Preaching That Gets Through
All of us who hear preaching are aware that some of it gets through and that some of it does not. Why is this? What, if anything, can preachers do to communicate more effectively? Es handelt sich hier um keine sehr komplexe oder tiefe Materie, aber zeigt ganz gut die Basics des Themas auf und ist vor allem auch sehr praktisch, was mir gefallen hat.
Der Autor hat bereits viele Jahre selbst gepredigt und zu diesem Thema schon viele Seminare gegeben, in denen er Prediger schult.
Es geht im Buch eigentlich um sämtliche Aspekte des Predigens. Also vom Thema der Predigtsvorbereitung bis zur eigentlichen Ausführung und wobei es darauf ankommt.
Das Buch besteht aus 3 Teilen. Nach dem Vorwort beschäftigt sich der 1. Teil mit der Frage, was Predigen überhaupt ist, was der Autor von der Bibel her mit Hilfe des Ursprungstext ausführt und erläutert. Er zeigt da wesentliche Aspekte auf, die eine jede Predigt beinhalten sollte und die einen jeden Prediger ausmachen sollte.
Im 2. Teil geht es darum, was eine gute Predigt ausmacht. Hier werden Aspekte genannt, wie Genauigkeit in der Auslegung, Substanz in der Lehre, Klarheit in der Struktur, Lebendigkeit in der Illustration, treffsichere Anwendung, hilfreiche Ausführung und übernatürliche Autorität. Er erklärt die Punkte, zeigt auf wieso ein jeder einzelne 100% wichtig ist und das die endgültige Ausführung der Predigt ein Gesamtbild darstellen sollte, das diese alle enthält.
Im 3. gibt es einen methodischen Vorschlag zur praktischen Predigtvorbereitung und als Schluss ein Lebensbild eines Predigers, dessen Wesen und Predigten die im Buch vorkommenden Inhalte verkörpert.
PS: die Abbildung ist wohl nicht ganz richtig, aber was besseres habe ich in der App nicht gefunden. Ich habe das Buch auf Deutsch gelesen, als „Predigen - fesseln oder faseln?“. Es waren 208 Seiten.

This book (booklet) is as helpful as it is brief. What a gem. Add this to the required reading list of seminarians and preachers-in-training.
To summarize, effective sermonizing has 3 human pillars and one divine foundation: the pillars of ethos, pathos, and logos, and the foundation of dunamis. This was the most helpful way (that I've read) of laying out the ingredients of good preaching (homiletics).
I appreciated Olyott's stance on the superiority of preaching from notes instead of from a manuscript. This is what most of the effective preachers in history have done, like Spurgeon and Lloyd-Jones.

A great little booklet that takes the ethos, pathos, logos paradigm in ancient Greece and then reframes it within preaching. Ethos is about one's integrity, pathos about one's love for others, logos about the desire for truth. The key aspect is the dunamis, the power of the Spirit, which is unique to Christianity.
It's a simple booklet but great to refresh your focus on key aspects of preaching. The last little chapter was gold where he gets you to think about everything you don't want in preaching and then forces you to think 'upside-down' to challenge it.
