The Lost Slipper by Michele Israel Harper mixes two fairy tales into one. In this edition, we learn the story of Cossette, Ro’s little sister. A word of warning, the ending is not pulled into a little happily-ever-after moment. Harper takes a realistic approach to the fairy tales’ endings. A little disturbing in the end. Harper showcases the horrors of magic and the evil of a fairy godmother, the stepmother, and the sisters. Readers will enjoy how deep into the emotions of Cossette that Harper dives into. It was easy to empathize with her plight with her “family”. A touch of romance, but nothing like the Disney version. It is downplayed a lot. More room for that in future installments. Harper does a wonderful job at crafting together a setting that is familiar yet dark at the same time. Reader’s imaginations will sparkle as they travel through the different settings and watch the story come to fruition in the end. Not the predictable happy-ever-after moment. Moments left unanswered so the reader will have to read Kill the Beast in order to see what actually happens next.

The Lost Slipper is an emotional fairy tale retelling that mashes the beloved Cinderella with the lesser known Diamonds and Toads. This all takes Place in Harper's established Beast Hunter series and takes place during the events of Kill the Beast.

The Lost Slipper stands on its own, but will add depth and understanding if read as part of the Beast Hunter series.

The Story follows the Cinderella formula pretty closely only pulling out the Diamonds and Toads plot about the midway point. The addition of Diamonds and Toads to the standard Cinderella narrative really amps up the tension and makes the plight of our poor heroine that much harder.

The lost Slipper is an emotional ride, perfect for anyone who ever thought that Cinderella had it too easy.
