Good story outline

This was a new author for me. The story outline was good but I felt too much extra description of everything, caused me to lose track of the actual story so I’d have to reread the page. Wasn’t a fan of the narration, found it very flat and probably contributed to feeling of too many words. But as I lead with, great story.

This first novel is a bit of a mess. It switches focus between the three Drakes, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. It’s a military story, but the enemies are not given any focus, and they behave exactly as expected.

The structure is a mess, too - there is the story of the Hrum battle which ends mid-book. The second half of the book seems to be setting up what will be in book 2 (but isn’t especially interesting).

The author just isn’t a very good writer. Grammatical errors, misspellings, and lots of tedious descriptions.

*Review in progress*

Nearly everything in the book intro for Hrum (Drake Chronicles #1) is either false or misrepresented in some manner! This is utterly unacceptable in my opinion.

This is an audiobook based review.

Narration is excessively droning and washed out in its delivery, which is made nought but worse by the often stilted character interactions and overall awkward drawn out prose. The narration is also sloppy with errors.

The story has a suboptimal plot with too many absurd fubar actions. The backdrop worldbuilding is delivered in straight-up 'tell' infodumps. Much of it is so improbable and stupid as to be unbelievable/immersion-breaking.

There are also several logic-continuity errors due to vague writing.

The first (convoy-ambush) space battle at the start of the book highlights this when the author mentions the casualty numbers. How to account for approximately only 2500 losses when 10+ ships were lost, aboard which 2 full planetary invasion battalions of marines, with all that entails, were vaporised with said ships and their crews!?

Are spaceships for transport and combat alike barely crewed at all!?

Or is it just that for some odd reason the MC (to that point) only accounted for sailor deaths, even though the marines and invasion logistics/supplies are mentioned!?

Well, later on we are told that the NIS Dreadnought Charlie, at full basic crew complement, numbers 10,000 souls.

Things like this keep cropping up throughout the book, making it obvious that no proper editing was done for logic/internal story consistency.

A Galactic Masterpiece

This military science fiction epic adventure has left me breathless! The Drake family's fight to protect their home from the ruthless Hrum aliens is a gripping, intergalactic ride.

Six years of relentless attacks have pushed the Drakes to the brink, but they refuse to yield. The Wrigley battlecruiser is their last stronghold, and the crew's determination is inspiring.

What shines:

1. World-building: The author masterfully crafts a vivid, immersive universe, transporting readers to the outer edges of existence.

2. Characters: The Drake family's dynamics, strengths, and vulnerabilities make them relatable and human.

3. Plot twists: Just when you think the crew has the upper hand, new challenges emerge, keeping you on the edge.

4. Themes: Exploring the nature of war, fear, and the unknown raises thought-provoking questions.

This novel seamlessly blends action, suspense, and science fiction elements, creating a captivating narrative.

A must-read for fans of military science fiction, space opera, and epic adventures.

Captivating

This exciting science fiction novel will keep you turning pages till the very last. The story is engaging and well thought out, and the writing is crisp. We are thrust into the thick of the action alongside Jaxton, Ryan, and Natalie as they fight to stop the relentless Hrum assault. It's a must read because it's a gripping and thought provoking page-turner in the genre of space opera, and because it features heroic protagonists, strange aliens, and mysteries waiting to be solved.

HRUM: A MILITARY SCIENCE FICTION THRILLER [BOOK 1 OF THE DRAKE CHRONICLES]
by Austin Davis

This is the story of the Drake family who is involved in a galactic war with the Hrum, who are brutal aliens, bent on taking over.

Quotable Quote: "...looked at Jaxton with a side-eye..." Clever wording.

Really not my cup of tea.
I don't recall reading a sci-fi book before, I think I'd best leave them alone. I must admit to fancying something a bit different. And all the reviews where good, but....it reminded me of the film "Starship troopers", but without the satire.
There where virtually no back ground information about the baddies and the main protagonists, "The Drake family", where good looking and brilliant at everything.
I'm not saying it was badly written but it just came across like a 1980's b movie.

Great book

"Hrum" is a dynamic story focusing on a family's involvement in an enduring space war. Filled with combat, action, and tension, it maintains engagement through various confrontations and adversities. While sometimes excessively descriptive and lacking in character development to fully evoke their challenges, it remains appealing to enthusiasts of military and combat-oriented science fiction.

Great sci-fi

This is what sci-fi should be. It harkens back to the greats like Andre Norton. It starts out with an epic space battle and then continues with the unknown knocking on their door. There is enough character development to make you care about the characters but not too much to lose interest.

Family Business

This family is all about serving for the betterment of humanity. They also find themselves in the wrong place at the right time. They also find characters are well developed and believable. The situations they find themselves in allow them to shine. The next steps will continue as book 2 is set up well.
Thanks for the entertaining read.

Hrum is a fast and punchy military sci‑fi that hooked me right away. I loved the mix of action and character work.
The Drake siblings are easy to root for and the battles feel big without dragging.
The pacing is quick, although sometimes a bit too quick, but overall it’s an engaging and energetic start to a series I’d happily continue to read.

Hrum is a fast-paced military sci-fi in the space opera tradition that follows the careers and personalities of three siblings in the Drake family.

I enjoyed this tangled tale, but I did feel the author rushed through the entire battle-and-rise-in-prominence of the lead characters in one book where many would have taken the same timeline over 3 or 4 books (or more). It remains to be seen if this was because the real focus of the series was on the what-happens-next to the characters.

My thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for letting me read this fun book pre-publication.
