“I want to save you as much as I want to kill you.”
They are words Dr Angela Hawthorne can’t stop thinking about. Especially because they were whispered into her ear by a rebel Mafia prince in the throes of passion.
But she doesn’t need saving. And she doesn’t fear death. She isn’t the high society princess she appears to be.
She isn’t afraid of Roman, nor his reputation. Not even when he kidnaps her and gives her an ultimatum: take the money or take the bullet.
Hell, she wanted to lick him all over. So, she reached for the button on his jeans, only to be brought up short by his calloused hand over her own. "Nope, Tonight is just for you. Let me adore you."

So I began to read this book because I saw a TikTok about it, and I thought to myself "hey, it seems cool enough to read on my phone, time to get my Kindle back and read books I'm more interested in". And boy was I WRONG 😂😍. This book was worth waiting to be read on my Kindle but too late now, I devoured it non-stop till this morning!
First, the heroine, Angela : 1️⃣ she's a trauma doctor (go girl) 2️⃣ she's a badass survivor, fights for herself, no tears in sight. She's the woman of steel. 3️⃣ she's on the curvy side (those are rare in Booktok, I appreciate it when I fumble into one) 4️⃣ she's 39 ! (yes I'm 25 but I didn't even realize that maybe I'm a little tired of barely-of-age women in mafia romance) 5️⃣ she's older than the hero (that also, is very refreshing)
And Roman but also his clan are very different from what you normally see in a mafia romance. They're all kinds of golden retrievers, so sweet and adorable but if you're on their wrong side well, dogs can bite. 🤷♀️
The story is well-written and paced and the banter is incredible. I laughed, gasped, and giggled so many times, I can't count. 😂
The romance begins kind of abruptly, they're sort of love-struck but then it's a slow burn, not for the smut to begin, but for them to accept fall into a relationship that could work for them. And it's what makes the story beautiful, their love is complicated, but also patient, honest, and finally trusting.
It's so well built, they actually fell like 2 missing pieces finding each other. Even if for now, it's more Angela who's healing thanks to Roman. I'd love to see the affection being more reciprocated in the next book of the duet. But still, he's more caring thanks to her too. 💖
The smut is hot between them because the tension and attraction are very well depicted, but no dirty talk, no special kink, and no funny business, it's pretty standard sex scenes. Otherwise, they're pretty frequent and all the scenes are pretty different from each other 😉🔥
This is a dark, mysterious, smutty read and I loved it!
Angela is a Dr, she’s smart, kind, caring but has some dark secrets hidden.
Roman is a mafia prince, deadly, fierce, and will do anything to protect his found family!
I love their chemistry and connection, I was hooked and rooting for them from the beginning!
This is dark and covers alot of dark topics so please do check the trigger warnings before reading!!
This is also written in 3rd person which is not my favourite writing style but I really enjoyed this book!
I did not see the plot twists that happened at the end of the book but loved it and honestly I need to read the next book!!
Updated: I just did the audiobook as a re read and omg I’m obsessed! The narrators did an excellent job of brining the characters to life!! Its dual narration and if you read this I definitely recommend doing the audio as a reread
Angela and Roman's story was a nice one! Light and dark at the same time, easy to read and I liked it overall, even if it ended in a somewhat predictable CLIFFHANGER. My only dislike was the reverse age-gap...
4⭐️ There’s just something about mafia bosses right?! They just hit different. I feel like I love this genre and pretty much every book I’ve read in the mafia world. I love how also, most of the time in mafia romances, the FMC is really feisty and strong willed as they need to be able to handle the MMC. They treat their partners like queens and worship them which I really love in a book it just hits the spot right?!
I really loved the characters Angel is just beautiful. I love that she’s older, has an amazing career and is so driven and filled with integrity. Her gritty backstory is so interesting too. Roman is like a God oh my goodness! He’s so sweet and patient with full touch her and be ended vibes! Love.
I did the audio version. It was great Aidan Snow doesn’t really well and Michelle Sparks. I love them too together.
I found it hard to stop turning the pages!!! I loved the main characters in this book, Abel made me laugh so much he’s so funny!! Roman is definitely a new book boyfriend 🙌🔥
Well I finished it in less than 24hrs and currently on the second book. So safe to say I loved it. So funny, so cute, loveable characters, all the good words.
