Hawthorne Brothers #2

How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss

Rate this book
Perry Hawthorne is my boss. Only my boss. And I do NOT have a crush.

When one of THE Hawthorne brothers—known by their chiseled jawlines and their family-run farm and event center—hires me to be his virtual assistant, I do everything I can to keep him firmly in the work zone.

His grumpy demeanor helps.

His smoking hot profile picture does not.

But even if I do have a crush (a very tiny one), I can’t catch real feelings for a million different reasons.

Besides the whole business part of our relationship, I’m a single mom. I have to think about what’s best for my son, Jack. And my grumpy, divorced, humorless boss isn’t exactly giving me “ready to be a stepdad” vibes.

When Perry upgrades me from virtual to in-person assistant, I wonder if I’ve gotten him all wrong. He’s actually pretty great with Jack. And with me? Let’s just say the chemistry crackling between us might vaporize all my reasons for keeping my distance.

Trouble is, after his messy divorce, I’m not sure Perry’s ready to bet on a new relationship. But it isn’t just my heart that’s on the line. It’s Jack’s, too. And after everything we went through before my husband died, I’m not sure that’s a gamble I’m ready to take, no matter how desperate Jack is for a daddy.

How to Kiss Your Best Friend is a sweet romantic comedy with all the sizzling kisses you want in a closed-door romance but no explicit scenes.

This is my first book by Jenny Proctor and it most definitely won't be the last. It was cute and fun, exactly what you'd expect based on the cover and description.

I love the single mom trope and I wish we got more scenes with Lila's kid, Jackson. He made everything even more adorable. I also loved the family aspect, and that the story was set in the fall.

If there's anything I’d change, it would probably be to add some more drama. It almost felt like it was too easy for Lila and Perry to get their story perfect. And maybe Perry could have been a bit grumpier. I mean, it's in the title and it's a trope I love, but he was so sweet most of the time, and just occasionally awkward.

I already had How to Kiss Your Best Friend on my bookshelf and was wondering if I should read that one first, since it is the first in the series. But the novels are companions, not sequels, and How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss can work as a standalone, so I had no problem catching up.

But some of the characters mentioned got me intrigued and now I have to read their stories as well.

If you want to see my much more in depth review, you can check it out on my book blog NovelOnMyMind.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss by Jenny Proctor in exchange for an honest review.

This second installment did not disappoint!

Picture the grumpiest grump, made even grumpier due to divorce but who slowly comes alive when he finally meets his virtual assistant in person.

Picture said assistant whose sole focus has been raising her son after her husband passed away who slowly comes alive especially when she sees who she’s working for.

The standout star will come as no surprise. Perry’s gruff exterior didn’t cover up a macho man but one who has real hurts and fears. In turn, Lila’s strong and never pissed me off. She has realistic doubts and insecurities, but she doesn’t let that interfere with her personal forward momentum, and I’m so thankful she didn’t drive me bonkers.

This was fun and funny (but still so very tame), peppered with authentic worries and conflicts. Both Perry and Lila were awkward and had genuine vulnerabilities. What’s also great is their willingness to be brave enough to step out of their comfort zone to take a second chance on happiness.

The supporting cast dynamic is more developed here which I absolutely loved. Toss in a cute kid, a full on promoting of farm glam life, and a family that loves to call you out on your shit, and this had just enough humor and emotions to satisfy!

4.5⭐️ Grumpy Sunshine is not always my favorite trope, yet the cinnamon roll nature of our town “grump” Perry, made it a bit more my speed. Humorous family texts among meddling siblings, a mature, curvy MC and the most charming little boy, create an incredibly engaging family romcom.

Features:
•Single parent
•forced proximity
•one bed
•grumpy cinnamon roll hero
•hysterical family texting
•all the farm animals
•body positivity
•kissing only

Thank you Jenny Proctor for the gifted copy.

