Chuck Miceli has created a different kind of paranormal novel. This well written and fast-paced story draws you in from the excitingly mysterious first chapter and holds you within its grip until its surprising conclusion.
Amanda is long gone but the effect of her death remains in the room. A team of students at Nadowa College, along with a renowned physicist, will encounter the room and its perfect environment. But is it perfect, does it have an effect on the weather, or are the unusual circumstances surrounding the room’s past and present just a coincidence of nature? Katie, a student at Nadowa, believes that the room itself, and the spirit of the child that died there, is trying to communicate, trying to warn her of dangers to come. But who is the greater danger, the living or the dead? Katie has to unravel the mystery before it is too late.
Chuck Miceli makes this book even more fascinating to the reader by providing interesting weather tidbits at the beginning of each chapter. The book is such a page turner that I must admit to having to return back to these tidbits after reading the chapters. Amanda’s Room is a must read for paranormal lovers. Don’t miss this one.
I read this book on a friend's recommendation. I gave the author 2 stars for actually writing a book. Congratulations, on that. However, I found the book full of mistakes that newbie authors make: 1. One research error - MIT is not an Ivy League school! 2. Paragraphs that run together, so you can't figure out who's talking. 3. "Talking head" syndrome-it's okay to have more than one point of view, but not every other sentence, or in the same paragraph! 4. Characters were hard to get to know, their thoughts and dialogue were stilted and unnatural. I could not connect with them. 5. Characters tended to repeat each other's names every time they spoke. We don't do this in real life, don't do it in your dialogue.
I wish this author success, and if he is writing another book, please see above, and engage a good editor!! It will be worth it.
I received this book from the author through LoP in exchange for an honest review.
Amanda's Room follows a small group of people studying a bedroom that has a supernaturally perfect environment. The group becomes embroiled in a mystery as they try to find a scientific reason behind the strange qualities that this room has. Each step that they take to figuring out how and why Amanda's room is connected to the weather is one step closer to shattering their lives.
Each chapter begins with a meteorology quote that gives us an idea of how the chapter will go. I think that these quotes are a nice touch because they set the tone throughout the book. I found the early chapters a little hard to get through. Some of the character building was a bit choppy and packed together. I think that some of the events in the early chapters would have worked better if they had occurred later. While some of the realistic aspects of the mystery are far-fetched, I thought that it was interesting enough to keep reading. I had everything but one little thing figured out so there was a nice shock at the very end. Overall, I think that it is an interesting story. However, I don't think that it's meant for anyone who does not have a moderate interest in meteorology.
I received this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review by the “Lover’s of Paranorrmal” Group on Goodreads.com Amanda’s Room is a fast paced and very entertaining read that will have you turning pages until the end. Student’s from Nadowa College, along with a renowned Physicist investigate an old, abandoned and decaying Mansion. Inside they find one room that remains in a perfect state. The same room in which a little girl by the name of Amanda Reynolds died in. Katie discovers that the room also affects the weather for miles around, the team delves into the house's history, only to have each of them targeted for disaster. Through it all, Katie believes that the spirit of Amanda Reynolds still inhabits the room and is using the weather in a desperate attempt to communicate something, but Katie can't decipher what or why. The story is well crafted and very well written. I especially liked the way each chapter started with a meteorological quote. The conclusion is surprising, I thought I had it all figured out but then the story changed course. I will be looking for more of this talented Author’s work.
I received this book from the author through LoP in exchange for an honest review. I listened to the audio version on Audible.
Amanda's room centers around a group of college kids and their professor. They are studying a house, particularly a bedroom that has unique supernatural aspects. It isn't long before they discover the bedroom belonged to an infant who died, and they hurry to make the connection, if any between the events. One of the students, Katie, begins to realize that the little girl who died, Amanda, may be haunting her room and causing weird weather phenomenons as a means of communication.
I liked this book a lot. This was a unique book, and anyone who knows me knows that I love finding a book that I can say "I haven't read a book like this before"! The story was very well written as were the characters.
And, living in an area where hurricanes and tornadoes are not uncommon, I enjoyed the weather aspect of the book.
I recommend this to anyone who loves a good paranormal read, especially if you like weather stories as well!
Fun read, and my timing was great since it ends with a hurricane on the east coast and we are still cleaning up from Sandy. The book is good but there are a few areas that could be better. Conversations are sometimes clumped together in a single paragraph so that it is confusing who is saying what. There are quite a few typos, I noticed more toward the end of the book, so maybe I was paying closer attention as the excitement built up. Parts of the ending can be foreseen, but the main premise is a bit far fetched and leaves room for anything to happen in the end. All in all, it has likable characters, a decent plot and is exciting. Not really believable and not likely to be one that you want to read again, but interesting and good to see from a new author just making his mark.