Silver or Lead (Book 1, Mafia for Hire) - Darcy Halifax
I was given an Arc copy of this book in order to provide an honest review.
Darcy Halifax is an Australian author who writes contemporary romance that can take on a dark twist.
Roman is the High Prince of the underground Italian Mafia – known and feared by many. By always smart enough to never be picked up by the Police. Though having legitimate businesses as well as many illegitimate businesses does certainly help with such things.
Meanwhile, Dr Angela Hawthorne is a young female trauma surgeon who is extremely good at what she does. Doesn’t hurt she has some pretty good curves on her as well.
Roman’s brother, is caught in a cross fire – their normal doctor was meant to have fixed him up – but he looks like he is dying right before his brother’s eyes. So Roman sends his men out to find a doctor to help.
So, who do they happen to pick – Dr Hawthorne. Well, more like throw a bag over her head and chuck her in the boot of their car. When the bag is removed from her head and she is confronted with the situation it takes some convincing for her to help – dark memories threaten to break through and lose control.
But she is able to pull it together and Luca will live to see another day. Yet it is not the last day she will be in Roman’s life – not if he has anything to do with it.
Now Roman sets out to make it his mission to keep her in his life – whether as a lover or has a friend – he needs to have her. Though lover is obviously the preferred choice. But in order to achieve this he needs to help her work through the barriers she has built from her past – will he be patient enough or act like a true brat prince?
“Silver or Lead” is short mafia themed romance novel that seizes the reader and takes them along for the ride. Angela is such a strong female character who really stands up for herself and sticks to her boundaries regardless of the opinions of others – something I really admire. Roman is your typical Mafia prince – strong feelings of protection and loyalty to those he considers family and is very much used to getting his own way. They say opposites shouldn’t attract but honestly – they really do. While I really enjoyed this story, I felt like some elements like needed building on such as the world could have done with slightly more fleshing out. Also, more or a backstory on Roman and Angela and some of the minor characters would have really elevated this story to another level. Nevertheless, I am still excited and eager for the next instalment in the series.
Doctor Hawthorne is kidnapped as she leaves work. It's happened before, so she knows the drill... But then she finds out the reason behind it all. She is a doctor first but he is oh so fine and she is not scared of anything. She will not fall for the handsome mafia prince with the exceptional piercing ( magic cross, anyone?) . Angela has some secrets of her own that she needs to keep secret. Roman, born into a mafia life. Born to one day, take over the empire. He needs a doctor. His brother’s life depends on it. He wasn’t expecting her. There is just something about Doctor Hawthorne, and he just can’t keep away from her. ☀︎︎☀︎︎☀︎︎☀︎︎☀︎︎ It's such an amazing read! I was hooked from the beginning. As a fan of this author under another name, ( the fabulous Montana Ash! ) I loved reading her newest venture into a totally different genre! I absolutely loved all the humour. The characters' banter is fun!
The storyline moves consistently with some twists and the introduction of some characters that you will want to take home with you :) I adore Sister Pip, Luca, Abel !! ☀︎︎Well developed characters... check. ☀︎︎Excellent comedic timing... check. ☀︎︎Captivating storyline... check. ☀︎︎ steamy, leave you panting for more, sex scenes... check, check, check! ☀︎︎bonus scene ☀︎︎book 2 can not come quick enough!!
The ONLY thing that dropped this a star was the cliffhanger at the end. It wasn’t quite enough to make me want to read book 2, but there we go. I won’t spoil it, anyway.
The plot - we’ll start off strong with: CHECK YA FUCKIN TRIGGERS PEOPLE. SOME DARK SHIT IN HERE. With that out the way, this is a mafia romance, with your enemies to lovers, forced proximity, grumpy X sunshine, all the good vibes. FMC is a surgeon, MMC is a mafia don (haha he’d hate me saying that IYKYK). FMC ends up being the crew’s doctor/surgeon, and you’vr got all the good angsty vibes in here. Smut was a 2.5/5 on the spice scale ~ HE’S GOT A PIERCED COCK I SWEAR TO GOD! It could be considered a HEA for the couple, but the underlying plot has a cliffhanger at the end. Good book, funny in parts actually I was surprised.
