Amazon Verified Purchase Salon Antics is the second book wrote by author Madison Lake. Also the second piece of work I have read from the author.
My first was the upcoming book, A Cloud Of Hawthorne.
So how does Madison Lake fare in her second book?
Stay a while and listen...
I have never read romantica, nor have I heard of the genre before finding Madison Lake on twitter. I had to admit that it was curiousity that killed the cat. I read a Cloud of Hawthorne and found myself wanting to read more of what she had to offer. So it was armed with a credit card and an Ipad that I got myself a copy of Salon Antics.
Madison Lake writes a good story. The plot of Salon Antics is easy to follow. Something that is very important if you want to read a book and relax at the same time. Does it mean the plot is dumbed down? No. Definately not. I can see that a lot of effort and dare I say sit love for her story and characters have gone into this book.
The characters are beautifully written. Each one has a believable past, reacts to present day scenarios as one would believe a real person would react to. Heroes are not men of steel, they have their weaknesses, heroines are not the frail porcelain type dolls that you fear will break the second they put a foot wrong.
And if you read the story and find out what these ladies find themselves in, then it is understandable that they be tough as nails when need be but they do have a vulnerable side to themselves.
Characters like Savannah Porshce avoid the stereotypical role that she might have found herself in in other stories. (Yes, she does sound like the lead actress in a porno.) At times I felt her character was leading one way, but thanks to some skilful story telling she is taken into completely another direction. In other words, I was surprized, not something that happens a lot to me when I read.
The same goes for story. Madison Lake avoids potholes like the plague. I never though to myself for one second that I had seen or heard or read this before. She weaves little twists, surprizes and the like into the story when you least expect it, all whilst keeping the story believable and enjoyable. If I have to find a fault with her writing, it is this: She will sometimes refer to her characters as only G (Referring to the character of Genevieve.) This is fine in dialogue, as that is the way people talk. But when describing action... Not so much. But that is just me. It does not ruin the story at all.
And in case you were wondering: Yes, it is spicy. Not overtly erotic that you would find in the thousands of other titles available for the Kindle, but it blends perfectly with the story. Never too much, but also never too little. Something that I am learning to appreciate these days.
What about value for money? Yes, I love Madison Lake's stories. But is this an author I would pay money again to read? I would say without reservation that my answer to that would be yes.
Salon Antics deliver the goods: Very good story, characters that I loved, settings that was described in beautiful detail, but not so much that I felt bored to tears.
If you are a fan of good story telling, get this. More so if you are tired of the general erotica that is served to you on a platter. But do yourself a favor and introduce yourself to Madison Lake and the crew of Salon Antics. They are a cut above the rest
A really nice read. Loved Madison Lake's story telling skills. Easy (as in relaxing) enjoyable read. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a good romance title.