There is a book review quote on the back of this book “…couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I hated for it to end.” Well I read the book in just two sittings and I was eagerly awaiting each twist and turn. So I guess that I can second that book review! I have to tell you that this book is like no other horror book that I have ever read. Well, I thought that it was a horror book when I started, but it has many different aspects to it. It has the suspense of a murder mystery, the emotion of a romance novel, the technology of a techno-thriller and the science of a sci-fi adventure. The story is easy to read and follow even with all of these elements working within its pages, and I look forward to more works from this new author.
First of all, Chuck is a Connecticut writer, and I am happy to support him. This is a fast-paced para-normal-science-fiction type book. Being a weather geek myself, I was happy that all of the chapters began with information about types of weather. The main characters are all weather geeks! This is a story of a dead infant, an abandoned house, a group of college kids and a weather professor. The twists and turns in the plot are much fun to ride, but there are a few spots which go unexplained. So how were those weather patterns created? Alas, I can forgive Chuck! The page turner is fun, and even though the ending is a bit too tidy, I would recommend this book.
This was a really good book, it was sitting on my Kindle for 5 years before I finally read it, the story was like nothing I ever read before, the weather information at the start of each chapter, added interest to the book, I'm so glad I read it now.
I picked up this hardcover book at a sale. It took me so long to get into it, that I thought I was just going to quit which is very rare. It did start to capture my interest. All the info on weather was not my thing, but definitely an unusual novel.
A clever mix of science, mystery humanity. Clever, interesting, mysterious and full of surprises while touching upon humanity, morals and the search for belonging.
The description of the story caught my attention and I wanted to read it. The beginning of the book intrigued with the secret of Amanda's room and I was curious to find out what it was.
At first I read book slowly. It took some time to get in to the story. It seemed as if it lacked something to make me interested to the characters introduced, to feel conected to them. I'm not sure what it was. Maybe it was told in a little bit too straightforward way, maybe it seemed lacking of emotion or depth. But later on I felt I was getting more and more interested in the story as more details, secrets and questions came. There was also told more about the stories of the main characters and I felt I was touched by it. Characters became more real to me. I was beginning to know them more, started to care for them and was eager to know what would happen to them next. It was interesting to delve along with them to the story and secrets of Amanda's room, to try to figure out what's behind all that. Chapter after chapter situation got more complicated, events got bigger and more crucial. As the story went forward it kept getting more and more intense and I was hurrying through the pages eager to know what's next.
It was interesting to read a story about the weather. That was new to me. Seems it's casual everyday topic. People everyday want to know what the weather would be like. Whenever we don't know what to talk about, we talk about the weather. It's constant part of our lives. And yet I found out I know not that much about it. It was quite shocking to read about the tornado. I haven't encountered any of them in my life, just read about it or have seen on TV. Reading about it happening made me see there are a lot of differences of the weather in the world and what I haven't given it a thought before. It made me see a little bit more how it would be like to experience it. It made me feel it with the character and not just know about it. I liked quotes about the weather too. They gave me deeper knowledge about the weather and also added some interest to try to find out how they were connected to the story.
It was a great story. It was intriguing, interesting, intense, touching, giving some thoughts. It had fun moments too. I wouldn't have guessed there's so much to know about the weather and what the story about it could be so interesting to read.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal).
I received a copy of this book from goodreads in exchanged for an honest review. This book evolves around a group of college students and their professor as they study weather patterns from a room in a long abandoned house. They come to suspect that a young girl who died in the room they are using as their headquarters may still be manipulating the weather. I am a self-proclaimed weather buff, so I really enjoyed the weather aspect of this story. The "spooky" aspect of this story keep you guessing though you may have a reasonably good chance of putting the pieces together (most of them) by the end. I thought the author did a nice job of putting twists throughout, but I thought the story probably could have been condensed just a tad. It was about 625 pages on my edition. I felt a few times that some characters were introduced and then disappeared for too long. I also would have liked to have seen the professor's wife play a larger role. While I do appreciate that the author obviously took a lot of time researching weather for this book, I had a hard time getting around the premise that a girl from tornado alley, bent on researching advance weather alert systems, would opt to go to NY to study weather. I understand the author was probably more comfortable writing about a region he was more familiar with, but the subject matter kind of screamed for her to take off for University of Oklahoma or University of Georgia or some other school renowned for its meteorological prowess. Just an observation. Additionally, there were a couple of things that didn't make a lot of sense geographically that I questioned that were of a smaller nature but some readers may catch. All in all, it was an entertaining book. I would probably not recommend for kids because of harsh language, but its not excessive.
