We live in an era when responsibility for exam results lies with teachers and not their students, but it's time to redress the balance so that students take more of the responsibility for their learning. A class can be skilled and motivated to learn without a teacher always having to lead. Engaging learners in this way unpicks intrinsic motivation, the foundation that underpins a productive learning environment and helps to develop independent learning.
Based on five years of intensive research through Osiris Education's award-winning Outstanding Teaching Intervention program this book is packed with proven advice and innovative tools that were developed in these successful outstanding lessons. Written in the same humorous, thought-provoking style with which they both teach and train, the authors aim to challenge all who teach, from newly qualified teachers to seasoned professionals, to reflect on their day-to-day practice and set an agenda for sustainable improvement.
A very helpful, practical guide for teachers. It takes a no nonsense approach to, as the title states, engaging students into their own learning process. Because it is based on practical ideas and countless lesson observations, the authors handpicked their best examples for their readers. There's room for reflection after each chapter as well as at the end of the book. As an experienced teacher, I can thoroughly recommend it because it is a refreshing, worthy reading.
Practical tips, not too much jargon and written more informally! Love the analogy of a baby learning to crawl...doesn't just go 'can't be arse, so I won't bother...' all children have the ability to engage and get into their 'flow'. Another one used to support my staff meeting on 'helplessness'. Some ideas I think the teachers thought were quite ridiculous BUT some were pretty useful and food for thought!
Excellent resource for teachers new and old. Loads of useful ideas and suggestions for how to make your lessons engaging, explained with a healthy dose of accessible psychology. Not at all dry and the relevance and reasons for each suggestion is clearly laid out. Highly recommend.
Inspiring, full of great ideas and practical tips which can actually be used in the classroom. It's great to remind yourself that great lessons can be achieved without the burden of printing lots and lots of materials, and that the pupils can be tapped into as a resource. Very helpful for the kind of lessons that I do.