The MC - Angela is our badass doctor with a jaded past. I loved her attitude, her resilience and her medical expertise. Didn’t love the commitment issues and inability to trauma dump on a mafioso, but there we are. Can’t all be perfect.
The male counterpart - Roman is our MMC with a pierced schlong and knows how to use it. Love his angsty past, love how he’s got a bit of a hero complex, and doesn’t stand for shit. Dark, grumpy, broody and possessive. You can’t tell me you won’t fall in love with him.
So good. Finally, a mafia book where it's not insta love, marriage, or pregnancy. This was so well written that we got a bit of everything. Slow burn but still some spice along the way, time jumps (so it was over like 6 months, not 2 days), action, mafia brutality, softness, and great side characters. Angela (angel) is a strong FMC (shocking, i know), she is a surgeon with a terrible past that is a mystery for most of the book. She doesn't trust anyone, so she keeps our MMC at a distance. Roman is your typical morally grey mafia boss/billionaire but also has some mystery to him. His chosen family are a group of lovable idiots who are also scary if on the wrong side. I loved that the group assassin was a female as well. This is a duet, so it does end on a cliffhanger but not a dramatic one, just enough for you to want the next part. **Heavy triggers though: Mafia brutality including graphic torture, Non consensual Drugging which lead to attempted rape, descriptions of human trafficking and the services she was sold to do, mentions of dog fighting and kitten meanness. 💯recommend this story. I was so sceptical going in, since it was a tik tok find, and I have been burnt a lot, but it's actually really good.
Dr Angela Hawthorne is a trauma surgeon in a busy hospital, after finishing a 12 hour shift she’s heading home when she gets kidnapped next to her car. Bagged and tied she’s dumped in the trunk of a different car and taken. Determined not to be a victim again, when they reach their destination she fights back. After all there are so many things worse than death.
Even threatened with death she stands her ground, she’s been brought in front of the infamous ‘Rebel Mafia Prince’, Vincenzo Romano. He needs her to help his only brother. Eventually she does but on her own terms. From that point onwards Roman is drawn to the apparently fearless doctor. The chemistry between them is off the charts, but Roman has a difficult path ahead, she wants nothing to do with him.
Such an amazing story, it’s very well paced, the pairing of the two main characters whilst unlikely comes across as genuine and organic. The surrounding cast of characters are well rounded and relatable. The good doctor has a dark secret hidden in her past, and a man from that dark time has just finished a business meeting with Roman. It’s left her wondering if she made the wrong choice. Answers coming in book two! Well worth reading.
I'm currently recovering from being sick and on a really weird sleep schedule, so I'm on a reading spree. My mom pulled a signed copy (wayy too cool!🫣) of this book from her shelf, offered it to me to keep me entertained, and said, "Let's see how long it takes you to finish it.😝" I read the whole thing in maybe half a day, only taking meal breaks. I am thoroughly hooked, and Darcy Halifax, I have so many questions for you lol!! I am 100% invested in this series now, and can't wait to see what happens with the rest of the duets.
So far, Roman and Angel have a soft spot in my heart as a new power couple... but I honestly think Abel and Claire might be my it pair??! Everyone in this series, down to our furry friends who join at the end, have become a beloved character in my list of book besties...
I love that Angel is strong and not a complete damsel in distress, and I love that she finds people she can rely on throughout the book. The secrets of the main characters' past kept me curious until the end, and the romance was a nice slow burn despite all the tension! The last few chapters had me *stressed*, relieved, and then finally shocked by the last line of the book... I will absolutely be back to find out more!

OMG I loved it!! I’m going to reread it right now. All the characters are fantastic, deliciously violent and hilarious.
It’s somewhat of a slow burn as Angela is reluctant to get involved with Roman. Doesn’t mean there isn’t spice. I really liked how Roman was patient but still pursuing Angela while she was working on her issues. He knew when to come on stronger and when to back off. It was a much more balanced and realistic approach to a relationship then the insta-love trope. While at times I wanted to shake Angela, once you find out what actually happened to her, it makes so much more sense. She’s a strong woman who doesn’t put up with crap but is also self aware in that she knows some of her behaviour is a trauma response and can hurt people. The big thing is that when someone calls her out on her behaviour, she actually takes the criticism very well and then works to improve.
