Since her first adventure into Winsome, Poppy has encountered magic and power greater than she had ever imagined. But, what will happen when evil finds its way into the human world? In this exciting final installment of The Gloom Trilogy, Poppy finds herself in the Dregs, a run-down industrial park with danger lurking around every corner. Somewhere hidden in this wasteland of factories and warehouses is an old foe of Winsome, who has eluded her twice before. Here, Poppy must put an end to this terrible force for once and for all, before both Winsome and the human world fall victim to her enemy’s dreadful magic.
Piper Lee Kelley was born in a small suburb of one of America's largest cities. Although the beach was a mere block from her home, she still harbors a general distaste for sand and ocean water. Since her father hated to drive, her explorations in the city were relegated to walking, usually barefoot. Growing up without television or even a phone, Piper relied on her creative mind to conjure elaborate fantasies, which propel her work to this day.
She moved away from the beach around the age of 25. She misses it terribly, but the loss came with the gain of a wonderful family of her own. Piper has been with her husband for 10 years and, along with two wonderful children and two obnoxious cats, she now spends her time in the suburbs of a much smaller city. Her cats spend their time cuddling up with her laptop.
In Piper’s debut novels, she explores the nature of family, love, forgiveness, and bravery.
This is the third and final part of the series, Just when everyone thinks the danger has passed an old enemy shows up with one final plot for revenge, but this time he takes his battle out of Winsome and into the human world. I really liked the flip on sides seeing the characters from the fairy land coming into our world and Poppy being the one at ease, it was an interesting change to the group dynamic and I enjoyed seeing how they adapted to it. Once again we have Poppy, Brady, Gus and Peregrine involved and I liked seeing the growing relationship between Peregrine and Poppy, they are overcoming the past and starting to really get to know each other. I also liked to see Brady and Poppy grow closer, you just know they are meant to be together. The world was very well built and described, the Dregs are in our world, an abandoned warehouse lot full of creepy homeless people, burnt out cars and empty buildings, really quite creepy and I could totally picture it all. I kept expecting someone crazy to jump out at the characters, it builds the tension well. We see Poppy change the most over this book, both in the way she looks at her relationships with her mum, little sister, dad and even with Augusta and Brady. You see her grow up and come to think about things a bit more, she tries to cling onto some things, but ultimately she is prepared to do what is necessary. I found this to be an exciting conclusion to the series, again it's short at about 140 pages and it only took me an hour to read but that hour like the one before it flew by.
This is a great fantasy series for children, great fun and quirky characters will capture imaginations.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Piper Kelley.) This is the third book in the ‘Gloom’ trilogy, and picks up not long after ‘The Doldrums’ left off. Poppy is back in the human world, and dealing with her younger sister Daisy who still thinks that Poppy talks to the tree in the garden. Poppy has a new problem though, and something much more difficult than distracting Daisy – she has wings! Poppy has been worried about growing wings since she found out her mother was a fairy, but she’s not ready to leave her human life and live in Winsome yet! Another adventure awaits Poppy though, this time in the human world. Darius is still determined to have Poppy’s mother (Perigreen) for himself, and has kidnapped Poppy’s parents in an attempt to get Perigreen to turn herself over. Can Poppy rescue her Dad and step-Mom in time? And can she save Perigreen from Darius once and for all?
This book was a wonderful end to the trilogy, with more adventures for Poppy, and a real ending to the story. All the old favourite characters made an appearance, and things were finally settled between Poppy, her parents, and her faerie life. This series has really been a magical fairy-tale adventure, perfect for middle graders and adults alike. 6.5 out of 10.
OK, let's just get to it- LOVED it. I'm just going to personally thank Piper for giving this trilogy a fitting finale. Truly. Every loose end in the entire trilogy is closed up. We find out what happens to Poppy in her fairy versus human family, we find Howard and his family again (yay!), we have a great, action filled ending. And I can't tell you whether the enemy is defeated, whether Poppy stays in the human world or the fairy world, does her mom reconcile with her dad (so glad this story line was put in there, by the way), and what happens with Brady. I can't tell you any of that without spoiling it for you.
But part of me kind of hopes that there is more. I know it was only meant to be a trilogy, but I'd like to see Poppy in say... 5 years. What happens to Poppy within the royal family she comes from? What about her and Brady?
So here's what I'm saying: Get this trilogy. You will like all three books and if you're an avid reader like me, you can probably get the entire trilogy done over the course of a weekend. I absolutely encourage you check out Piper Kelley- I look forward to her future books because she is a fabulous talent that will only get better.
I was anxious to read this book to see how the author tied up all the loose ends of characters. I am happy to report she did a beautiful job. All the questions I had were answered.
This book might be my favorite one. It was full of action and emotion. I often found myself in a hurry to find out what happens next.
As usual Poppy is torn between her two worlds. Her parents in the end do what is best for their daughter.
I would love to spend some time in Winsome. The way the author describes the castle and the land, you can actually picture it in your mind.
