An independent young woman shouldering a heavy burden...
Ever since her parents died in a tragic train wreck, Sofia Rogers has worked a job, managed a household, and brought up her little brother, Andy--all on her own, because she prizes her independence. But that's not to say it's been an easy road. As if she didn't have enough burdens to bear, through circumstances beyond her control, Sofie gets pregnant--and becomes an overnight pariah. Worse than the whispers and stares of others is the bewilderment she feels, knowing she may not be able to provide for her baby.
An ambitious young doctor with lofty aspirations...
Dr. Elijah Trent moved to Wabash to take over the medical practice of his grandfather, "Doc" Trent, as he is affectionately called by the locals. Moved by a sense of compassion, Eli maintains a hectic schedule, striving to meet all his patients' needs. Just when he feels as if he's bitten off a bit more than he can chew, he meets Sofie Rogers--and his world is turned upside down by this enchanting, yet perplexing young woman, who rejects any apparent acts of charity.
A troubling secret that demands discovery...
Even more frustrating, Sofie refuses to participate in an investigation that might bring her attacker to justice and thereby restore her reputation. Never one to mind his own business, Eli gets involved, anyway--and a world of troubles ensues, from arson to death threats. Nevertheless, Eli is determined to break down the wall of silence behind which Sofie hides her deep, dark secret, and to make her realize that trusting him--and her heavenly Father--is the only thing that makes sense.
After 31 years of teaching second and fourth grades, Shar decided to say, "Bye-bye, Students!" and "Hello, Writing World!" and it's been an interesting, exciting, challenging, and inspiring adventure. One thing she knows for certain—God dropped a seed of passion for writing in her heart back in the summer of 2000, and He's been growing it ever since. She signed on with Whitaker House Publishers in early 2006 and in December of that same year released Through Every Storm, a general fiction title that finaled in the American Christian Fiction Writers Book-of-the-Year. Another general fiction title, Long Journey Home, hit shelves in 2008. (It is her pleasure to announce that both of these titles are also available in SPANISH.)
Sharlene’s beloved, bestselling “Little Hickman Creek Series” released in 2007-08. This 3-book series set in 1895 KENTUCKY won the “Road to Romance” Reviewers’ Choice Award and a third place standing in the Inspirational Readers’ Choice Contest in 2008 and 2009. Also, in 2009, her historical series, “The Daughters of Jacob Kane”, began hitting bookshelves in stores countrywide. In late summer of 2010, Tender Vow, another general fiction stand-alone, will release, and following that, a 1920s 3-book set called “River of Hope”. The first in that series, River Song, should become available in the spring of 2011. Yep, you guessed it – Shar is BUSY!!!
Shar has done numerous book-signings across the country, appeared on many national television and radio shows, and participated in countless interviews. She has been married to the love of her life since December of 1975, has two wonderful daughters and two handsome sons-in-law. The joys of her life, however, are her adorable grandchildren. Besides her involvement in music at her local church, Shar has been a speaker for the local MOPS organization, is involved in KIDS’ HOPE, USA, a mentoring program for at-risk children, counsels young women in the international APPLES OF GOLD program, and attends two bi-weekly Bible studies. She and her darling husband, Cecil, live in Spring Lake, Michigan with Peyton, their loveable collie, and Mocha, their big, lazy cat.

MY REVIEW:
Sofia's Secret is Book Three in the River of Hope Series by Sharlene MacLaren. Sofia takes care of her younger brother, Andy, in their home at the edge of town. Their parents were killed in a train accident six years earlier, when her brother was five. Sofia works nights cleaning offices. She is expecting a child and has not been attended by a doctor until she comes down with a fever and is hospitalized. Sofia and Andy have been watched out for by a neighboring couple and an older woman who has been like a mother figure to them. Now the retiring doctor who brought both of them into the world, and his grandson, a young doctor who has come to take over his practice, care for both of them as they reach out to lighten their daily load with kindness. This is a story of hope as darkness tries to keep hidden and is exposed into the light. Sofia is delightful in her struggle to keep one foot in front of the other and continue on. She has her hands full, but so is her heart. Full of love. Is the price of her silence too great? In yielding, there is One who is her Protector and able to carry her heavy burden because He has paid the price.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ―Psalm 27:1
This is the third and final book in this series and another great read. If you haven't read the first two books you can read this one without being lost. This book focus's on Sofia who pregnant and unwed. She has a secret and lives in fear that the truth will get out and endanger those she cares for. She is also working to care for her younger brother after a tragedy took the lives of their parents. Sofia is very independent and doesn't like relying on others. Eli is the new dr in town taking over from his grandfather and is taken with Sofia and wants to know her secret and help her. This is where things get interesting with threats against the dr and her brother. Sofia wants to distance herself and the Dr wants to help. I do love how the story plays out and found I really loved Sofia and felt for her. The book deals with bullying and how it can affect a person. It also deals with God's unconditional love and grace. Very good book and series
Wonderful book. The "River of Hope" series is one of the best threesome of my summer reading. They will definitely make my "read a second time" list in the future!
