In this fast-paced sequel to The Haze, International Bestselling Author Jack Hunt brings a terrifying scenario to life.
The worst isn’t dying from it but surviving.
Almost three years after a deadly biological event killed millions, Alice carves out a life with an isolated community of survivors on a fortified island in New York.
But just as quickly as the Haze spread, so has news of her rare blood type placing a target on her back.
Now someone has come to collect.
When tragedy strikes, Jonah and her daughter must face the terrors of the outside world to find her.
Forced to venture into the concrete jungle, they quickly realize the Haze isn’t the only threat that lurks beyond the island.
Cut off from help and unaware of the danger ahead, Alice soon learns no one can be trusted, and someone believed to be dead may still be alive.
I’ve read the books in this series and enjoyed them. I believe there are more books in this series and will continue to read those also, as I want to know the rest of the of the story.
You should read this series, not exactly the same as his other dystopian books, but a great read nonetheless .
This book in the series was good but it was so much like the first book in the series! Nothing new accomplished and no new hope for the future! Very disappointing ending.
“From one mother to another, I think more than anyone, you should understand there isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do to be reunited with my child.”
No matter the protocols put into place or the loyalty sworn by those to protect you could never truly guarantee your safety. Left on Governor's Island for the past seven months can leave anybody bored, but nobody more than an eighteen year old girl. Jade Walker spent the last several months recovering from her coma as she learned to walk and speak after the year she spent locked inside herself. When she meets Caleb (Cabbie), he's swift to swoon her and begin winning her over with compliments and friendship. When he asked her to sneak under the bridge separating th m from Manhattan, she jumped on the chance to see the devastation of the Haze first hand. With Jonah tasker by her mother to keep an eye on her, he follows the two and the trip set off across the ruins. Unfortunately, Caleb never had the intentions for her and when her mother Alice Walker caught wind of her daughter's whereabouts, she would come running. Kidnapped by the Resistance, Alice is now missing qnd is the only p reon who jolds the chte in her bloodstream. Horrified, the two set out again on a rescue mission to find her and tell nobody about this. Running into so many people along the way, too many were met with death and torture and left the entire mission looking bleaker by the hour.
It was forbidden but that’s what made it all the more enticing.
Locked away in an abandoned apartment building, Alice was tortured and drained of her blood again and again as too many greedy hands were at stake. After Caleb tried assaulting her, she killed him with a fork because screaming in blood her next known location, Hell's Kitchen in New York in hopes somebody would read between the lines and find her. Drug through and beaten down, she found herself facing Abigail Hayes and unknown at the time, the leader of the Resistance. Learning she was Jonah's birth mother who had her baby stolen and put into foster care, she felt uneasy and a sense of fear of the new woman as her future was still uncertain. As Jade and Jonah drew closer and followed the clues, they met a retired US Veteran named Max who was willing to join their quest for the cure. After his family was slaughtered, they thought they'd never see him again but he would reappear on a popular Beater location where themselves and Tucker were being held captive. With the place rigged with explosives, they found Aloce and began fleekngnto safety. Unfortunately, it wouldn't last long before camouflaged soldiers would capture them and bring them to teir leader, Clementine (Animal Hayes) and welcome them into the myth of the Resistance compound.
“How do you know what makes sense without deciding what doesn’t?” He looked at him. “We know what is by opposites. Up and down, left and right. Can you have one without the other?”
This was very welcome sequel for me personally because I had no expectation of its eventual existence back when I read The Haze. Though that book felt significantly incomplete I wasn't convinced there would be a sequel since there was no mention of it at in my Kindle (as I'm accustomed to seeing whenever I read a series in the making). Though I thought the story was great, I was still disgruntled about the loose ends and pretty much just gave up on it. Needless to say, I was surprised and thrilled when I discovered that there was indeed a sequel, one I thought was desperately needed. And a mighty fine one at that.
While I do wish I had reread The Haze to have it fresher in my mind, this book does a decent job in having characters mentioning little things here and there to remind me, so I didn't feel too lost. Things pick up exactly where it left off in the prologue, with Alice and company being taken from the compound they had narrowly escaped at the end of book one. After the high-stakes prologue, though, we settle into the new timeline after a slight, 3-month time jump. And after that, it takes no time at all for new stakes to be raised and new threats to unfold.
Jack Hunt wastes no time getting to the point in this one. News of Alice's immunity runs rampant in this new savage world, and so do those who want to snag her for themselves. When specific circumstances land Alice in the hands of those who wish to bring her harm for their benefit, it's up to Jonah and her daughter Jade to find her. Only trouble is, the world is even MORE brutal than before, with new threats (and allies) lurking in every corner. But who can possibly be trusted? Jack Hunt does a mighty fine job introducing several new, likable characters, but be careful who you get attached to; there is devastation afoot.
Like its predecessor, this book is savage and violent, much of it rather graphic. There's an ominous feeling of hopelessness and sadness throughout. But there's also tenacity and strength and comradery that made for some fantastic reading. There was hardly a dull moment in this book. If I had to complain about anything, it was the handful of inexplicable plot conveniences. I had several questions how a certain scene or moment came to be and received no answer. Whether or not I'll get those answers in the next entry I can't say, but I'm sure by then it'll be too late, given how this story ended and what the next journey will be.
This was a fantastic read all around and I am now comfortably eager (and confident) of another entry in this fledgling series.
I was looking forward to this sequel and it was pretty much more of the same and still confusing on who is the bad guys and who are the good guys and what exactly is going on with the country or the world.
This book picks up where the last one ended ... Alice, Jonah and Jade end up on Governor's Island in NYC and Alice has been giving her blood to bring people out of the coma's from the EVENT. But since this is a resistance type of group. they do not have access to top level scientists and no one knows how long or what her blood does. Jade is an idiot Alice gets captured and Jonah and Jade go off to rescue her and along the way meet a bunch of characters who help them or die trying.
I did not understand the ending with Abigail and now I have to hope there is a book 3 to explain it
The sequel to a book it seems I read eons ago. I had to reread the first one…glad I did because this story is fantastic. This book is well worth your time to read if you enjoy plot twists, action, suspense, and a damn fine story. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Mothers will go to great lengths to find and protect their children. Both Alice and Abigail have a vested interest as mothers with young people caught up in this crazy struggle to stay alive while looking for freedom in the midst of great bondage. Brooklyn and Manhattan are no longer safe. Different groups seek to find the cute to the haze and Alive is key!!!!
As with The Haze, this was good book. I'd recommend this series even if it's relatively new one. Lots of action and several unexpected moments. Just be sure to start with The Haze first.
What an exciting read, I could not put this book down! Highly recommend! Way to go Jack hunt! I am a new fan now and will be getting other Jack Hunt books!