I absolutely adored this book!! 💜
I loved the tropes that this book offered - a grumpy hero, close family dynamics, text conversations, workplace romance, one-bed trope, and a truly lovely ending.❤️
Lila was an awesome character. She was a fantastic mom to Jack and was doing it all on her own and I'm so glad she found someone like Perry who loved her the way she deserved. 🥰

Perry- grumpy(still loveable)Hawthorne was swoon-worthy.❤️
He was incredibly sweet and patient with Lila and Jack. He helped Lila see her own beauty and made her believe in her dreams.
Beneath his grumpy exterior, he had his own hurtful experiences and fears.💜

And what made this book realistic were the fears of both MCs that the author presented. They were understandable and I liked this aspect of this light read.
And let's not forget about Jack - he was absolutely adorable!

I loved the rest of the Hawthornes and especially the brothers' group chat had me laughing so hard that tears were streaming down my face.

I am loving this series so far. Can't wait to read the third one.❤️

Super cute! I adored this book for so many different things!

Grumpy/sunshine combined with boss/employee
Single mom who is comfortable with her body
Hawthorne brothers - need I say more?
"only one bed"
Stonebrooke farms - I wish it was real so I could visit!
Jack and stairdads

This is a fun, delightful romance full of laughs and so many sweet and swoony scenes and dang, I loved that first kiss! A great story about love, family, and trust.

TW: divorce/toxic relationship

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

It's impossible to read this and not include an apple pun in your review. Stonebrook Farm was a picturesque setting for this apple-solutely precious romance. The mischievous pig and cuddly goats were a bonus!

Lila is a widowed single mom hired as the virtual assistant for the handsome Perry Hawthorne. Not intimidated by his seriousness, I loved seeing Lila find pleasure in cracking his demeanour—one apple pun at a time. Their online messages were so fun!

And when they finally meet? Sparks! These two certainly fall hard. The bashfulness, always thinking of each other when apart, was incredibly sweet. I adored the way Perry uplifted Lila, loving her exactly as she is.

But loving Lila isn't enough. There's also Jack, her son. Parenting is its own realm of chaos, and it was refreshing to include Perry adjusting to the idea of becoming a stepdad. It was a realistic conflict that I don't see enough in single parent romances.

I can't wait to revisit the Hawthorne brothers again in book three!

Thank you @jennyproctorbooks for sending me your books! 💕

This series is ADORABLE with such great humor! They're all fairly light, easy reads, and Proctor's characters are all so well-developed. The Hawthorne family is the most tight-knit, loveable, supportive family on the planet. 💕 Proctor's work is clean and wholesome, without being outdated or too Hallmarky.

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

This grumpy-sunshine, boss/employee romcom follows Lila, a single mom and virtual assistant, and her broody boss, Perry.

This one is my favorite! I love the single parent trope; Lila's son Jack was such a great addition to this sweet romcom. And there were several laugh-out-loud moments, especially with little Jack. I really appreciate the curvy FMC and body positivity here, and that Perry was a grump without being unlikeable.

📌 I read the first two along with the audiobooks, and narrators Lidia Dornet and Philip Alces make a fantastic team!

📌 This series is available on Kindle Unlimited!

1.5 stars 🥴

Okay, I know this rating might seem really harsh, but this was the most boring book I’ve read in a long ass time. It seemed promising after the first few chapters but then it fell off a steep cliff.

There is absolutely zero chemistry between Perry and Lila. Major snoozefest. And the whole “grumpy boss” bit? He is a little standoffish for maybe 2 chapters. But he basically decides he loves Lila after first laying eyes on her. From there, everything went downhill. We get both of their POVs, which I normally like, but they were both such boring people. Especially Perry. Lila was okay. But the insta love was putting me to sleep. Their intense feelings come out of nowhere. Aside from them thinking about how much they love each other, pretty much nothing else happens. Sooooo freakin boring 😫🥱🥱🥱

On top of the lack of a plot, insta love, similar POVs, boring characters, this is also a G rated romance. Which honestly can be fine if the author creates an interesting story line. I don’t always need smut. But this story had no tension, no build, no chemistry, basically none of the good stuff a typical grumpy x sunshine trope typically has. I’m annoyed because this book killed my streak of reading super fun and entertaining books.

I don’t think I’ll be reading anything else by this author.

