1812. As the mightiest army in the world is pitilessly ground into dust by the Russian winter, two soldiers, lost in a blizzard, are given a package by a dying general. Suddenly the young soldiers find themselves hunted by relentless, blood-eyed monsters out of their worst childhood nightmares. For those tales of terror and legend told across the Earth all have a kernel of truth: humans are not alone. And these monsters, now stuck in a world whose magic has drained away, will do anything to go home. Pity the humans caught in their path. Collects the first 10 chapters of the hit online supernatural thriller VALENTINE, by ALEX DE CAMPI and CHRISTINE LARSEN, with an exclusive, print-only 42-page bonus story drawn by CASSANDRA JAMES.
Alex de Campi is a New York-based writer with an extensive backlist of critically-acclaimed graphic novels including Eisner-nominated heist noir Bad Girls (Simon & Schuster) and Twisted Romance (Image Comics). Her most recent book was her debut prose novel The Scottish Boy (Unbound). She lives with her daughter, their cat, and a Deafblind pit bull named Tango.
More of a 2.5. Germ of a great idea, but done without depths instead feeling like a constant onslaught of exposition. Valentine is an uninteresting character whose actions we aren’t really given the context to understand. Read this because I liked DeCampi and Larsen’s later work and I’m glad they both developed from this level.
If found out about this book from the author when two of my kids and myself met her at Phoenix ComiCon. We picked up a copy of the book without knowing much about it. After reading it, impressed with the beginnings of a story.
Sometimes I don't like books that are deliberately setup to be a series. There are times when I think this would be good as a stand along. Other times books need time to be fleshed out and this is one of them.
Here we see the start of Valentine and a journey that takes him across time and places. It has the standard plot lines of different people trying to get a mythical object, one being good, and one being evil. In the middle, a hero who does not know what is going on and needs to make a decision.
What I liked with this is that it takes a common plot and then resolves it quickly. This allows us to see the rewards the others were looking for, but we see how a regular person sees it. Then Valentine decides to go back to save the person who saved him, his whisked to the present.
The story just ends as it is a collection of the first 10 issues of a project. It is a great way to get into the story and sets the situation up. At the end you want to continue with it. The downside is currently I can't find where to continue the story.
This is one of the downsides of books setup to be part of a series. If it is not continued, you are left hanging. Don't let this stop you from reading it, as it is breath of fresh air. Just be in stored that you won't get to see how it continues.
1812: thousands perish in Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. Lieutenant Valentine Renaud doesn't get off so easily. I'm not convinced the art - which looks like a relic of the period when Western comics were chasing manga fans - is the best fit for the story (for me, the more epic feel of the cover seemed truer), but this is a fun take on the magical-races-among-us genre.
