I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. It started slow but then I was pretty invested both in the who dunnit plot and the characters’ stories. It was fun to read a German book, even if I listened to it.
If you are looking for a book that will grab you from the first page and *refuse* to let you go until the very end, this is it. "The Enigma of Room 622" is an absolute masterpiece of plotting and suspense. I physically could not put it down.
The setup is brilliant: A writer (named Joël, in a clever meta-twist) is vacationing at a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps. He notices there is no Room 622. When he asks why, he discovers that an unsolved murder took place in that room years ago.
What follows is not just a simple whodunit. It's a sprawling, epic story of a powerful banking dynasty, a fatal love triangle, corporate espionage, and decades of hidden secrets.
Joël Dicker is the undisputed king of the red herring. Every single time I was *convinced* I knew the killer, he would pull the rug out from under me with a new revelation. It's exhilarating.
The story jumps flawlessly between the present-day investigation, the events leading up to the murder, and the past history of the characters. It's complex, but Dicker handles it so masterfully that you are never confused, only more hooked.
The setting of the Palace de Verbier is incredible. You can feel the cold alpine air, the oppressive luxury, and the weight of the secrets haunting the hotel.
This is a 600+ page book that reads like a 200-page thriller. You just fly through it. The final reveal is shocking, satisfying, and surprisingly emotional.
An absolute must-read. One of the best books I have read this year.
P.S. This is one of those books you'll finish at 3 AM simply because you *have* to know what happened.