How to Kiss Your Grumpy Boss
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Romance / RomCom
Format: Kindle eBook
Date Published: 11/1/22
Author: Jenny Proctor
Publisher: Four Petal Press
GR: 4.39

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Four Petal Press and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

My Thoughts: This is book no. 2 in the Hawthorne Brothers series. However, it can be read as a standalone. I am absolutely in LOVE with Lyla and Perry. This story is narrated by both Lyla and Perry, which I love the dual narration, as you get both sides, more of a complete story. This story follows a grumpy vs. sunshine trope, one that I am getting more into. This is a closed door romance with no spicy scenes, which I love both. Even being closed door, they had mad chemistry and the banter was truly amazing, especially with all of the apple puns, just brilliant. I hope each brother gets a book as I would love to explore all of the beautiful Hawthorne brothers! There are a couple of series that use the Stonebrook Farms, oh how I wish this was a real place I could visit as it sounds absolutely Devine! The author does such an amazing job with descriptions, you really feel like you are there! The characters were developed so well with depth, witty banter, chemistry, and creatively built up. The author’s writing style was complex, funny, crisp, intriguing, and just brilliant. Content warnings of domestic abuse and/or toxic relationships. This book released at the beginning of the month and I highly recommend, it is available on KU. This was such an endearing, sweet, swoony read!

Jenny does it again, creating another unique addition to the Hawthorne brothers series!

This was apple-salutely lovely! How to Kiss Your Grumpy boss is a second chance at love between two adults who haven’t had the best luck in their last marital relationships, but decide it’s ok to try to love again.

It’s messy and complex because there is a child involved…but neither can deny the pull they feel towards one another. I think the aspects of being a single parent and dating a woman with a child was done so realistically and incredibly well.

Lila and Perry have this instant connection and attraction but it slowly builds into something wonderful and scary. They have fun easy banter. Lila is hesitant to bring a man into her child’s life and Perry is so afraid he’s going to not be enough and mess it all up.

The setting was wonderful. I love the farm, the working relationship between Lila and Perry and the family dynamic that takes place there.

The Hawthornes are a large family thats always have fun meddling in each others business but it’s so endearing and only makes you wish you could be a part of their family too!

This was sexy and sweet and done very well. Every time I finish a book in this series I’m so glad we have more brothers to look forward to reading about!

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!

Yup, that pretty much sums up my feelings on How To Kiss Your Grumpy Boss. I loved the characters, the setting, the writing, and the feelings this book gave me. You know that swoony feeling that makes your stomach take a dip? I totally got that from this book. It was beyond good and I’m delighted that it came to life the way it did. A perfect romance, filled with pure sweetness (and not just from the apple puns!) that I could spend all day gushing over.

I am so in love with the Hawthorne family! I knew when I started reading this series that the Hawthorne family would steal my heart. And they are doing it. Completely. I adored the first book and the second one is no different. It brought me the same feelings but with a fantastic new couple.

Perry and Lila’s romance was so divine. I adored these characters individually, and together they were perfection. Their dynamic was balanced in this perfect way so that her sweet sunshine met his grumbly grump and lasered straight to that irresistibly soft underbelly - and I was a goner. Perry was gruff at times, but he is hardworking and protective of those he loves. He was incredibly endearing and swoon-inducing. I loved him! Lila had this special quality about her. She was so down to earth and strong. She's a single mom who has been through a lot but has come out the other side better, stronger, and determined. She's a hard worker and fighting to make something of herself, to create a good life for her son. She was so relatable and I love that in a heroine. Oh, and their chemistry together? Combustible! Not only did I love Perry and Lila’s story, but I loved the part that Perry’s entire family played in the book. They were fantastic with Lila and gave her that sense of family she had always wanted.

To say I LOVED this book would be an understatement. It was a joy to read. Perry and Lila are ALL FEELS. They made me melty and gushy and warm and so incredibly happy. This romance was delicious, light and easy, and so undeniably beautiful. This is romance at its finest and can I just say how excited I am that there are more Hawthorne’s to come? I just adore this family and simply cannot wait for the next book!

Perry is the ultimate grump of a Hawthorne brother and although he’s gruff, he’s a great boss. A sticky situation leads him to meeting his assistant, Lila, in person, and the sparks flew out of my ears as I listened to this sweet romcom that was full of heart and emotion.

