Tips for Using Your Slow Cooker

Rate this book
From the Fix-It and Forget-It slow-cooker experts, and the thousands of followers of the Fix-It and Forget-It.com blog and Facebook page, comes a book chock-full of tips for using your slow cooker. This is the book to turn to, whatever your slow-cooker question or dilemma. For example—   Do I really have to brown the meat before putting it into the slow cooker, even if the recipe tells me to do that?   Can I cook a dish in half the time on High if the recipe tells me to cook it on Low?   How can I convert a stove-top or oven recipe so it can be cooked in a slow cooker?   How do I keep chicken breasts from overcooking in a slow cooker?   I don't have a baking insert. How do I "bake" a cake without one in my slow cooker?   How can I get meat loaf or lasagna out of the slow cooker without breaking it and ruining its appearance?           The collection includes real-life tested tips, plus stories of slowcooker successes and disasters, unusual discoveries, and slow cookers' role in special occasions. A handy resource for new and experienced cooks, from those who love their slow cookers and have learned by doing.

Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Good Books and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of cookbooks, including books on juicing, grilling, baking, frying, home brewing and winemaking, slow cookers, and cast iron cooking. We’ve been successful with books on gluten-free cooking, vegetarian and vegan cooking, paleo, raw foods, and more. Our list includes French cooking, Swedish cooking, Austrian and German cooking, Cajun cooking, as well as books on jerky, canning and preserving, peanut butter, meatballs, oil and vinegar, bone broth, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Tips for Using Your Slow Cooker, rather than being a cookbook, is rather Hints from Heloise on slow cookers. I should have known better from the title, but it never occurred to me that someone would compile a 176-page slow-cooker book without including some recipes. I found myself first scanning, then abandoning the book.

If you're brand new to slow cookers, it's worth a glance, although just barely; otherwise, opt for a real cookbook like Fix-it and Forget-it Cookbook, Cooking Light Slow-Cooker Tonight!: 140 delicious weeknight recipes that practically cook themselves, or one of the many other fine slow-cooker cookbooks.

Not every single tip in this book is meant for you, but I found lots that I was able to use and most of it a great deal of help.

For the new slow cooker owner or an old hand this is a great book to have.

Just as the title says...

...there are hundreds if not thousands of tips for how to use all sizes and shapes of slow cookers submitted by people all over the USA. Good tips they are, but kind of overwhelming. Thankfully they are sorted well, and there's even another index at the end sorting a different way. Don't look for any recipes in this book though or you'll be disappointed.

I had expected tips while giving recipes. Totally disappointed.

A quick read for a slow cooker novice or an experienced user. The book compiles tips from many different cooks - in the same style as the FIX IT AND FORGET books by Pellman Good. Not earth shattering stuff in this book - you can find most of the information in other slow cooker cookbooks, but it's nice to have it compiled in one place.

I chose this book because I recently purchased a 1.5 quart slow cooker and was searching for tips on converting recipes. While I found more useful tips in another book, this offered generic helpful hints. Worth looking through.
