Available for the first time in paperback This Spectred Isle presents the 'other side' of a collection of intriguing English Heritage sites. Here you will find the legends and the mysteries, the tales of the unexplained, and the shivery unknown - the fascinating stories that bring the past to life and cloth the ruins. The stories follow a journey from the tip of Cornwall at St Michael's Mount, ending in the far north-east at Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island and a trip through time from the prehistoric through to the ghosts of the Second World War.
I thought it was a good idea to read this in the weeks coming up to hallowe'en. I read it at night in bed. It really creeped me out. Both the text and the photos were scary, especially the photos where it was possible to make out dubious shapes and unpleasant light effects. The foreword and the text were silly and credulous sometimes, but if you can get over that, it makes a fun, spooky read. You will also learn some history and myth concerning England.
It's not a book that you read, it's a good coffee table book with amazing images from the haunted places in th UK. The stories and the pictures are spooky, but I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in ghosts, abandoned castles and history.
This is a great book of black and white photos of haunted or historical sites in the British Isles, with accompanying text about the legends or history of each. The photos are amazing. The book is basically an updated version of a book I was obsessed with as a kid, The Haunted Realm. I used to check it out from the library every autumn. I was heartbroken when I tried to buy it years later and it was out of print...and thrilled to buy this instead!
Anything by Marsden is amazing! He is a photographer not a writter although he is more than capable as a writter. The photographs are atmospheric and beautiful. These are the books I hunt and collect so if you come across any I dont have let me know.
