Two words. John 11:35. It is the shortest verse in the entire Bible and it reads, "Jesus wept." Have you ever considered the monumental truth behind that verse? Jesus, fully man and fully God, found himself in the midst of human tragedy -- the death of a dear friend -- the death of a dear friend -- and he did what we would do. He cried. In this utterly profound book, Bruce Marchiano explores the head and heart of Jesus to answer questions hurting people have been asking for generations. Where was Jesus when I buried my husband? What was Jesus' reaction when my son was paralyzed? Or when my baby died? Or when the bus overturned? Or the tornado hit? When the terrorists struck on September 11, how did Jesus respond? The answer just might blow you away. Jesus wept.
I read this powerful little book in one afternoon, and it was wonderful! With only seven chapters and an afterword contained in 114 pages, double-spaced, you can easily read Jesus Wept in one sitting. However, you may find it meaningful to read it in a week as a daily devotional.
Penned by Bruce Marchiano, who played Jesus in the film, The Gospel According to Matthew, this book gets at the heart of the Gospel. When our pain is so profound that God seems distant at best, cruel at worst, Marchiano reminds us that Jesus wept. He weeps whenever we hurt, because He not only sees our pain, but identifies with it. Just as surely as He wept at Lazarus' grave and when our world was shattered on 9/11, Jesus weeps with us through every pain. Not only that, but He willingly took it on Himself on the cross, so that we can experience His comfort.
This is a beautiful book, with a moving hardcover design outside. The pages look like parchment inside and are embellished with calligraphy lines of Scriptures that coincide with the message in the text. It would make a great gift--particularly for someone whose world has been shattered and life makes no sense.
This is a deeply thought-provoking book, both for committed Christian people and non-Christians alike. Bruce Marchiano probes the depts of suffering, from the tragedy of 9/11, to other personal tragedies and serious setbacks in life. He also reflects on various people Jesus encountered in the New Testament, and his reaction and, often solution, to their suffering. In each case, he compares the suffering that Jesus endured, backed up with the reassurance that Jesus understands each one, and can empathise. Whilst many see Jesus simply as a historical figure and great teacher who was martyred, Bruce Marchiano also sees his humanity, and concentrates on the fact that he has gone before us. We often have deep tragedies that we do not understand, and this book may go some way to providing comfort to those seeking it.
Right now if you need a read with the Hope we need, read this book! Jesus loves us. He knows what it is like to be us, He walked this earth for 33 years and experienced all that we do. Jesus wept! Give Him a chance to show His love for you.
The author reminds us to never doubt that Jesus, being fully man and fully God, knows heartache and loss and He weeps for us all in our tragedies. Highly recommended.
This book is small and kind of 'gifty' - the kind you put in your bathroom or on a table in your livingroom. Its a breezy read and encourages anyone who is suffering to place their focus upon Jesus. It is an encouraging read, worthwhile for those who are looking for something to read a few pages at a time during a period of loss or depression. I prefer books by Max Lucado, etc. - but its not bad.
