An unseen community, troublesome abilities, unforeseen captivation…
After a kidnapping in broad daylight, Detective Nate Hansen must work with the elusive Maggie Evans, a suspected criminal in his eyes. But as they follow the trail of the kidnappers, things are not as they appear — in fact, they shouldn’t be possible.
And the most troubling secret of all might just be Maggie’s…
———
Detective Nate Hansen thought he knew the shady side of the nice and touristy town of Ashport. That’s until he’s forced to work with Maggie Evans, a sometimes consultant to the police, and a thorn in Nate’s eye.
Maggie seemingly has no past, is uncannily good at interrogations, has questionable friends, dangerous enemies, and is somehow on the Chief’s good side. Through her, Nate is immersed in a supernatural world he didn’t know exists, one that will turn his life upside down. And that is nothing compared to the change Maggie herself brings to his life…
If you like kick-ass heroes, high stakes, dubious allies, hot romance, and potty-mouthed attitude, then you’ll love the Ashport Mender series.

The first 15 chapters of book 1 .... I forced through... absolutely hated the judgey biased pov character 🙄. Then angry sex out of nowhere 😒 😤... POV swapped to the girl chapter 15. Got to chapter 24, more angry 😠 sex.... I gave up. I mostly wanted to beat the male lead with a nerf bat rather than hear his judgey comments 🙄 or more smut involving him. There is no real problem with the plot or world setup from the little I read. I just DESPISE the normal cop dude.
This boxset has all four books of the Ashport Mender series, a town with a difference as those with supernatural abilities, called affiliates, live amongst the rest of the population, hiding in plain sight.
Outsider The main characters are Detective Nate Hansen and occasional consultant to the police force Maggie Evans. Nate doesn’t like Maggie at all and doesn’t like being forced to call her in for his and his partner McAllen’s latest murder case by their captain Mulligan. She had been used as an interrogation consultant since the captain’s own five year old son was kidnapped a few years ago and had worked a few other cases over the years. There is also an FBI Agent Larkin hanging around and getting himself into things and he seems especially interested in Evans. Nate believes Maggie is a criminal, pretending to be a psychic and taking money from people for it, but has no proof of this exactly! She has been called into the case he is looking at of a missing woman he saw being kidnapped, with his partner also being shot. Only problem is that the men were really there to kidnap Maggie, and unfortunately the woman she was to meet, Andrea Kirby, was taken instead. He is soon going to be poking in far too much into what she and others like her can do. Maggie is a ‘mender’ and can read people’s minds if she is looking them in the eyes, something she never does unless she has to. She is what they call an ‘affiliate’, someone with abilities. All those without a link to an affiliate through birth or marriage, are classed as outsiders. If taken in by the police, they have a vow of silence, preferring to be put in jail than have normal people know of their abilities. Then it is up to the mender to fix the situation, if they are innocent of the crime as such.
Persistence Nate is slowly introduced to a few of her secrets, but only after the Judge, Gerard, one of the Elders of her Community, tells her she can answer most of his questions. Those in the Community don’t like dealing with the police, as they can never quite understand what is happening if any of the affiliates use their abilities. Nate is slap bang in the middle of this kidnapping case and now knows Maggie was the real target. The kidnappers aren’t going to go away and are the same people who took her as a child and used her for their own devices. The FBI agent Larkin, is also after Maggie and isn’t shy in using force to try and take her, with his bosses also wanting to use Maggie for their own purposes, like they did in Seattle, before she got away. Nate and Maggie are pretty much on their own, as they try to find where Andrea is being held, but Maggie also gets called out to help with some other problem attacks on those with otherworldly abilities. Nate will soon have to stop seeing the world in terms of just black and white, or sticking rigidly to the rules and laws he is expected to follow as a police officer. There are far too many grey areas that those in the Community have to live within and they have their own ways of dealing with any wrongdoing and those responsible for it. He wants to have Maggie in his life and the two of them get hot and heavy under the covers, much to the disgust of other affiliates they meet along the way. His being a cop is still a step too far for some in her Community, for her to have done that.
Nate and Maggie are together now and have agreed to keep their working lives separate, but it means hardly seeing Maggie as she seems busier than ever as the town’s only mender. A fixer with a conscience who was there to help with any problems any of the supernatural community had. Nate’s partner, Bill McAllen, is back at work now after being shot in book one, but is still a bit below par. Maggie got called for some Community business down to the docks, but now can’t be found and isn’t answering her phone, whilst Nate gets called in to see a someone called Jordan, being held in the cells after assaulting a officer, who has a message to pass onto Maggie and eventually asks Nate to collect something to give to Maggie. Nate and Bill are soon called into investigate an apparent suicide in the police cells, but from the video, her knows it was actually murder and someone in the Community was involved. It seems that Maggie may have an insider to deal with, rather than an outsider this time round, finally realising not all of those she protects actually deserve it. The message turned out to be an item to be passed onto Maggie, but events overtake matters and it gets put aside for a while. When it gets remembered, it will cause no end of problems for the two of them, as a large group of affiliates seem to be organising for a greater purpose, just not a good one!
