I read this for Grad school, but I have seen it on the shelves of some colleagues, so I wanted to finish it after the semester. This book was written by some pretty incredible people in the Historic House Museum field, and they cohesively created a plan that other museums could follow when starting from the ground up. Any museum professional should read this, but keep in mind a lot needs to be updated as so much as changed for many of these museums.
I think if this is a book for you, you probably already know it from the title. If you do not do any interpreting of historic house museums, you should probably steer clear of this book. If, however, you are frequently interpreting historic house museums, this is a very handy book to have. There are all kinds of different essays in here: how to improve tours, different kinds of tours, how to work in the landscape, how to tell more effective stories about people, etc, etc. Public Historians should keep it on the bookshelf. Incidentally, the late, lamented Astors' Beechwood is a case study in one of the chapters. I miss my fellow Beechwoodians. I often feel nostalgic for 1891.
The professional essays in this collection reassess historic house interpretation, toward making it physically, intellectually, and emotionally accessible to visitors. This transition involves a more away from object-centric interpretation toward people-centric interpretation, that considers and interprets meaningful issues and events, rather than static materiality in a rigid chronology, making use of the great and more meaningful story a site has to tell. This conceptualizes historic houses as places of education and engagement.
