I have to pay for what I've done. It's my fault. It's my fault... that everyone died."
"I see. In that case go ahead and die, then. If you wanna die then you can go kill yourself. Don't dirty someone else's hands."

I'm... I'm absolutely shocked. And emotional. I'm an emotional mess right now, so bare with me, because this review might not make any sense to you, I'm writing it right after finishing reading the volume (which I usually don't do, trying to give myself time to think everything through).

I didn't expect to see a flashback, an Umemiya flashback of all things. I mean, he's on the cover of this volume, but, you know, so many times you gets a volume with someone and that someone doesn't appear in any of the chapters or just has a little things to do with what's happening.

But AN UMEMIYA FLASHBACK?! So, so INCREDIBLY PAINFUL of all things?! I'm absolutely SPEECHLESS!! And heartbroken!!

IT'S AN EMERGENCY!! WHERE THE HELL ARE MY TISSUES?! 😭

Hey, hey, stop, stop, stop. Let's get a deep breath and clarify one thing before we will get to the actual review. I wanted to read Vol. 1 first, as I should, but I recently finished watching season 2 of the anime and I just couldn't help myself, I needed to know what had happened after, so here I am, writing a review for Vol. 12 instead of Vol. 1.

Now that's cleared up, I can begin my review.

It doesn't matter who I fight, I've already decided that I ain't letting any of my guys get beat up." [Sakura]

After the sudden meeting with Yamato Endo, the Bofurin members are even more active than usual, going on patrols more frequently and having tough trainings with the older high school students. Everyone's tired, but get up and fight more, because of Sakura's influence. The townspeople are also helping, giving compliments and presents to the flustered kids. But the real focus of Vol. 12 is put on Hajime Umemiya, who decided to tell his (and Furin's) story to Sakura.

What... have you done? It's your fault... that I didn't get to die..." [Umemiya]

Whatever I expected about Umemiya's past, I didn't expect what we've got. No one would expect this, considering his incredibly bright and sunny personality. Anybody else would succumb to depression or anger, but not Hajime Umemiya. Not with the support that he got. I cried so much while reading this volume, I cried, and cried, and cried, to the point that I thought that the pain will never stop. It was heartbreaking, truly heartbreaking, not only because of Ume's bright personality, but because of the fact that it's all happened when he was just a child. Children should never get through such a loss, such a desperation, such a pain. Children should never feel like they don't deserve to live, that they don't deserve to mourn, to cry, to get out all the feelings that they bury inside. It teared me apart, truly. But then I smiled, I smiled a lot, through the tears, because the little Ume had help. He had people that cared about him and tried to keep him safe. And because the little Ume, one who wanted to become an older brother so badly, got the siblings he so desperately needed and wanted to have through the existence of Bofurin.

as long as we're facing each other and we care deeply for one another, then it doesn't matter if we're not connected by blood. We're still family!"

I cannot explain how much I LOVE stories like this. Stories that, yes, have violence and blood and issues, but also have an incredibly emotional connection between the characters - to the point that they feel not just like friends, but a family. A family that will go through hell for one another. A family that supports each other, inspires each other and has each other's backs. It's how I feel about Bofurin, and I'm so proud of Umemiya that he managed to create such a safe space for all these lost boys (like Sakura). He created a place worth to go to war for.

"There is one thing that I know for sure. The reason why I'm who I am now... the reason why this place is the way it is... is all because of him." [Sakura about Ume]

I'm trying to be as spoiler free as possible, despite vibrating with all the emotions and need to talk, but before I will end my review, I just need to point out the connection that Sakura and Umemiya have. It's something that I didn't know I needed and something that I hope will be explored later on. I wonder what's the backstory of Sakura, actually. Did the anime explore it already? Did I just forgot it? I cannot say (maybe I need a rewatch). But if not, I need to see what was Sakura's life like before he came to the town. Why he's living all alone? It's only one of the questions I have about his character.

P.S. I really love the relationship between Umemiya and Hiragi. He's the sunshine and Hiragi is the shark-like boy, it's something so precious to me and I'm so happy that I got to see their first meeting and how they became friends.

P.P.S. This volume introduced a guy that wasn't named and mentioned another nameless person that influenced two important people in Ume's life to go to Furin. I wish I know who these people are and I wonder if they will come back in the future.

P.P.P.S. AFTER READING THIS VOLUME, ITS COVER MAKES ME SO EMOTIONAL, HELP 😭

Anyways, let's dive into Vol. 13 right away! I'm so excited! Hopefully I will not cry much! ;)

whoa whoa WHOA, there are so many to unpack, but not sure why i was so fixated on two points:
1. umemiya's backstory
2. the LAST CHAPTER??? helloooo????? i was too stunned to speak bc???? the implied intimacy slash whatever-gore metaphors-nii satoru tried to use here ..... so so astonishing to the point it's tattooed inside my skull. i will be thinking about this exact moment for a long time bc it reminds me a LOT of persuasion quote, "you pierce my soul. i am half agony, half hope."

