I received an ARC from NetGalley and Mills and Boon. I am happy to give an honest, unbiased review.

This is a fairly entertaining historical romance and I did enjoy it, although I do question the historical authenticity of much of the plotting and characterisation. I do understand that writers need to make their books attractive to modern audiences and so all female protagonists have to be feisty, independent, intelligent woman who challenge the status quo. However, I do feel there is a danger of re-writing history to bring the women of the past up to date with the culture of the 21st century - and thereby diminishing the very real problems that women faced two hundred years ago.

Nonetheless- this is avery well written and the author has created engaging and interesting characters.

Miss Pike’s finishing school might be designed to find the most unconventional of debutantes a husband, but Gwendoline Knox didn’t expect to literally bump into a duke on her first day! Let alone one as distractingly charming as Percy Deveraux, Duke of Knaresby.
The start of a new series & an enjoyable romance. The story flowed well & the characters had depth I really liked Gwen, who was intelligent & feisty & certainly no wallflower. I grew to like Percy, I also liked the secondary characters & hope we meet again in future books. There were a couple of secrets as well as twists which added to my enjoyment. Overall an enjoyable, entertaining romance

This was a blend of contemporary and regency

Gwen was a hoot, she lacked that so-important brain-to-mouth filter and it tended to get her in a lot of trouble
Her mom was something else

Percy, newly titled, was about to learn that the title he carried didn't mean immediate automatic respect from everyone. He was also about to find himself very enamored with a not-so-wallflower wallflower

The chemistry between these two was instant. The back-and-forth banter between them just felt natural.
Solid secondary characters
If you are looking for historical accuracy this will fall short
However, if you are looking for an easy-to-follow storyline with engaging characters and a sweet romance that entertains from the opening scene to the closing
This would be it
An all-around fun read

Not my favourite by this author. While the story had it's entertaining moments and the idea itself is good. However, I felt that it dragged on more than it should have and was getting very fed up of the constant not suitable for a duchess message from Percy. The only reason for this was because his brother told him a duchess should be blonde etc. The angst felt forced until the end when there was perhaps a genuine reason for concern. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review

I liked Gwen and the other wall flowers a lot. Percy, he deserved the third act break up. And the cover is fun for the book. The only negative I think is the narrative is too modern in some places.

Love, most reluctantly, hops, skips & plunges feet first, across the social divide!
An enjoyable series starter that really sets the scene for some feisty, bold shenanigans yet to be imagined. As a rebel in the making meets the highly underestimated and overlooked...forced into the box of 'wallflower'...and hypes up the sweet promise of Rilla and Sylvia's tales yet to come.
Gwen shipped off to Wallflower Academy, by her hateful mother, under the guise of attaining a husband, stumbles upon the newly appointed duke, Percy, when at her most prickly and vulnerable. Unapologetically unfawning and bluntly frustrating might spark the most unexpected tingles of attraction for a lady from Percy, but he sure can't deny how her boldness fascinates and draws him in like a moth to a flame.
Secrets, past guilt, familial promises and that old bugbear of the impossibility of marriage - never mind love - across the social divide, rises up to bite the pair most profoundly in this fun, low angst romance.
An engaging read, that hooks you in as feelings intensify, the promise of romance spirals and a subtle yet burning escalating need, swirls into a binding connection and befuddles them with the instinctual impulse to remain so tantalisingly close. Blooming a fear that desire will lead them irreparably down a path that can only lead to heartbreak if marriage is forever off the table.
With the intimacy of a touch of spice to rack up the building of tension, alongside an unspoken murderous secret and two most intriguingly witty fellow 'wallflowers' to be swept up by and enjoy, really helped make Gwen and Percy's tale, both delightful and compellingly frustrating as their insecurities and many a seemingly insurmountable hurdle stood in their path.
An entertaining series opener; I will definitely be returning to the Wallflower Academy!