Jenny Proctor knows how to deliver a story that pierces the heart in all the good ways. A single mom with curves and sass; a little boy who is desperate for a “stair-dad” and worms his way into this apple owning man’s life; a surprising meet-cute; puns, baby animals, and even a high school reunion had me smiling, swooning and laughing so hard, especially with the group text thread between the brothers.

There’s nothing sweeter than watching a woman truly feel beautiful and wanted, while also observing a man realize his great worth and strengths. From the very first page, I was swept away into this world and loved every second of it.

I LOVED THE BUTTERCUP OUT OF THIS BOOK!!!!

Jenny hits it out of the park again and I’m officially a Hawthorne Brother’s groupie! 😉😂

This had so many elements that I just love in a book…
A grump of a hero, curvy girl rep, little kids, baby goats?!?!, close family dynamics, text convos, boss/assistant romance, apple puns, only one bed trope, amazing kisses, an absolutely Fanta ending, and a big ol’ pig!!! 😂😍😍

Perry was so swoony, y’all!!! Hotty Hawthorne, himself! I knew I would love him! He was so sweet and patient with Lila. And Jack!
He helped Lila to see that she was so beautiful to him. He showed her that her dreams were valid and could come true! 🥰 And even helped with elements of that dream… (*ahem* PIANO! 😍🫠)
He had his fears about being an instant father and I thought that was realistic. He frustrated me a tiny bit at the end but he completely made up for it! Don’t worry!

Lila was awesome! She was such a good mom to Jack and she was doing it all herself! Her voice was so funny and honest. I related to her insecurity in her body. I’m so glad she found someone like Perry to love her the way she deserved.

Jack was adorable too! I seriously love kids in books! 🥰
The rest of the Hawthornes especially the brothers 😏 were amazing too! Chapter 10 with the brothers group chat made me laugh so hard I had tears! 🤣😂

I really can’t wait for Lennox’s book! It’s enemies to lovers and y’all know how I feel about that trope! 😍

Extra Things I Loved:
The intro Buttercup scene 😂🐖
The apple puns
The first roadside meeting! With a jack and Jack!
Jack 😍
“Stairdad”
The selfie taking 😂
All the texts!
Chapter 10 🤣🤣🤣
The HAND FEEDING apples scene 😍
The High School Reunion (the whole trip!)
“Kids these days..” 😂😅
The tie scene 🥹
The ENTIRE ENDING from the 4 mile run to the piano 😍😍😍

*Thank you, Jenny, for my ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own and genuine!*

DNF at 25%. It's the instalust. It's a "clean" romance... but sadly, doesn't mean it actually includes two people getting to know each other before they lust after each other. The heroine didn't even need to meet the hero to lust after him.

Also, he isn't her boss. He's her client. There's a difference.

Romance: 3/5
Chemistry: 4/5
1st Kiss: +-59% in
Spice: 0/5 (it's a clean one y'all)
Humour: 4/5
Drama: 1/5
Cry factor: 0/5
Suspense: 0/5
Foul language: 0/5

Positive thoughts:
- I loved that both had a past that they were struggling to get past and are so not confident with themselves to let them fall once again on love. And when they finally do, it's beautiful.
- I love Perry's awkwardness, he's a shy grump and has no clue what his doing and that made for some laughing moments.
- I love that it felt very real with Perry with regards to Lila's son. Getting a new son (or a stairson) is no joke and he panicked, not trusting his ability. You can never be perfect, but you can do your best.

Negative:
- I wish we had seen a bit more of Perry and Jack together, he seemed to be such a sweet boy, I would have loved to have had more.
- And I wish we had more scenes with Buttercup messing up Perry's day.

Overall:
- It was a sweet, clean romance loaded with chemistry and funny moments.
- It will definitely get you laughing and in a good mood.
- It's a fast paced, easy to read and you won't want to put it down.