Sharlene MacLaren in her new book, “Sofia’s Secret” Book Three in the River Of Hope series published by Whitaker House takes us into the life of Sofia Rogers.

Honestly I didn’t know what to expect when I sat down to read “Sofia’s Secret”. I guess I thought it was just going to be a typical romance drama. Well was I wrong! ” Who knew so much could happen in a little town like Wabash, Indiana? Sofie is raped but she won’t tell anyone who the attacker is. When Dr. Eli gets involved the death threats and fire bombings begin. Add in that Sofie is trying to raise her younger brother by herself as their parents died in a train accident. And then on top of that there is the romance–not just any kind of romance but a real, gentle romance that only springs from God. Ms. MacLaren does an outstanding job with all the characters and it is a sad thing when we get to the end of the book and we have to say goodbye to them. Doubly sad because this is the last book in this series. However the good news is there is sure to be more from the pen of this outstanding author, Sharlene MacLaren.

SOFIA’S SECRET by Sharlene MacLaren–book three in the River of Hope Series–was a very enjoyable read that I was able to finish in one sitting.
Sofia Roger’s can barely keep her head above water. After the death of her parents, she has struggled to take care of Andy her brother, maintain a home, and work nights in order to keep food on her table. When the unspeakable happens and she finds herself pregnant, not only is Sofia at her wits end on how she will provide for a baby, but she also becomes the victim of town gossip. Sofia is unable to set the record straight in town because she fears her life and that of her brother’s is in danger from the person who attacked her. With her head up, shear guts, and determination she sets out to prove that she doesn’t need anyone’s help, especially that of the new doctor in town.
Dr. Elijah Trent is all set to take over his grandfather’s private practice. When Andy wakes him and his grandfather in the middle of the night because Sophia has collapsed at home, Eli gets his first glimpse at the determined woman who insists on making her way in the world without the interference of others. At first, Eli doesn’t know what to make of the young woman, and why she won’t talk about the baby’s father. When he finally put together the pieces of the puzzle, he tries to convince Sofia to go to the police but she won’t budge. Knowing he feels something more for Sofia than a doctor-patient relationship, Eli does his best to break down the walls Sofia has built around her.
SOFIA’S SECRET was a well paced novel with rich characters, good subplots, and the underlying story of God’s faithfulness, even when we are faithless. Sofia is the epitome of spunk and self-sufficiency, while Eli is determined and protective. The reader pretty much knows from the beginning where the story is going, but the ride to get there is no less enjoyable.
Sharlene MacLaren’s third book in her River of Hope series, Sofia’s Secret, is a story full of mixed emotions and one that explores that, no matter what one goes through in life, God is gracious who always forgives, no matter what. Sofia Rogers shoulders the heavy burden of raising her brother and working just too make ends meet, since their parents died in a tragic train accident. However on top of all this, Sophia carries the burden of the town’s gossips and stares of bewilderment for she finds herself unmarried and pregnant. Sofia has therefore separated herself from Wabash, only trusting a few people. However when Dr. Elijah Trent arrives in town, with intentions of taking over his grandfather’s practice, he is quite taken with Sofia and willingly helps her, no matter the cost. However Sofia’s independent streak keeps him at bay, knowing it’s for the better. But the more stubborn she is, the more Elijah wants to help, burrowing only more trouble.
What I love about these characters are their personalities. Sofia represents most women who nowadays strive to keep their independence. She is also kind and looks out for others, meeting their needs before her own. Elijah is the type of man any woman would fall for and it is therefore no wonder that Sofia falls for this kind, compassionate and humble man full of integrity, putting himself at risk, no matter the consequences. Another aspect I loved was the message Sharlene conveyed. In this world, it is common for young women to fall pregnant unwed, and depending on the circumstances, suffer the consequences. This novel does a good job at displaying God’s unconditional love and grace, reminding us all that God still loves them and that we should therefore not judge them, like it was done to Sofia. http://booklovers1.wordpress.com
MacLaren’s River of Hope fictional series is set in Wabash, Indiana. Each book stands alone, although some familiar characters tie them together. This final book is set in the year 1930. Sofia Rogers has brought up her younger brother Andy since their parents were killed in a train wreck. But now she carries a baby conceived without her consent and she faces threats to her brother and herself if she seeks help from the authorities.
