Sadie's Montana #3

The Disappearances

Rate this book
Sadie may be married now, but she's as spirited as ever, and her life is no less tame. In fact, soon after she and Mark are settled into the farmhouse which Mark is renovating, she's visited by three FBI agents who question her about the two children who mysteriously appeared one day at the Ranch. Before the agents leave, they warn Sadie that her beloved horse, Paris, is highly valuable, and that she and Mark may be in grave danger because of Paris.           This news, on top of Mark's unexpected black moods, leaves Sadie sometimes wishing she could go home, "lay her head on Mam's shoulder, and ask why she hadn't warned her." But when Sadie is kidnapped at gunpoint by two men in ski masks, her stubborn strength is tested beyond her imagining. Mark disappears emotionally without warning. Now Sadie has disappeared, leaving Mark and her family wracked with worry. And Anna, Sadie's youngest sister, desperate for Neil Hershberger's attention, refuses to eat, plagued by an eating disorder as she fades away. And yet, Mark's younger brother Timothy appears, bringing unexpected life and hope to the family. Mercifully, healing and courage reappear in unexpected times and places in this concluding volume of the Sadie's Montana series.

THE DISAPPEARANCES is the third book in Sadie's Montana series and I suggest readers read these books in order, Wild Horses, Keeping Secrets, and then THE DISAPPEARANCES. Ms. Byler is not my favorite Amish author and I have read quite a few of her books, mainly because she is currently Amish. But while truth is stranger than fiction, I am finding it hard to find her plots even remotely believable.

The story is not purist, as in told in one point of view. Ms. Byler head-hops quite nicely, going from whoever's head she wants to be in at the moment. And it says multiple times no one ever warned her about Mark and she wished they would've -- but since I read all three books, I know she was warned multiple times about Mark and refused to listen. Of course that is normal, but it made me want to shake her and say "You were warned, honey. Many, many times."

The mystery of the wild horses begun in the first book, continued with the snipers in the second book, is continued even farther with Sadie's disappearance in THE DISAPPEARANCES. Who is behind all this horse drama and why? If you are interested in Amish stories written by a real life Amish woman (and not those written by distantly related to the Amish or neighbors of the Amish) then books by Ms. Byler should be considered. They are certainly high in drama and action.

Linda Byler is a new author for me to read!!! I was mesmerized by this book. Sadie and Mark are newly weds who have a past that turns their new marriage upside down and right side up. This is a story of Faith and unconditional love. Even though this is the 3rd book in a series I read it as a stand alone and did not seem to lose any of the story. I would recommend this to everyone who reads Amish Fiction and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Anyone who gave or is planning to give this book more than two stars needs to step back and take a seriously look at what their standards are for quality of writing, plot, and characterization. This book clearly had no editor, or one who didn't know what they were doing. 95% of the many convoluted plots are left unresolved. This was the worst of the series and was ridiculous.

The snipers and the horses and the children and all loose ends of the mystery were sloppily tied up. I don't even know what the mystery was at this point, I don't care, and I'm just glad to be done with the book.
Mark and Sadie's marriage is a dumpster fire.

Conclusion to Sadie's Montana. Everything is changing--Sadie married. Mark finds two of his brothers and Tim comes to live with them. Changes at home, changes at the ranch.

Horses, Remodeling of the House, and Love

This is book 3 of the Sadie's Mountain Trilogy. So many things in the series had loose ends and I feel like most loose ends have been tied up. I hated to see the end. I will miss the many characters I have come to love.

Sadie and Mark are still working on the house, but now they are awaiting a tiny family member. Paris the horse came home, in pitiful condition and they feared they would lose her. She had been stolen and badly treated. Her return led to a ring of criminals who stole and mistreated many other horses also.

Read this book or the complete trilogy to find out all that happened.

This turned out to be a really good series. There was a lot more going on than in the typical Amish novels, of which I have read many. There were mysteries, mental health issues, and relationship problems. The trilogy kept me interested, as I grew to care about these characters. Would recommend.