I survived... But barely. I don't regret my decision to read this series...yet. Sometimes I feel Like I've been lied to and this is actually a Shojo series. But then they do something and it reminds me that, yes this is actually shonen LOL

Ughhh Okay, time to go to volume 13. Everything will be FINE.

Me encanta.

Oh I love them I LOVE THEM SO MUCH 😭💖

I was giddy seeing Sakura and the gang getting trained to fight with the senpais but then Umemiya’s backstory was shoved down my throat and my heart breaks. I had not expecting Ume to have such a dark past 💔 It also explained how he often said eating with others made the food taste better and how he treated everyone like his own brother/family 🥺💗 my boi is so precious (Hiragi’s younger self making an appearance was so funny I’m glad he supported Ume’s ambitions)

I like that Ume decided to open up to Sakura about his past, making sure he’s more prepared to fight Endo. They seemed to get a lot closer after the talk (the scene of the gut ‘touching’ was shocking while also feeling intimate at the same time), and I believe Sakura is getting better and better at expressing his feelings too. I love him and them so much 💞🥺

First of all, I'm not the type who read manga. I always wait patiently for the new season of anime to come out. But for Wind Breaker, I can’t. After binge-watching season 1 and 2 in one week, I just wanna jump myself reading manga because I need to meet Furin guys, especially Sakura as soon as possible.

Then, in the volume 12: CRYINGGGG UMEMIYAAAAA SCREAMINGG SAKURAAA!!!

“Sakura’s been caught up in way too many problems, Man. Is he emitti’ some kinda aura that attracts trouble?”
“He’s not attracting trouble. He’s jumping head-first into trouble himself.”
“Even if he only sees someone in need, far away … he will book it to them to help. And I think that’s why he gets himself involved in a lot of troubles. Which means, Sakura’s just an overall great guy!”

I’m glad that Furin guys really trust Sakura and rely on him as the leader of the first year class. The aura of ready-to-fight Endo is going to burn hell!! Go Sakura, Go Furin!

And, Umemiya's childhood story … I’m so crying in the middle of the night. The way of Umemiya holds the spirit and ambition to keep and protect Furin and the town peacefully. Umemiya really likes eating together because this is the Umemiya’s family way. I’m bawling.

“If you spend time with the people you care about. Your heart will fill up. And when your heart is full, food tastes better. And this isn’t only limited to eating with mom and dad. And if your food tastes good. Then you can work up the strength to overcome your difficulties!”

Giving hug to Umemiya *huggggg*

My favorite moment in this volume was when Umemiya asked Hiragi to join his team. To protect the town. Then I really knew that Hiragi didn’t like Umemiya in the first place—maybe lit bit but too shy to admit, hihi.

“It’s because you hate me that I want you by my side. What I’m about to do is going to end up dragging a lot of people into this. Even though it’s just something I selfishly want to do. And if I ever make any stupid irresponsible decisions, then with someone of your strength and logical thinking by my side, you won’t think twice and beat me back onto the right path!”

Next to volume 13, ngeeengg~~

And there we have it, a little training arc with the upperclassmen. And once again I'm impressed with how sakura growth with each chapter, the way he sees things now were from his experience through the series and I'm soooo proud of him. He's getting everyone so fired up ! even kaji made the first move
Ugghh the pressure is tooo much for me (even tho I'm not the one who's gonna fight)

Ones again the saying, Those with the brightest smile has the darkest past, comes true.. Umemiya deserves lotsss of happiness!! He treats everyone as his family because he lost his. I'm so glad Umemiya turned out to be who he is today Hes a fine man now.
PLS NOT ME CRYING WHEN I REALIZED THAT’S WHY HE LOVES TO EAT With HIS FRIENDS SO MUCH. HE’S FILLING UP HIS HEART BUCKET I AM CRYING!! & Seriously Umemiya I've never seen any selfishness that is as selfless as this.

Nire-kun and Suo-san are proud of their Grade Cap! Hell yeah! The fight is about to begin ah nervous nervous.

This volume was a literal sucker punch to the gut. It left me breathless. I cried several times while reading it. The emotions were just so intense 🥺

First and foremost, I was not prepared for this volume to be about Umemiya’s past. The cover had me thinking that it was some other kid Ume was comforting…when it’s in fact himself 😭🔫 The absolute joy and care with which he’s looking at his past self is all the more heart breaking when you realize what Umemiya went through as a kid.