All the side characters are fantastic and add so much life to the story.
I really loved this book and can’t wait for the next one. I hope it comes out soon!!
I wish angel just put up more of a fight like I rlly enjoyed their relationship but at some point it just felt like she was such a pushover. Like all the mmc’s friends r like ur driving him crazy but pretty much every time he would be like I want u, she’d fold and have sex with him. Like idk. Also for all this dude being big and bad and mafia man…this mf like tried to ban drugs. Like I can no longer take u serious I’m sorry. I rlly feel like there was so much potential with them but like it was squandered with like him being too much of “morally grey” like mf u kill ppl for fun but draw the line at drugs. I can kinda get behind the mafia guys who r like yeah I will kill u if u disrespect women in anyway but like a anti drugs mafia man let’s be fr. Idk I get it’s all unrealistic but for me I need elements of realism for me to buy into the book. It is like a bunch of tropes that I think r very loved by booktok like he falls first, touch her and you die, found family idk there’s a lot of fun stuff in this like there’s gay mafia mfs like slayyyy. But idk I wish other things were done better
4.5⭐ 3🌶️ What can one say bout Roman and Angela's story except "accattivante" (captivating) The relationship between trauma surgeon Dr Angela Hawthorne (Angel) and Vincenso Romano (Roman aka the Rebel Mafia Prince), was electric, and their "family" were equally captivating. Every character had their own well developed, although tragic, backstory woven into the main storyline seamlessly and every character was vital to the story. Who knew that an intense, action packed, mafia romance could also be laugh out loud funny??? I found myself cackling at several spots throughout both books, which goes to show just how loveable the characters were!!!
Tropes: Enemies to lovers, Opposites attract, older woman/younger man, kidnapping to love, billionaire romance, found family, chosen family vs blood family Triggers: kidnapping, human trafficking, stalking, bullying, sexual assault/rape, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty, vomiting, mental health issues, death, gore/violence, medical procedures, blood, paedophilia, needles, gaslighting, torture, gun violence, panic attacks/anxiety, PTSD, fire/burning
Loved this book. Not my usual genre but I’m so excited to see where the next book takes me. Great characterisation that makes you want to be a part of this family.
Angela. Doctor Hawthorne is kidnapped on her way out of work. She knows the drill. She’s been here before. She’s got this. But then she finds out the reason behind it all. She is a doctor first but he is oh so fine and she is not scared of anything. She will not fall for the handsome mafia prince with the exceptional piercing. Roman. Born into a mafia life. Born to one day takeover the empire. He needs a doctor. His brother’s life depends on a doctor. He wasn’t expecting her. There is just something about doctor Hawthorne and he just can’t keep away.
Such an amazing read. I was hooked from the beginning. Loads of humour and packed full from start to finish. Loved it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Silver Or Lead by Darcy Halifax is a dark, intense romance that pulls readers into a world of danger, passion, and moral ambiguity. Dr. Angela Hawthorne’s unlikely romance with the rebel Mafia prince, Roman, is electric from the start. The tension between them is palpable as Roman kidnaps Angela and presents her with an ultimatum: take the money or take the bullet. Despite the stakes, Angela is no helpless damsel—she's strong, smart, and refuses to be controlled, even as their chemistry boils over. The mix of passion and danger creates an intoxicating atmosphere, but it’s Roman’s complex character, straddling the line between villain and antihero, that makes this book a compelling read. There’s a slight sense of repetition as Angela constantly grapples with her attraction to Roman, but their dynamic is undeniably magnetic. The plot's fast-paced twists keep readers on edge, though some may wish for deeper character exploration in parts. Overall, it’s a thrilling and fiery journey with a satisfying balance of suspense and romance.
Having read a few Mafia books I thought I knew what I was going to read but nope not this time, this tops every other mafia book I have read. I loved Roman, his rag tag family as well as Angel and the relationships they all have. The amount of laugh out louds, shaking my head in frustration or rolling of eyes through out this book due to Roman, Angela or Romans rag tag family and Miss Pip makes you love them all so much more. The slow burn between Angela an Roman melts your heart as Roman see's there is more to Angel and her history and knows she needs to decide to be his, however that doesn't stop him making sure he is in her orbit and tied to him in some way. I absolutely love the world created for this series along with all the characters and potential future couples are hinted at so I am counting down till the next book just like a kid with Christmas!!