A steamy book. A lady sent to a wallflower academy by her mother meets a duke.
I must admit I was confused by this book. Gwen it seems is the daughter of an Inn Keeper, so it is likely she is a commoner or possibly a Cit. She has ‘murdered’ a member of the aristocracy and mother has sent her to the academy to keep her out of the way, although it seems she just wants to get rid of her. Why has Gwen not been arrested? It turns out the chap
Is a duke. I am sure there would be an investigation if he aristocracy/ton. No mention of this. It is not clear what status Percy was before inheriting but it seems he has no idea of day to day etiquette, ie he cannot see the problem with picking up a lady in his carriage and it is his coachman he raises the issue. Really. If his uncle was a duke then he would have been taught these things and would have known.
This brings us on to the etiquette at the Academy. I very much doubt that Miss Pike would have allowed any of her pupils to go anywhere unchaperoned, as seemed to happen with Gwen frequently, never mind a duke wandering about the premises as he wishes. I am sure some pupils would have trapped him in a compromising position very quickly if that was the case. And when their parents heard of some of these things it would have seemed very scandalous and looked down on accordingly. There are some other anomalies. Sylvia is with Gwen and Rilla, yet when they descend it seems
Sylvia has disappeared, only to be there (introduced ) when the Duke is introduced. At the end Miss Pike calls the dowager Duchess’My Lady’. It would be ‘Your Grace’, not a mistake a principal of an Academy teaching etiquette would make. Sorry I do like a lot
of this author’s books, but this one has numerous issues hence the rating.

Gwen is dispatched to the wallflower academy by her, less than a candidate for mother of the year material, female parent (I'm being kind).
She is told that she is culprit of a terrible crime and that no one will ever marry her. Her loving , yeah right, female parent also says that she lacks beauty and puts her down as any occasion presents itself.

What the old bitty does not realize is that sending her only daughter away is the best thing that could have happened to Gwen. I don't mind if I never mention that poor excuse for a mother again.

At the academy, she is greeted by Miss Pike, the owner, because, let us face it, this no academy as we know it. Sent to her room, she has the happy occasion to meet Sylvia, an outspoken African English woman full of humour and mischief as well as Rilla, a beautiful woman who is brilliant but happens to be struck with blindness.

After learning about how things are runned at the academy and what is expected socially, Gwen freaks out and litterally runs into a Duke.

As I do not want to reveal the plot, I will simply add that the book is well written. However the story resembles more a romantic novel, partially historical because such places as the academy existed, the nobles, for the most part, were snobs, the lady of the noble household had the last word and, handicappedd or racially different persons were treated as less in the so called aristrocratic society.

I also found that the book was long to read with many repetitive scenes and I rate the book 3.5 Stars rounded to 4.

3.75 STARS - ROUNDED UP

I loved the h with her honesty and spunk. The H and his mother I didn't care for at all! The secondary characters helped me enjoy this story. I can't wait for the 2 friends to get their HEA.

The h has a major secret, as does the H's mother. Oh, how the author unveiled them, added a nice twist to the story.

The H kept coming around the h because he couldn't stay away. But, kept telling her over and over why they couldn't be together. Talking about using someone! Then we have his mother who hosts a tea for the Wallflowers. Wow, what a -itch, as was the h's mother.

Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 4 out of 5 and only described once. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and some steam. I didn't find the story very romantic because how the H treated the h. I did enjoy the relationship the h had with her friends.

I received an ARC from Bookfunnel and all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)

A Complicated Passion!

Well what a brilliant series starter and congratulations to Ms Murdoch on this wonderful first book in the series. Full of tenderness and passion with a twist that will surprise you, it will have you sighing at the highs and lows as you get engrossed in this page-turning read.

Percy had not been a Duke very long but once he set eyes on Gwen, he just couldn’t forget about her, he knew she was inappropriate and not what he would be looking for in a wife but sometimes you have to give into what the heart wants.

Gwen has a secret past, one that she knew would never allow her to be with a Duke but still she couldn’t stay away from him.

Enjoy this wonderful emotional storyline and follow the journey of this hero and heroine as they find out who they really are and that love can overcome most if not all obstacles.

“Least Likely to Win a Duke” (The Wallflower Academy, book 1) by Emily E.K. Murdoch
Secrets and Biases
I didn’t fall in love with this story, but I did really like it. This was a most interesting twist on Regency romance. I was very impatient when reading this story. I just could not read fast enough to keep my curiosity of what I would find on the next page satiated. I hope you enjoy your time in this story. I am already looking forward to the next story in this series. Happy Reading ! !

Having an Academy for Wallflowers was very entertaining. Gwen had past that she was hiding from. Percy was a reluctant duke. Their worlds collided, and things spiraled from there. Gwen was spirited, and Percy was trying to live up to his brother's ideals. There were some steamy moments as well as a few tearful moments. When secrets and truths came out, love won the day. I enjoyed the supporting characters and look forward to the next in the series. One downside, I felt that some of the situations were a bit forced or dragged out, but overall, a good story.

