alaska Twilight and Midnight Sea. She has more than 6 million books in print.
The mystery in this novel was intriguing and that's the only thing that kept me reading it. I really had trouble with the main character - she was as dense as a box of rocks. I really have a hard time enjoying the book when I have so little respect for the character's intelligence.
I also wish that "bible thumper" authors would label their books as such. I wouldn't have bought it, if I had known ahead of time. Every other page crams Christian religion down the reader's throat. I wish the author would have spent more time crafting her story and characters and less time forcing Jesus on the reader.
The book also did not have an ending. It just sort of... stopped. I don't know anything about this author, so I'm assuming that this book is part of a series and the main character's life will be settled at another time, but it was weird to have the book just sort of peter out and end when it did.
After finding the first in the series just o.k. I was pleased to find Beyond a Doubt much more interesting and enjoyable. I was especially drawn to Lauri's story.
I have forgotten how much I liked this series, I gave most of it 3 stars when I first read it but now its a solid 4 stars. The story of Bree and her journey after losing her husband in a plane crash and how she continues her life and grows from a non Christian to her putting her total faith in God in all she does. I think this is Colleen Coble best series. If you are looking to reading a Colleen Coble series I definitely would start this one!!
Book 2 in the Rock Harbor series continues the focus on the small Lake Superior town of Rock Harbor and it's citizens. During the remodel of her lighthouse basement, Bree Nicholls' carpenter, discovers a corpse which turns out to be the long missing lighthouse keeper. This leads to numerous other discoveries that keeps the suspense level high from start to finish.
Once again, Coble's focus is on the suspense with just a light touch of romance thrown in. Kade Matthews finds he now has competition for Bree's affection from the new fireman in town. But once again, he frustrates me no end as he still can't vocalize his feelings for Bree. There's also teenage trouble in town with vandalism, drugs, and border running. The man who is heading up all the trouble is a surprise to everyone when he is finally revealed.
Coble kept my attention from start to finish and leaves just enough threads hanging to make me anxious to discover what happens next in Rock Harbor.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "Not all of our trials are discipline for sin; but He sometimes allows trials so that our faith might be strengthened and so that we might come nearer to His side."
"We can even deceive ourselves into thinking we are Christian or that we are following God. But when adversity comes the true believer will still weather it standing, though he may go through a fire of doubt."
"Sometimes asking for forgiveness can be a daily thing...We know we don't deserve it, and we still keep turning our guilt over to God until we can finally believe he means what He says about---then it's gone."
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaway and Thomas Nelson Publishing to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done. I received no compensation.
This book is amazing! Beyond A Doubt really contains all the suspense you could ever think of! It brings through the power of friendship and not giving up. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspenseful books and mysteries.
The mystery in this story was really good. The reason for giving only three stars is because the book hit a slow patch when drugs and teen pregnancy became the central focus. Neither were even hinted at on the back-cover copy, so they came as quite a shock to me, and not a pleasant one. (Another reason was the inclusion of expletives, inappropriate for the Christian genre.)
I wasn’t sure about the love triangle that popped up late in the story, but I like the way the book ended. It made me look forward to the next book, even though I am not a fan of one of the two men attempting to get Bree’s attention. I’m interested to see what direction the next book will take, as well as what mystery will befall Rock Harbor.
The climax, to me, was well thought out and high on the tension. I rather enjoyed it and stayed up late to finish this one off.
I wish Ms. Coble would write cleaner books, because her style is often enjoyable. The inclusion of expletives always hampers my enjoyment of her stories, as they pull me away from the story line so I can guard my mind from the naughty words.
Content: teen pregnancy drugs & teen drug usage alcohol tobacco products expletives derogatory term teen smoking & drinking
Side note: I found one factual error that included an inconsistency within the story. It was stated that "hair does not decompose," but it does, though at a different rate than the rest of the body. The rate fluctuates depending upon the materials that surround the hair. The inconsistency that disproved the "fact" within the book was that one skeleton was found with no hair while a different piece of evidence was found with hair. Both had been "dead" for the same amount of time and in similar circumstances, so I found it improbable that such a stark difference would be realistic. This did not weigh on my rating, though it did pull me out of the story so I could research to see whether my disbelief of the statement was correct.
I enjoyed this story. It has a very christian bent and is a story about a mom dealing with a traumatized son, Danny, and her friend Anu, also has some problems in her past. There is smuggling, unplanned pregnancy, and love triangles. Overall a good book.