Dr. Elijah Trent has moved to Wabash to take over his grandfather’s medical practice and finds himself involved in Sofia’s life when she becomes ill. As she fights to maintain her independence and refuses to cooperate in bringing her attacker to justice, he can no longer stand by and remain quiet. He reports his suspicions to the authorities, which brings danger to both of them and trouble to the community when the assailant retaliates.
Through her many difficulties, Sofia returns to the faith of her youth and trusts her Heavenly Father for the outcome. And Elijah patiently seeks God’s counsel in wooing and protecting her. MacLaren brings the narrative to an interesting but predictable end, which I’ll leave you to discover.
I enjoyed the well written drama and love story, but due to the mature theme and some violence, I would not recommend this book for young teens.
I really, really loved this story Sofia’s Secret. It’s full of mystery, intrigue, romance, fear, just all of the good stuff. Sofia is carrying such a heavy burden and she needs someone whom she can trust and whom will help her, but she doesn’t ask anyone for help or comfort. She and her young brother live together and Sofia is pregnant. She has a cleaning job and works at night so she can take care of her brother during the day, but she doesn’t have a car or anyway to get around except for a broken down bicycle. Sofia never complains, but is always working or helping others. A new doctor comes to town and they meet when Sofia gets sick. He tries to help her, but she wants to be left alone as she always has been to take care of herself and her brother. This book had me on the edge of my seat and reading as fast as possible. Hated when I came to the end. Sofia’s Secret is a book that really tells you what forgiveness is all about. Also it is about judging others before we know the whole story. I promise if you get this book you will be well pleased. I highly recommend it as a book to keep and read over and over.

This is the third book in this series, and I've enjoyed my return visit with these sweet people. Although it would be great to read all of the books, and I recommend that you do, it is not necessary to in order to enjoy this one. I enjoyed this journey with Sofia and her brother Andy, and of course, Dr Eli Trent. Loved how Sofia reacted and tried to keep her head up, especially with the gossip that followed her. She is pregnant, and won't tell anyone what or how it happened. She is trying to protect her brother, who has been in her care since their parents were killed in a train accident. Enjoy how the faith of these people bring joy to desperate situations. We travel along through floods, acts of violence, and mental instability. You hope things will turn out ok, but in the back of your mind you wonder the whole time. The book is a fast page turning read...once you start you can't stop!!
I received this book through First Wild Card Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.
This story was not what I expected. It was better! Not having read the previous books in this series, I was afraid I might be lost and not know what was going on, but that was not the case. I thought I would casually read a few pages/chapters over the course of several days (it's a hefty sized book at 432 pages) but I was so taken by surprise at the depth and subject matter, that I read it in less than two days.
The characters' spiritual battles are real, their decisions weighty and costly, and the humor that is interspersed in just the right places is tremendously enjoyable. Sharlene is a master story teller and this one is big!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes being thoroughly immersed in a meaty story but be prepared to let the laundry pile up and dishes go unwashed because if you're not already a fan of Sharlene MacLaren, you will be!
Whitaker House graciously supplied my review copy. I was not required to write a positive review, just my honest opinion of the book, which I have done.
Sofia Rogers has endured much hardship in her life. She raises her younger brother and shies away from people in town. Due to what happened to her she doesn't trust men or others. Her life is one of fear even after Dr. Eli Trent comes on the scene. Eli wants to protect her and her brother, Andy. A series of events, near disasters, etc. and then the sheriff is killed. Sofia's secret is then revealed and she is amazed at how the town people respond to her. They rally around her and help her. Dr. Eli Trent backs off to get to know Sofia better. She then thinks he has lost interest. Loved his romantic proposal. A story of God's grace, forgiveness and protection. God's plan revealed to Eli. Uplifting and reward in one's walk with God.
Sofia is a strong woman who is keeping the identity of her rapist secret to protect her family. I liked the way the author handled the situation, the characters and town were wonderful.
Sofia does what so many do and that is to try to handle things herself, once she learns to let others help things get easier for her. I liked the book a lot and plan to read others by MacLaren. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I received a copy of this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Set in 1930, the stigma of her pregnancy keeps Sofia Rogers quiet as much as the threats from her attacker. When handsome young doctor Eli Trent shows up and starts poking around, Sofia works harder to keep her secret and protect her young brother. An unlikely romance threaded through with a mystery, this story is engaging and entertaining. Highly recommended for older high school and above due to the subject matter - which is very well handled.
I have never been disappointed by any story written by Sharlene MacLaren. Her sweet, old-fashioned tale makes me long for a simpler time and a slower pace. Thank you, Ms. MacLaren for many hours of the simple pleasure of reading a really good story!
Sofia's Secret is another great read from MacLaren. The life application was intimate for me-surrendering control to God. Life changing stuff, not fluff. Loved it!