I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.

Gwen and Percy are meant to be together. As a couple they are most unlikely. For a most unlikely wallflower! Part of The Wallflower Academy. Not this authors usual style of book, much harder to get into. Did particularly like either main character but do want to know how Rilla gets on, I'm sure she'll find her happy ever after.
The whole premise that Gwen would be sent to a finishing school for wallflower after what she's done is ridiculous. The matriarch in both families are dreadful, and Percys mother who has the arrogance of a dowager duchess, without being more than sister in law to A duke, was at least believable until the epilogue when she became a new person.
I liked Rilla, but didn't care much for the others. To think a finishing school owner or the other girls wouldn't know a man stayed overnight isn't realistic.

Least Likely To Win A Duke is set in an academy for wallflowers. While the concept seems contemporary, the idea of hiding away troublesome young women fits well with Regency society and the need for women to conform. The female characters are complex and easy to like. Percy, the new Duke, is constrained by his familial and societal expectations, making it harder to empathise with him. The story is a good balance of humour, poignancy, passion, and romance. I like the concept, the characters and the romance in this story.

Gwen was sent away to a special wallflower school because of what happened when she literally runs into Percy. For someone who is determined to marry a specific type of lady he plays fast and loose with her affections making her do things that would have ruined her in society, even seducing her without making any promises and letting his mother belittle her. When the truth about her past comes to light, he runs without getting the full story. This was a steamy across classes romance. I liked the other wallflowers and I’m looking forward to their romances.

I really enjoyed this historical romance novel by Emily E.K Murdoch.
I was hooked from the very first page. The story was easy to follow and enjoyable and the characters were likeable. It had just a hint of spice, sometimes too much can take away the story but it was spot on. A very enjoyable read that I highly recommend.
❤️ Thank you to netgalley, Mills and Boon Insiders and the author for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved it! Very well written historical romance with some twists and turns.
I had to warm up to the Duke Percy but really got to like him later on. Loved Gwendoline! I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
The secondary characters where fun and interesting and hopefully will reappear in one of the books in the series.

Gwen is sent away to a finishing school after a horrible accident and someone died. She literally runs into Percy her first day there. Percy is persistent even though as a duke he must marry a woman with a title. Percy is hot and cold and gives Gwen mixed messages. She goes from being cynical to hopeful. When Percy finally makes up his mind, he finds out Gwen's secret and things blow up. Hopefully they can find forgiveness for each other.

I finished by skimming anything that wasn't dialogue. The rest of it was making sure that we knew that these characters are miserable. It goes on and on. Any time they might be a bit less miserable, they misunderstand something and overreact so that they can be miserable again. Of course, I probably misunderstood some things because these characters tend to not finish their sentences, so I had to guess what they meant. I have no idea what the scene at Almack's was about, for example.

A great start to a new series with a happy ever after ending. I thought it would finish about a third of the way through but then a twist I was not expecting came about. A few surprises along the way. Great support characters, interested to see if they appear in future books. I am not into the authenticity of the history as some reviewers are so cannot comment on that I just liked it.

Enjoyed this story very much, the characters are well written and interesting, the storyline has its ups and downs. Gwen was sent to the Wallflowers's Academy in disgrace, hiding a grave secret that could spell disaster for her and her family if it should ever come to light. What she never expected to do was to bump into Percy a Duke no less.

Gwen a wallflower with a secret and Percy a duke who can not make up his mind about about his feelings and future with Gwen. A controlling mother on each side puts a wrench in things. Sylvia and Rilla are quite characters in the story.

I like Emily's writing style. The theme of a wallflower academy was interesting and I liked the supporting characters. The hero took some taking to, a bit of a snob considering his own background, but he did have some redeeming traits. A nice first novel kicking off this new series. I look forward to reading the rest.

A wallflower academy…

Gwendoline Knox is literally knocked over by Percy, a duke.
He must have her since she wants nothing to do with him.
She has a killer secret. He’s used to women falling at his feet and simpering.
Fun and flirty.

Unfortunately, the lack of research into the historical period ( whatever that was..Regency?) annoyed me greatly. The book was a modern romance plonked into the historical genre.
