After a harrowing journey into a new body, Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell have finally met up again in this strange new world. But the circumstances of their reunion are dire: They've just discovered that this new body has diabetes. The kidney cells grew overtaxed by having to filter too much sugar, and a terrible fate has befallen the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas... A new code black brings a slew of new complications: sleep apnea, pancreatitis, gum disease -- how can any cell keep working under these conditions?!
Well, this series has spiraled into a dystopia, for better and for worse, and it can be downright depressing at times since the body of this series is — as I imagine — a very sad individual. It’s not the easiest to see all the cells suffer as they do.
RATING: 4/5 If you like Brushing your teeth, Sleep Apnea, and Sleeping Pills you may like Cells at Work! Code Black Vol 5.
QUICK REVIEW This volume is another hit and we get more dispair and sadness from the Red Blood Cells point of view. This had a clever way of depicting insulin injections and diabetes and was very interesting (in a morbid way) to see the effects on the body. The last chapter really leaves the reader on a cliffhanger and can't wait to read the next volume. I will deduct points since we get a weird fan service here. I've mentioned in previous reviews but I feel the fan service in this series seems so out of place and don't think it adds anything. But other than that this is a must read for any fan of the Cells at Work series.
REVIEW After the cliffhanger in the last volume this one begins following that scene that is quite heartwrenching. This volume in particular was pretty clever in its way of depicting diabetes and insulin injections. It really helps to visually represent what happens to your body. The last chapter puts the body in peril again and shows the effect of an overdose with sleeping pills which was interesting to see depicted in a manga from inside the body. I will say its been a while but I really dislike the fan service in Code Black I normally don't mind it but it seems very out of place here and not really well done. Other than that this is another interesting volume and can't wait for the next volume.
As usual, this had some clever stuff in it, like the way sleep was handled. It does seem odd that someone would not get insulin treatment for diabetes until they started to go blind and their toe started falling off, but maybe healthcare in Japan is a lot more messed up than I thought. I think I am getting kind of tired of the constant crises in this comic though, so I might hold off on the next one.
Phew I forgot about this. I actually have seen the anime now, so I can’t remember this volume that well except that it’s *dark*
It’s kinda funny how much darker this series is compared to the original. In a lot of ways, I like the anime adaptation much more. (Maybe in part bc they had to tone down the ridiculous fan service, among other things.)
I have one more volume left. Not sure if that’s the end of the series or not, but I don’t know if I’ll read more if there is…
The big message of this volume and I suppose the ones before and after it is that Diabetes is bad - like REALLY bad. And as much as these Black comics are pretty grim, this volume at least has a bit of a turnaround as external support begins to manifest. And this body really needs the support at this point because the beleagered cells can only do so much.
I am really worried about this body's owner. And so are the cells. This volume continues to have dark themes of suicide and depression. Still entertaining and informative.
Content notes: Dark, adult themes, not suitable for school libraries
Now that I'm five volumes into this series, I'm totally hooked. I'm actually intrigued by the story while learning valuable health information. The art is also top notch. I had to go up to 5 stars because there's nothing like this series out there.
This goes over a lot of heavy stuff. It makes me wonder what the person on the outside is actually doing. It goes over alcoholism, diabetes, amputations, and overdoses.
The suffering for the cells continue and it is really harrowing. I don’t know how things could possibly get better, but I’m crossing my fingers super hard
Duh... kasihan banget sama sel-sel di jilid ini. Apalagi kalau host-nya sudah tidak punya semangat hidup dan malah mencoba bunuh diri. Nggak tega bacanya...
The consequences of obesity continue as diabetes sets in, one toe gets cut off because of gangrene, and the eye sustains vision loss. Not only that but the body is also suffering from sleep apnea, tendonitis, and acute pancreatitis. Lots of bad.
Also, a few chapters on the importance of brushing your teeth!
Back to the darker stuff, the body has been taking sleeping pills to deal with anxiety and insomnia, but when taken with alcohol, the effects are amplified and an overdose is incoming as the body goes into a coma! The body is attempting suicide!

I especially liked this issue as it dealt with diabetic health struggles. Given diabetes is common in my family and the doctors jargon isn’t always the clearest, this gave really clear explanations as to why the health effects occur all while giving an interesting story to follow