I struggle with Colleen Coble's books and am about ready to give up on them. They have great story lines, plot twists, relationships, but the books fall apart. I can't believe they get published. With this series, I can't get myself to care for the people. I was 20 pages from being done and abandoned it for something else because I really didn't care how it ended. Sad. I think there is a great premise here, but I get confused on if Rock Harbor is a small town or big city. Why do we have characters in book two that weren't in book one? I don't find Bree a likeable heroine although I understand that Ms. Coble is trying to make her a flawed individual we can all relate to.
WOW!!! w/ each of her books that i read, she just keeps getting better and better and ...
i am SO glad that i started this one over a holiday wk/end so that i had more chance to read it. i STILL should have been doing housework or something, BUT ...
again, WOW!!! this book was just SO good, and again, i never did have an inkling of "whodunit" til near the very end. i was thinking someone else as usual!
Colleen Coble in her new book “Beyond A Doubt” Book Two in the Rock Harbor series published by Thomas Nelson gives us another adventure with Bree Matthews and Samson, her search-and-rescue dog.
From the back cover: Evidence of a violent crime in Bree’s basement causes police to re-open a cold case. Can she and her K-9 search dog, Samson, stop the killer before he strikes again?
Bree Nicholls has made a name for herself finding missing persons and solving mysteries in the untamed wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with her faithful search-and-rescue dog, Samson. Yet she still doubts herself, grieving the loss of her husband and longing for her young son’s forgiveness.
When a basement remodeling project at her lighthouse home uncovers evidence from a case the Rock Harbor police gave up on long ago, Bree’s family comes under attack. Someone wants something from the house . . . or possibly someone.
Ranger Kade Matthews steps in to help, winning Bree’s friendship and making real headway with her son, Davy. But there’s still a killer somewhere in Rock Harbor. It will take everything Bree and Samson can do to protect her family from the danger lurking outside the lighthouse door.
Bree Matthews and Samson, her specially trained dog, are a K-9 search and rescue team in the rugged wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The minute I hear search-and-rescue I immediately feel the immediacy of the moment. Someone is missing, there is trouble involved and there is no time to waste. Colleen Coble knows exactly how to bring all of that to the story and more. Danger, suspense, mystery “Beyond A Doubt” has it all. A cold case that becomes hot again. A murderer will stop at nothing to prevent anyone from finding out who he is. The lives of Bree and her family are in danger and it is going to take everything that Bree and Sampson can give to find out what is going on. This is a fast-paced read that will keep you flipping pages to keep up with the story. Ms. Coble has done an outstanding job. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series with Bree Matthews at Rock Harbor.

Colleen Coble definitely raised the mystery and intrigue up a notch. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and it kept my mind turning as Bree tried to figure it all out. These same characters are back and I thoroughly enjoyed getting another peek into their lives.
What I Liked: This one was a lot more suspenseful than the last one and I felt dread and fear right along with Bree as she dealt with her raging stalker and then figures out there's much more to the mystery than meets the eye.
I read this book in just a few days. I was happy to see Naomi's joy as she marries the man of her dreams and settles down to married life. Naomi always has such wisdom and I love her encouragement to Bree. Naomi and Bree are close and their close friendship is sweet.
I really liked Kade in this book, as well. He's going through a whole lot concerning his sister in this book and doesn't necessarily know what to do. I feel for him as he's making hard decisions and trying to respond appropriately to different circumstances in his life. This author did an excellent job showing imperfect humans, but a perfect God working through the lives of His children. I felt bad for Kade and wished Bree had a little bit more understanding for him in this book.
The ending, once again, was not what I expected. I'm not going to say anymore. You'll just have to pick up this book for yourself. :)
What I Didn't Like: While I really loved this mystery and it kept me intrigued and I liked the Biblical message and all of Anu's wisdom to her daughter-in-law, one thing did bother me. There was one time in this book where a very minor character (I think he only makes one appearance in the whole book), uses an abbreviation of a phrase using very bad language. I get the guy was upset and might not use pure language, but I strongly believe that the author (especially a Christian author) can spare the reader bad language. It shouldn't even be in the story. Besides that, this was a good book.
I give this book 5 stars for a suspenseful story and a good Christian message about accepting God's forgiveness.
Preachy author pushing conservative, Christian values. Awful Christian characters with atheist villains.
I guess it's my fault for not checking on GoodReads if the mystery/suspense/thriller books I'm buying are Christian Fiction.
What a boring read. It was obvious who the villains were. I immediately knew Abe was back and that the doctor was villainous. The scenes that should have had my heart beating with tension were boring. The main character was unbearable. I mean who keeps their phone in their car?! Who doesn't charger their phone?! At that point, I didn't care what happened to her.
Then there was a random love triangle. I wasn't invested in the main character's relationship in the first place and now you're putting in a love triangle as if I care?