My heart was absolutely torn to shreds reading about how Ume’s parents died right before his very eyes, therefore leading to him living in foster care, and this trauma resulting in such deep emotional despair. The way baby Ume was so sure the death of his parents was all his fault had me feeling like someone was literally stabbing me in the chest. The moment he was finally able to express his grief because he realized his parents loved him even in their final moments was…absolutely devastating. I wanted to sob right there with him 😭

If my agony wasn’t enough, I literally cried as I read out loud to one of my friends some of the quotes by his parents. It’s so clear now why Ume’s values are what they are. He’s literally living up to what his parents taught him as a child. It’s why community and sharing food is so important to him. His parent’s words were so heartwarming, but it’s precisely what made me cry even harder. They wanted him to know that sharing love and happiness wasn’t just with blood relations, but with whoever you grew to care about. They taught him that the love you share with others is nourishing, it replenishes you in times of darkness, and that’s beautiful. How was a woman not supposed to cry at that?

This volume was the perfect example of why I find Wind Breaker to be an ELITE manga series. Sure, the boys like to fight and the scenes of that can be visually engaging, but the story truly has so much HEART. The series is all about connection, community, and mutual care. The fighting is just a means to protect what’s truly important. Even though it’s emotionally devastating at times, that’s what makes this such a well-rounded story. The actions of the characters have MEANING, and I’m always going to value that.

So. Yeah. This was a stunning volume. I adored it. It made me love my baby son Umemiya all the more, and I already loved him plenty! And that’s not even touching on the fact that we get to learn all this because he’s sharing it with Sakura. He’s further cementing how similar they are to one another, and Sakura has to navigate what it feels like to have someone who understands him so viscerally.

UGH! It’s all just incredible. It’s amazing. I fucking love Wind Breaker so much it hurts 😩

suo not a drop of sweat not a single punch landed. he stays winning.
"i don't believe i only can save everyone" FINALLY

ch 92
blah blah it IS that serious we're going to pretend this is the rumbling with this declaration of war ok. have we lost our whimsy? imma be so real, sakura, despite being sad and alone has a great life. i'd love to be paid in food and all i had to was beat up bad guys.
fighting isn't the only fun thing... laughing and talking is too. (are we foreshadowing chika)
ok but let's be realistic if the cops were here we wouldn't get all these fights would we and then what... no manga

ch 93
uh oh. we're gonna get the most depressing umemiya backstory aren't we. omg he has white hair bc of his depression??

ch 94
"am i allowed to feel lonely" omg umemiya

ch 95
this happy orphanage is giving me seraph of the end flashbacks right before everyone died gruesomely
the answer to everything is... LOVE

ch 96
not hiragi getting stressed at the young age of 15 all because of umemiya lol

ch 97
icb umemiya fixed that rift bc furin is like a whole diff place now

ch 98
sakura: why tf are u trauma dumping on me
"we got so close it felt like he was touching my guts" ok pack it up PACK IT UP the umesaku fans are crawling out from under the shed and i hate it. yeah i know they're 2 years apart but thematically and ideologically this is like shipping erwin and eren or guren and yuu or gojo and megumi or dazai and atsushi - it's gross. that is ur father/older brother figure NOT a love interest. (but ofc ship whoever u want i'm just disgusted by it)
sakura gives heartwarming speech. sugishita scowls

was near tears during tsubiki's backstory. bc my beautiful transgender babygirl learning to accept herself with a kind old couple's encouragement. and then i was like well that's the most emotional i'm ever gonna get over this dumb ass manga.

then BOOM umemiya backstory.

sigh. i crode.

"if they're not mad at me...if they don't hate me...then can i miss them?"

if a ten year old kid said this to me, their foster parent, after they confessed they think they killed their parents because their parents ran out to save him from an oncoming truck in the street where they were playing and died in the process i would instantly burst into tears and then self implode. and then the kid would have more trauma woops

AND THEN HE GREW UP TO TAKE DOZENS OF YOUNGER KIDS UNDER HIS WING. BECAUSE HIS PARENTS LOVED HIM SO MUCH. BECAUSE HE LOVED HIS UNBORN LITTLE SIBLING SO MUCH. SINGLE EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD FATHER WHO WORKS TWO JOBS. WHO LOVES HIS 300 KIDS AND NEVER STOPS

well at least we now know why he never acknowledges how tsubaki's clearly in love w him. there has to be some sort of terrible self loathing preventing him from being with her beacuse she's the most gorjus awesome woman alive so there's no way he doesn't reciprocate. me personally i would throwing myself at her twenny for seven. either that or he's gay as hell but i think it's bc of the self esteem issues

WIND BREAKER, Vol. 12 ★★★★★

Trigger warnings: abandonment (implied), anxiety, bullying (mentioned), child neglect (implied), death of a parent (mentioned), emotional trauma, graphic violence, loss of loved ones, panic attacks (implied).

People say that the kindest people or people with the biggest and most beautiful smile always have the saddest and darkest history. Well, I can say that it is right for Umemiya. Nii Satoru makes my jaw drop when he reveals Umemiya's past and the tragedies that come and go for this charismatic Bofurin leader. It gives a justified and transparent backstory as to why this character holds the town very dear to him, including the students in Furin and his utopian dream of making Makochi such a peaceful and welcoming place without any life-changing incident.