Tropes:
- Single mom
- Farm life
- Boss and employee
- Broken hearts
- Grumpy vs sunshine
- Apple puns
- One bed

i am very late to post my review but here it is :)

it was a fun and cute read, and i'm glad that i read it. the story was very easy to read, which i loved! the way i got really fast into the story made it easier to read, and made it so enjoyable. the characters were so fun and their dynamic was also pleasant to read.
the thing i loved most about this book is the found family - it's one of my favorite tropes and it was so well written in this book. i also liked how it was very light, it help me to read it in one sitting! the simple story, yet entertaining :)

one thing i'd say though is that i thought that the Perry would be a little more grumpy. it didn't feel like he was THAT MUCH a grumpy person bc he was always thoughtful to her! but overall i loved this book, and i definitely recommend it :)

this is my first book from this author, but certainly most not my last!

also a thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for giving me this arc in exchange of an honest review!

HOW TO KISS YOUR GRUMPY BOSS is the second book in the Hawthorne Brothers series by Jenny Proctor. I will forever stan Jenny's books, and have totally in love with the Hawthorne family and the world of the family farm. Baby goats, apple picking, and steamy restaurants...what more could you ask for?!?!?!

Goodness, I loved Perry's grumpy demeanor. He's still struggling with coming to terms with his divorce, which has left him with reservations about his worth as a partner. Enter his virtual assistant and he realizes fast that he has a crush. Perry is so darn adorable and awkward when he realizes he wants to try with her, especially since he is completely out of practice.

Lila is a single mom just trying to hold it together, and doing the best she can. Even though she is a widow, her grief is dealt with in a nontraditional way, which I liked seeing in a book. I loved that Lila had a backbone and wouldn't back down from what she knows is best for her and her son. Her goofy apple puns slowly wore down Perry and I was wholeheartedly rooting for their happiness.

With single parents, you always get the bonus of adorable children. Lila's son Jack completely stole the show. He is so sweet and funny. I loved how he was obsessed with finding his "stairdad."

Perry and Lila had easy chemistry and their flirty banter over text was on point. This closed door, workplace romance also has a side of fake dating and only one bed.

Light and easy

So cute! This hero is more grumbly than grump, falling hard and fast for his girl - and her adorable son. I jumped right into the series and had no trouble keeping up, but the family-oriented farm setting added a special something to the story. It's light and exceedingly low angst, with an easygoing, feel good vibe. Both characters fall quickly, and it was great to see them start to heal after troublesome relationships left their hearts bruised. I did think that the relationship developed in the blink of an eye; there seemed to be a lot of talk of the hero becoming an instant father to the heroine's son, and they were definitely getting ahead of themselves at times. But I liked a whole lot about this cute, mild romance, and it flew by.

The story follows Lila, a single mom who has been raising her son alone since her husband passed away. While people tend to feel very sympathetic about Lila's loss, she's the only one who knows that her marriage was already unraveling when it came to a sudden end. When Lila becomes the virtual assistant for a man running an apple farm, her new boss gives off grumpy vibes. But when they meet in person, Lila realizes that there's more to Perry than meets the eye. He's still reeling from the end of his own marriage, and hasn't quite gotten back to his old self. Spending time together starts to make both Lila and Perry feel like themselves again, as does the attraction that sparks between them. However, getting close to Lila means accepting that she's part of a package deal, and Perry isn't sure that he's ready for that kind of complication.

Lighthearted and laidback, this is a slow burn/closed door romance that feels very sweet and easy. Both characters are exceedingly likable, and watching them find themselves again was really great to see. Perry isn't all that much of a grump either - it was clear from the start that there was a nice guy lurking beneath the surface, and it was only a matter of time before he'd make an appearance. There are some definite instalove vibes and the relationship progresses quickly, which is the main thing that held me back from enjoying this more. There's a lot of stress surrounding the fact that Lila is a single mom, and Perry feels pressure to fill the role of Dad almost from the start. Not sure that you should really be trying to be a father figure after one or two interactions with a child, but I understand that those feelings would come up sooner rather than later. Beyond that, this was a solid 4-star read for me the whole way through, and I can see myself continuing with the series.

Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)
Trigger Warning: brief mentions of divorce, death of a spouse, and psychological abuse

Perry Hawthorne enjoys running Stonebrook Farm along with his sister Olivia, but when she goes on maternity leave he is persuaded to get a virtual assistant to lighten his load. Everything seems to be going well with his assistant Lila until they meet in person. That's when Perry realizes that Lila is gorgeous, single, and has an adorable 5 year old son. Perry hasn't had much interest in dating since his disastrous divorce, but his beautiful assistant is awakening feelings that he forgot he was capable of until now. As he spends more time with Lila on the farm, he starts to wonder if he's ready to move on from his past heartbreak. Can he be the man Lila and her son need in their lives?

I was so excited to head back to Stonebrook Farm for another installment in this series! While I wouldn't really call Perry a grump, I enjoyed seeing him overcome his serious and awkward facade as he spent time around Lila. Their feelings did progress quickly, but there were several sweet and swoony moments along the way. We got a sexy and romantic apple taste test, a very maturely handled one bed situation, and adorable baby goat snuggles 😍 I liked how the conflict was very realistic as Perry was forced to confront his doubts and concerns when it came to dating a single mom. I really wanted to give him a big hug when he was struggling, but I also understood where he was coming from. And I totally felt for Lila in the moment too. It made it even more special when they made up in the end. And I can't forget to mention all the cameos from other members of the Hawthorne family! I love seeing characters from the other books, and I look forward to more in book 3!

oh my goodness I loved this!

Jenny Proctors books read like the sweetest hallmark movies ever and sometimes that's just exactly what you need in life lol

I loved that the main characters son wasnt an insufferable child, and that the romance was just so flipping adorable.

AND THE PUNS omg I was cackling from the first chapter

the only thing that makes me not give this a full 5 star was the plus size rep left something to be desired.

cannot wait to read about the next Hawthorne Brother 😩

I loved Perry’s growth and his character arc as he worked through a lot of new things. He was sincere and swoony and just the right amount of grump. Everything felt so perfectly attuned to life and that made me feel all the more. I can’t imagine the thought process through deciding to become an instant Dad and I liked that there was an up and down to his journey. The ex-wife didn’t overshadow anything and I appreciate she was in the story just enough to understand the past and see the bright future ahead.

Lila & Jack were amazing too. I loved them and how Lila worked hard to be the best Mom she could be for Jack and also realize it was okay to find happiness for herself. Lila was full of confidence I wish I had. The body image conversations also hit my heart too. I liked the way this was approached and handled throughout. Jack was the perfect little side character. Sometimes kids can be hit/miss in a read, but he was GREAT. Incredibly sweet, full of love to give, and very much like a 5-year old.

I loooove this family and the support (and laughs) they provide for one another. The farm is a wonderful setting as always. Fantastic kissing scenes, all the honest moments and all the feels.

Worth staying up past my bedtime for this one!

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: divorce, loss of a spouse (prior but recounted)

Notes
This book is part of an interconnected series (Hawthorne Brothers)that can be read as a standalone

What I Liked
Proctors writing from the perspective of a single mother is well done. Lila is a strong, independent woman of many talents who has dreams of something more. She prioritizes her child and the effect her potential romantic relationships may have in her childs life.
I apple-aud her efforts !🍎

Jack- he may be the kid but he is full of personality! Precocious to the core!! 🍎

Perry- Crisp and sweet- yum!! 🍎

Overall
Punny and Perfect for a fall reads with a guaranteed “apply” ever after 🍎

I loved this book! Honestly this is probably the most underrated book series. They are clean next to no cussing and super cute. It wasn’t really a grumpy to sunshine so that was the only disappointment.

Clean romance.
Oh my goodness. Perry and Lila and wee Jack. This sequel was perfection. Grumpy Perry, guarded Lila and little Jack just wanting a ‘stairdad’ to go to the father son breakfast at school. This book pulled the heartstrings I didn’t know I had. I’m loving this series that’s following the four handsome Hawthorne brothers. All uniquely different but so connected to each other.
Perry opening up after his divorce and being everything Lila needed after the death of her mentally abusive husband was just so perfectly written. You could feel what they were feeling. Perry trying to be a father figure and getting syrup in his leather shoe had me cringe crying with laughter.