Then there are all the anti-abortion messages. Saying stuff like "why did she let him touch her if she didn't want a baby", "if she was smart, she would've waited until marriage", "I will lock you up to prevent you from getting an abortion", "having a child is the consequence of your actions". All this while the guy preventing the girl from getting an abortion claims that he loves her and wants the best for her. Please.
Then there's this underlying message that only Christians are good people. It seems every non-Christian is a villain. They're murderers or smugglers.
There's a whole thing where they seem to shame women who engage in premarital sex (yes, outside the teen pregnancy thing). They act like having sex before marriage means your partner doesn't respect you.
Or there's the bit where they look down on people who commit suicide for tossing "God's gift away". Like??? These people need psychological help, not a crazy extremist judging them.
Another great story about the Rock Harbor, MI area and the people that live there. There were murders, old and new, that get solved. I had to keep reading to see who did it and to see how the relationships develop. I have to read the next in the series as this one ended too soon. I really want to go visit Rock Harbor and meet these people...
Absolutely amazing mystery set in small-town America! I LOVED the second in this series as much as the first. I am beginning the third immediately. I cannot get enough of Colleen Coble. I have definitely found a new favorite author!!!!! I recommend this to all my friends and family.
Another great book in this series - I am so hooked and can't wait to get into the next book to continue to find out where Bree, her son, the competion between Kade and Nick over Bree, and her search and rescue dog Samson lives lead to within the next mystery.
Bree is known for being able to find missing people. Her search-and-rescue dog, Samson, is just as famous. When she decides to remodel the basement in the lighthouse she owns, a body is discovered. This starts a train of events that will change the lives of everyone who lives in Rock Harbor and shed light on some lies people have believed for years.
I'm a fan of Ms. Coble so it was no surprise that I enjoyed this story. She mixes mystery, suspense, romance, faith, and family so that they are seamless. The characters stand out and are distinguishable. I definitely enjoyed reading this book and raced through it. There were a few sticking points for me though, that made it not quite up to the five star quality. The romance was weak for me. Just didn't get the chemistry between the two main characters. The book is definitely NOT a stand alone and ends, for the most part, on a cliff hanger for most of the characters. I felt very lost for portions of the book because I could tell I was missing something. There is another Rock Harbor series that is more geared towards children and I wondered how many of those characters were in the book since it felt like I was missing way more elements than just the previous book. But I still enjoyed it and think that if I'd read everything previous to this book, it wouldn't have been an issue.
I received a copy of this book from Goodreads. All thoughts expressed are my own.
There's no good reason for me not to fall in love with these books and this story line. I really wanted to, but I can't seem to fall into the book. A continuation, more info about the characters, struggles, danger, mystery.
3 stars One hundred percent my fault. I didn’t see the classification of ‘Christian Mystery’ when I bought this book. It just kept jerking me out of the story.
I really wanted to like this story, but it kept getting more unbelievable as it went on. I will say that Coble infused some Christian faith into the story; that, I appreciate. But I just never have been a fan of her stories, at least the first two in this series. I think it will be easier for me to itemize what I didn’t like. 1. Formatting: the Kindle version is terrible! Every other page has a paragraph in smaller, indented font. Why hasn’t this been fixed yet? 2. Why would Bree be the one to uncover stuff when the LE personnel are credible? 3. LE wouldn’t allow her to question a suspect. 4. If Bree loved Samson so much, why didn’t she take him to the vet to have him checked out after he was kicked or hit? 5. It wasn’t clear to me that Rock Harbor is inside a National Park Service site. 6. Bree isn’t a very likable character, IMO, although I get that the author is trying to show that none of us are perfect and that she has flaws. 7. The story jumps around and leaves situations unresolved.
I could probably think of more to itemize, but these are the main points. I’m really sorry. But I do hope that the formatting throughout the book is corrected.

I really liked the first book of this series. I also really liked the main character, Bree, and her dog, Samson. I think the idea of the setting in Rock Harbor, MI and the search and rescue dog element. However, this second book was harder for me to get into for some reason and it seemed to much put on that so many mysterious things, people, bodies, and personal dramas would be happening is such a small town and out of the way place. The first book seemed so natural and believable. I know this is fiction, but sometimes some types of fiction are better when they are a little more realistic. Not something I would recommend when someone already has so many other books to read on their to-read list.
This is the second book in the series about Bree and her search & rescue dog, Samson. Basically a mystery /adventre / love story it started out somewhat promising. But about halfway through it just kind of fell flat for me. There were too many characters to keep track of and I think they were mostly introduced to keep us guessing who the bad guy was. The best part of the book for me was just following up with the characters since I had read the first book, otherwise I don't think I would have cared aout any of them. The plot istelf was not that interesting to me and definitely not believable.
