2.5🌟
It's a pretty mid story and definitely lacks depth. There are some pretty interesting ideas, but it doesn't explore them by any means; And there's almost zero character development. Also, in the end, it feels as if there are lots of unresolved stuff or some stuff are just resolved in a really unsatisfying manner. But to be fair, it was a pretty fun read. So, even though it deserves less, I'll give it a 2.5.

steve orlandos 2099 books all feel like they're sequels of books he forgot to write, while also forgetting to write half the plot that happens in the books he does write
all while just throwing random crap at the wall, and nothing is sticking. he is the absolute worst person to write these books and by far the worst 2099 writer (no small feat)
also miguel in this story, along with the last 2099 mini, is just treated like the way batman would treat bruce wayne if he wasnt rich. disposable. nothing but the face under the mask. no friends or family, no life outside of spider-man. it dehumanizes him and removes much of what made the peter david books great.
dark genesis has all the same problems that exodus had, only this doesnt even have the gorgeous art that exodus had to even attempt to redeem it
just read peter davids 2099 books instead

Dark Genesis follows hot on the heels of Exodus, the last Spider-Man 2099 mini-series, and does much the same in terms of plot. It introduces a bigger idea, then spends the next four issues collecting characters to throw at the problem until it goes away. Unfortunately, what Exodus did well was keeping the momentum up, while Dark Genesis presents the problem of Carnage, and then aside from reminding us that he's killing people all the time, kind of forgets about him until the end in favour of bringing in 2099 versions of other characters.

There's some good ideas here. Alien Spider-Woman and Zombie Blade are fun, and the new Daredevil is an intriguing one, but their introductions bring the plot to a stop, and there's just no sense of urgency behind Carnage's murder spree, even at the end, and even though this series was released weekly, which usually keeps the momentum going.

Justin Mason's on art for all five issues, another departure from the last series which had a different artist on every issue. He's...fine, I guess? There's no sign that he ran out of time as the series went on, his art's very consistent, it's just consistently...okay.

Not Miguel O'Hara's best outing. If we get another one of these, I'd like for us to focus back on Miggy a little - we don't need more 2099 characters when we barely have time to spend with the ones we already know and love.

Welcome back to the 2099 universe! If this is your first visit (I'm looking at you 'Across the Spiderverse' movie watchers) you best find a different comic. The 2099 universe ...the home of Miguel O'Hara...is a convoluted mess.

If you REALLY want to see what's been happening recently, then pick up Spider-Man 2099: Exodus. That'll get you clued in to recent events and characters. The story here? We have a Carnage equivalent released into the city and the combined forces of...some classic 2099 characters and some new introductions...must save the city from itself(?)
====
Where 2099 felt new and divergent, this felt tacked on and copycat-like. Carnage (the original Spider-Man villain) just had a major anniverary and another huge crossover event in the main universe. 'Oh, look. Let's do something similar in a future Spider-Man miniseries'
---
Bonus: Oh, how the 'mighty' have fallen. Punisher 2099 is worse off than Robocop? Ouch.
Bonus Bonus: Halloween Jack is/was a X-Men 2099 villain (look that series up!)

It's probably time that I give up on Marvel's 2099 universe. this story was pretty much of a drudge, which I was a little surprised by because I've liked Orlando's work in the past. But, the recycling of current Marvel characters plus recycling 2099 characters (I mean cyborg Punisher 2099?).

Nope, it was both disappointing and boring. I'd rather go back and re-read the Doom 2099 storylines that I haven't read (the non Warren Ellis issues) or go back and read the Peter David Spider-Man 2099 issues because I like his work.

This is simultaneously the first Spider-Man comic I’ve read and the first 2099 comic of any variety. It’s quite enjoyable and reads with a nice flow.

The collaboration of an extensive amount of characters in such a short series (5) made it feel compact. While the actual story itself felt like it was stretched out 2 issues more than it needed.

All in all it has a lot of dope moments and it’s a good, funny time. It just doesn’t feel like it’s at the highest echelon of story telling.

The art, choreography, characters, and premise are all really interesting. Unfortunately, the story fails in execution. It feels like the series premiere of a kid's superhero team-up show. Introductions are sudden and half baked, and all of the character motivations are one-dimensional. That being said, it's a fun showcase of a What-If universe, with a clever twist on Carnage as a villain, it's just not something you'll think about for years to come.

Here's a shocker, another shitty comic from Steve Orlando. I really don't understand why Marvel keeps giving this guy work. The last thing Spider-Man 2099 needed was a super generic Carnage 2099. Let's just make Marvel's characters more and more derivative instead of doing something original. This story is just bad in every way. It's nonstop fighting with no purpose. There's no real story here. The art is serviceable but that's about all you can say about it.

In many ways this reminds me of Maximum Carnage. I don't doubt Orlando was aware of the parallels. As such, this string of issues is a collection of mindless action with surface-level investment at best. This is not a story that aims to be just a schlock fest, but it really hits a bullseye.

This is the first comic I’ve read set in Marvels 2099 universe and I’ve got to say that I’m disappointed. I do not like this future universe. I like the design of carnage and the art is pretty great in general but honestly I’m not a fan of any of the future characters

Some cool ideas here that fell flat for me mostly due to the rough art style.