Fun, brisk adventure When infant Amanda died, her parents abandoned their luxurious home, leaving the room untouched. 18 years later, a small group of clever students stumble upon a anomaly - the atmosphere in Amanda's bedroom is stable and unaffected by outside weather conditions - they convince their brilliant professor to study the incident. Little do they know that they are about to witness the unleashing of a supernatural force - and they may not survive to tell the tale.Author Chuck Miceli crafts a tightly plotted, swift moving thriller, using an unusual (and terrifyingly effective) weapon: the weather. A fishing trip turns deadly when a water spout suddenly appears, a clear road suddenly becomes icy, a courthouse is literally attacked by cyclone - all these frighteningly familiar scenarios become tools in the hand of a supernatural power. True story: I've had nightmares since reading this book about the water spout. But weather is only one part of what's going on: there is the mystery of Amanda's parents, one of the students is accused of murder, and another is presumed dead - but may not be. And Miceli adds lots of fun details about weather tracking and patterns and keeps you guessing about who will survive. Throughout it all is the question: is Amanda trying to communicate? Or is she trying to kill? This is a fun, brisk adventure, with a mystery at it's core, and anyone who enjoys old fashioned horror/thrillers is sure to enjoy this one.Note for younger readers: some strong language, gruesome killings, some sensuality, and one brief bedroom scene.Disclaimer: This review was part of a book exchange for reviews.
In the spirit of full disclosure, the author is a friend. But I was happy to not only read, but leave my thoughts on this, his first book. Mr. Miceli is as passionate about the weather as he is about his book and that is evident throughout this novel. From the moment it begins, the story tugs you along with it and it is difficult to put it down.
All the characters in Amanda's Room appear to be well-thought out and believable and I found it easy to be sympathetic towards them. His chapters start out with a meteorological fact, which, honestly, were sometimes a little too "scientific" for me, but it often added an interesting element to the story. It made me very aware of the weather around me as I was reading this book.
The plot is fast paced and the writing is strong and consistent. The mystery weaves itself through the years and impacts the characters in ways that compels them to push past their fears to solve it. If you have to put the book down, it won't be long before you find yourself picking it back up again. The story lingers in your mind and you won't be satisfied until you finish it!

Stars: 3.5
First off, this novel is longer than I expected. In paperback, it may be 322 pages, but for ebook it is actually 766 pages. I'll start off with the story. It is indeed one of kind, as it revolves around Amanda's ghost (w/c is a 3-month old baby) and her ability to control the weather through her painted room.
The twists and turns in the story was developed when I'm actually in the last quarter of the book and it will really keep you on your toes. The first half of the book consists of every character's life story, particularly Katie and Bert. This I think makes this novel longer than necessary. I also skipped some parts pertaining to meteorology since I think it's very technical, especially for a reader who's not into it.
I would recommend this to everyone who loves paranormal with the twist of crime and suspense. This may be a long read, but the plot and the climax are worth it.
***I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the goodreads group LoP or Lovers of Paranormal.***
This book centered on three things I love: the paranormal, mystery and the weather. Each chapter begins with a description of weather phenomena. These foreshadow what will occur in that chapter and also help to explain some of the actual weather disturbances that take place in the story. The pace of the book starts out calm and steady like a clear day, but by the end everything from tornados to hurricanes is being thrown at the characters as they come closer to solving the mystery of Amanda's room. I actually figured the mystery out about halfway through, but all the twists and turns threw me off until all was revealed in the end. I've never read a paranormal mystery like this, and I really enjoyed it.

A fast past paranormal mystery. I was hooked until the very end. Whilst I love paranormal, this wouldn't usually be something I would pick up. I am so pleased that I did.
The author's blurb gives a good description of the plot line and what to expect from the book. There were a few twists and turns along the way and I did not see the end coming.
I think that this story would translate well into film, so fingers crossed!
Miceli is a talented story teller and writer. I will be looking for more novels in the future.

At first, I though this just like other paranormal novels I've read, but boy I was wrong. Never had I ever read any kind of story like this, ever. The weird weathers, the intoxication yet calming pink room, its occupants after it has been taken in as hostel, and the mysteries surrounding it. I often found myself up until 3 am just to know what happened next! The mysteries was so complex and keep going on and on making this harder to put down. I recommend this book for weekend end reading where you can read this all day!!!
I really enjoyed this book. I am not a lover of paranormal books generally, but the description grabbed me. I thought it was very well written and I loved the quotes about the weather and the integration of weather into the story. I appreciated the authors note about reading them too, because I might have otherwise skipped some of them.
The characters were a little cliché, but the storyline was pretty fast paced and interesting and made it very difficult to put the book down even when I really needed to sleep!

'Amanda's Room' is one of those books that grabbed me and held me throughout. I could not put it down. The storyline was awesome. The way it played out was very thrilling. Quite a few surprises caught me off guard. The characters were great. Each one kinda had a story of their own. very good read. The story was well thought out and well written. A must add to your tbr list. Recommended.
Amanda's Room kept me on the edge of my seat and took several unexpected twists that made me unable to put it down. The book is suspenseful and very well done. I can't wait to read the next literary delight Chuck Miceli has up his sleeves.
It took me an extremely long time to finish this book. The writing was not great. But my biggest complaint was how the author sexualized the young women. There was barely any descriptions about the male characters, but he was all over females. It just left me feeling very uncomfortable.
