Lore: The Complete Edition

Rate this book
In times past, the world was full of mythical creatures -- creatures long since banished and held at bay by the secret society of Shepherds. But when the generational line of Shepherds is broken, a reluctant hero finds her life threatened from every quarter. And the creatures are coming back...
Now, IDW presents LORE: The Complete Edition, written by T.P. Louise and acclaimed artist Ashley Wood. Primarily a prose tale, Wood provides panel and spot illustrations that help bring this story to life. LORE: The Complete Edition collects the entire six issues of this unique and mystical series, along with a gallery of artwork from Wood.

Artsy-fartsy pompous bull.

Some beautiful illustrations from Ashley Wood that can't justify buying this boring piece of junk.

I'm sad to say this was quite a disappointment. It started off promising, and I loved most the artwork which had lots of different techniques and sometimes actually looked like fuzzy photographs which was so cool! But as it went on the artwork to text shifted and there was pages upon pages of text. I also really didn't like the gender dynamics, and how most women ended up being literally a type, referred to as by type name and their "ability" was specific to how it impacted men. This was a total blind pick and you never know if that risk will be a reward or not.

So I didn’t actually finish this book. It was really boring, and kind of difficult to follow. I figure that if it takes me a month, and I’m only about half way through a comic, then it’s not worth staying for. I’m not sure why it was even published in the format that it was. I’m sure something outside of the comic book format would have been better for the reading experience.

Being miserably sick this week, I figured I'd read some comics and graphic novels to keep things easygoing. I was a bit disappointed that this turned out to be more "novel" than "graphic." Most of the story is presented in the form of a written diary with nary a doodle in sight. This is unfortunate because Wood's work, being easy on the eye as usual, might have made up (to some degree at least) for the shallow, if varied, characterization. Despite a strong premise, most of the characters lack solid motivation and the plot is haphazard. Disconcertingly, the prose contains a few vaguely hostile comments about homosexuals that don't seem to serve any discernible purpose in the story.

Very underwhelming, overall.

I don’t even know when I started it, sometime last year, but I decided this week I wouldn’t finish it.

It couldn’t keep my interest; it wasn’t as thrilling as the [very little] advertising said it would be. Blind picks are such a hit or miss and this one was a major miss.

Publishers, a little advice: stop putting this book on the shelves wrapped in plastic. You might get the right audience if they can flip through it.