This story was amazing. Loved watching Angela thaw to Roman over the length of the book. And even more so thaw and Come to care for his whole crew and family. You could tell that she was numb and in need of love, friendship and family. The banter between all of the characters was hilarious and really drew you into the story with the way you got drawn into the story. Finding out about Angela’s past, and how horrific everything she endured was made the story that much more powerful in her overcoming everything that had happened. I loved how Roman, who was this hardened criminal and heir to two mafia families fell hard and fast for the doctor. And even more so you couldn’t help but love him and his patience for all he did for her and waiting for her to catch up to him. Can’t wait for the next book.
This book was basically perfect. Holy moly. I pretty much loved everything about it.
I’m a character driven reader and I could gush about all the ones in this book forever. All the characters were absolutely amazing. They were all so badass but dorky at the same time, strong but with hearts of gold, morally gray but so endearing. Incredibly lovable. Compared to so many other mafia romance books, the main mafia men in this were so down to earth and open about their feelings. They weren’t above showing their love for each other. Friendship, familial and romantic love. And they all seemed so real. So perfectly imperfect. I mean… big bad mafia men getting chickenpox? I laughed so many times while reading.
And there were so many beautiful moments too. Also dark ones.
And special shoutout to Sister Pip. She was 100% the real mvp.
I’ve had this on my TBR for far too long. This story is not your “usual” mafia romance, it’s a love story of two damaged souls. I loved the visualisation in these words, each scene was well thought out and not rushed. Personally, loved how fantastic the torture scenes were - equal parts of great dialogue and descriptive action. They were graphic but didn’t go too overboard with length. Too often, I find that authors skip these scenes, but its necessary for a great mafia book.
In saying that, if you are easily triggered, please be wary of CW’s.
This book, to me, is not super spicy but those few scenes are absolute gold. This is definitely a “less is more” kind of deal.
Dark romance, such as crime and mafia is not my regular go to trope but I must say I loved every moment of this story. The added so much more to this story around the dark areas, so funny at times I chuckled my way through the book. Dr Hawthorne was kidnapped, her services needed. She was furious, already carrying past baggage she wasn't as scared as most would be. Roman was a businessman, known as the mafia prince. Although he would kill to get his way he still had a heart and it softened for this doctor. In between the drama this had all the feels. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this book.
Started off very interesting with a kidnapping of our heroine. I enjoyed the story overall, but nowhere did it state this was a duet. I'm not sure I want to read another 500 pg book about Roman getting retribution for Angela. This book had interesting characters (even if the big, bad mafia dudes did sound un-big&bad at times) and I like that Roman was very, very patient with Angela (although she was trying my patience with her I can't go there nonsense). All of the characters were a family and they definitely protected their own. The writing flowed well and did enjoy it, so maybe I will download the next book & check it out.
This is the first time I have read this author. I really thought I was going to enjoy this story. I liked the premise of the book. I am not an author by any means, but I thought the story could have been told differently. Explanation about Angela had went through earlier in the book. More about Claire. It felt like the dance between Roman and Angela went on too long without explanations. When we finally hear about what happened to Angela it felt rushed. I had a very hard finishing the book.
I've been reading dud after dud of mafia romance books but this one felt like a breathe of fresh air. Was it perfect? No. Did I want to strangle the MFC? Also no.
The story starts with our MFC getting kidnapped so she can help save the life of the MMC's brother.
I know it may not be everyone's cup of tea but I do love her inability to commit until the very end. But her relationship with the other characters was really great.
Can't wait for the second book!

Roman is the bad boy everyone wants but he only has eyes for her and will do anything to keep her safe. Angela tries to keep her distance and that just builds the tension.
This debut book is laugh out loud funny, has some serious hot scenes and will leave you wanting more. Especially with the way it ends.
Highly recommended! Also, keep some time free once you start because you’re going to read it one sitting.
Darcy has jumped into the Mafia scene with an amazing debut novel Her character's you will either love or hate them personally I love them Heart string will be tugged and the more you read the better you will understand the personalities of each character's And the ending with have you guessing as to who it was and what the he'll he was there for Perfect Looking forward to reading more