This is the conclusion to Sadie’s Montana series by Linda Byler with the mystery of the wild horses and all being brought to light. The writing was disjointed and was not realistic at times. New characters were introduced with more mental health issues addressed too.

A friend loan me with book thinking I would enjoy it since it was written by an Amish author.

Sadie loved her horse, Paris. She loved Mark, except when he seemed to pull away from her. Loved her family.
I didn't know what was happening, in the Amish community, having someone kid napped. This didn't seem right. I liked how she decided to get away.

Healing and courage reappear in unexpected times and places in this concluding volume of the "Sadie's Montana" series by Amish author, Linda Byler.

My Review:

Being married clearly didn't settle Sadie down at all - on the contrary, she just has all the more drama in her life. Her initial reluctance with Mark in the last book was for a good reason, but she married him anyways, dark passenger and all. She is now paying for it as he withdraws from her emotionally, but she endures the consequences of her actions with grace. I am still not sure Mark was the best choice for her, but you cannot help who you love.

The story progresses wonderfully, with all the loose ends in the last two books addressed. There was a solid ending, and great writing by Byler, as always, throughout. Between the vague notion that they weren't safe because of their horse, then Sadie's disappearance, an epic conclusion to the series quickly comes to an end. There was so much going on in this book with Mark and Sadie; then Neil and Anna that there no lagging or slow parts! I enjoyed this series very much, and look forward to seeing what else Byler puts out in the future!

When I started reading this final book, I was a little disappointed with the way it was written. It is a little too fast paced and I was afraid Linda Byler took one of the biggest mysteries and just closed it in the first few chapters. But I kept reading, and I am SO happy I did. As usual Linda shocked and surprised me with this plot just like the last two. I then decided for this review to make a pros and cons list, but then I realized that the pros out weighed the cons too mush. So let me just tell you that if you have read or are interested in the first two books do not hesitate to buy and read this last book. It ends wonderfully, wrapping loose ends, and with the promise of hope! You can't help but fall in love with the tight nit community and the many characters tie in through out! A good end with just as much surprise as the first two in the series. I highly recommend the whole series. There are issues with the editing, but that has more to do with the publishing and not the actual writing. Linda Byler's writing is always SO good and clear; the book gets better as you read on!

I have two songs again for this book is: "The Glory Of Love" by Bette Midler and "Standing On The Promises" by Alan Jackson

Book is 3 in series and supposed to be about Old Order Amish. I found the following to be outside the realm of what I've learned over time the Old Order Amish (the most strict of the sect):

a RED Christmas shirt
The woman cooking on Sunday -- frying chicken, making & cooking meat loaf...

Another entry about pumpkin pie -- that it was complicated to make. No mention is made that the pumpkins were harvested, then cooked, pureed, etc. That's the ONLY way it could be made complicated. Otherwise, it's one of the EASIEST pies to make.

I had read book 1 and didn't realize I was on book 3 (I find I can easily do that when reading a book on Kindle). I didn't find this book to pull me into Sadie's life. It was okay. Not a bad read but I doubt I'll go back and read book 2.

Written in Amish style, the ramblings of Sadie and her family show a real life look at marriage. Things aren't all easy and fixable.
The author presented a refreshing change to the current books of all love and live happily ever after once marriage comes.
Although book 3 in the series, and I had only read the first (a long time ago), this book could stand on its on. It provided enough flashbacks to allow explanation, without making it tedious for the history lesson.
I did skimmed over the many details of all the dinner spread, and other lengthy descriptions.
At times there were bouncing from point of views and I had to back track to see who this scene presented. This effected the smoothness of the read.
Overall I appreciated the realistic view that marriage is work and must be entered with that in mind.

Apart from some proofreading errors, this was a great read. I especially enjoyed the author's commitment to showing that even the best of marriages have trying times. One needs to be an adult and work through those times rather than giving up. Leaning on Christ is helpful too. This is not your typical romance and I appreciate the further insight into the Amish community. I know they are all different.