Dissonance Nate has made some huge changes in his work life after recent events and is now working in Ashdale, although still living mostly in Ashport. Maggie is worried he has given up his job for the police department because of her, and he has his former partner and even his father questioning his decision! His new job soon has him on a parallel investigation it seems with Maggie, and even his sister Sarah seems to be popping up as she follows a certain line of investigation regarding one of her superiors and some blackmailers. Maggie’s role as a mender has left her unable to trust the police normally, but now she has to try and trust Nate, but such a change is hard to do without thought. Secrecy from the police has been ingrained into all affiliates from childhood and is a hard thing to break. Everyone seems to know about their relationship and aren’t very welcoming of Nate, even though he has helped many of them and never broken their confidence. A hidden compound of breakaway affiliates are causing issues and when a young boy is orphaned and sent to his uncle who runs this compound, it seems to have happened very quickly and against any sort of child protection obligations to safeguard the child. Maggie will do all she can to rescue this young boy, Theo, and soon finds Nate has followed her there, after thugs target him but really wanted Maggie. He will do all he can to keep her out of the hands of the company who used her as a child, or anyone else that would force her into a role she doesn’t want. All three of them will be left running for their lives from a mix of local Community affiliates and the outside menace that seems to never give up on getting Maggie. Maggie and Nate find their relationship struggling as secrets and cross purposes get in the way, but their love is strong enough already.
Convergence This is the final book in the series and sees Maggie having to face some difficult situations. Nate is busy with his new job, but still finds himself mixed up in Maggie’s tasks as mender to the Community. He has been avoiding his best friend and former partner Detective Bill McAllen, as he seems to think Maggie has been blackmailing Nate and that was why he ended up leaving the police force that he loved. Add to that the podcaster who is questioning everyone in town about all the strange things that have happened in the town. For Maggie, it is the worry about the Yorov Company trying to take people from her Community for their abilities, aided by the Ralstons, although there aren’t quite as many of them out at their compound as there were. She also has a new member of the FBI who has replaced Agent Larkin and is a lot less likely to be dissuaded from her actions to get Maggie and take her to be used by the FBI, no matter what Maggie might want. The crew who attacked the restaurant have very strong and some with two strong abilities, led by Blakely aka the Professor, and he is key to what happened to young Theo, to get Maggie’s attention off his team!
Maggie never thought she would have a long life and certainly not have a real relationship as a mender. Now she has Nate in her life, who has made it plain he wants her in his life permanently, but she still doesn’t stay in his apartment often. Word is out that Blakey and Yorov are after those in the Community with dangerous and as they see it, useful to what they want, and now they have a list because of Blakely. Thankfully, Maggie and Nate have a partial copy of this list and Maggie has tried to warn people in the Community. Unfortunately, as she found out with Theo’s situation, she is soon going to realise that not everyone in charge in their Community can be trusted. The enemy is going after their strongest affiliates and Maggie will need Nate’s help to stop them, using his slightly different ideas to work out a plan. What she doesn’t expect is for one of the people she trusts the most, to be the one who betrays her and the rest of their Community. Nate finds himself having to trust some of the Community he previously saw as pure criminals, even having to go on a few jobs as an assistant to their illegal activities, but it was needed. Both Maggie and Nate are going to be facing some dangerous situations and Nate will have to rescue Maggie, only for her to lose him at the next turn. Danger is all around them and they will find new allies within their enemy, some of who have had enough of what Blakely is doing, but had never considered they would have any chance away from the life they have been forced to live. Lots of action at the end and you have to just cross everything and hope the right people manage to survive what happens. A fitting ending and emotions on a rollercoaster of a ride right to the last! I received an ARC copy of this boxset and I have freely given my own opinion of the books above.
Actions right from the beginning. The more you read the more you get to know about the incredibly fascinating and detailed characters which unravel more of themselves but by bit. The adversity and obstacles they encounter and eventually conquer is just like real life for some people, no matter who they are. Wonderfully written and with the whole range of emotions and feelings exquisitely described it was hard for me to take a break from reading this fantastic series. Absolutely brilliant and beautifully storyline.
I had no idea where this book was headed when I started reading. I thought it was going to be a cop novel with a bit of romance. Boy was I wrong. A whole new world of exciting and other worldly abilities made this book exciting and great fun to read. I had become jaded reading about vampires and shapeshifters, But this book introduced an entire realm of new abilities in the paranormal world that I could never have imagined. Maggie and Nate make or a powerful and loving partnership through gut wrenching adventures.
It was indeed, and most enjoyable. The main characters developed quite well as the story advanced. Some problems with grammar and such but not enough to discourage the reader. I shall investigate further books eagerly by this author.
Very well written, with quirky humor as well. Well developed characters. Quite fast moving and gripping. Picturesque descriptions that create great mental picture.
Really good read loved the characters. Although at points found the explanations a bit confusing but overall did not spoil the book. If you want to step into a world where people have special abilities, it is so worth the read.
A community of people with strange abilities clash with a straight talking cop but like all good love stories fate has a way of helping the cop and the mender find each other, with a few high jinks good old throw downs along the way, worth the read
A great series. You got to know the characters, and care about them and their relationship. This was a great find. Had to read the entire series immediately.
