An oversized collection of early strips by the creator of the long-running Underworld, including "Delirious," "Zombies on Broadway," and multiple installments of "TOT," "Vamp Dance," and "C.P. Grimsley."
Far younger than I should have, I received The New Comics Anthology for Christmas one year from a family friend. I thought it was mostly pretty weird and gross, and it made me feel weird and gross, so I put it aside...for about twenty years.
But on a recent visit home, I picked it up and realized it was a bit of a goldmine -- a complete primer for the major comix creators of the 70's and 80's. My all-time favorite strip in the collection, even as a young Keith, was 'Zombies on Broadway,' a two-page bit of expertly-plotted and designed punk noir involving a mix up of rat poison and cough syrup in a nightmare cityscape that I now understand to likely be the creepy Hoboken/New York City amalgam where Kaz sets all of his work.
Anyway, it was literally like two weeks ago that it suddenly occurred to me that I should look for more Kaz comics. But who the hell was this Kaz guy? I googled him and found a website of stuff with an entirely different style. So where was the old stuff? The 'good' stuff?
I checked the New Comics Anthology bio section, and found mention of this book. The internet said a copy of it usually went for about a thousand dollars. I tried spelling Buzz Bomb as two words instead of one. A couple copies came up for twenty bucks each. I ordered one and the seller wrote back that they actually didn't have it. I ordered the other.
It came just a few days later in a giant horking box. The internet doesn't tell you that this thing is 11x17. Who the hell would make a book like that?
I mean, Kaz would, motherfucker. Fuckin' Kaz.
This book still makes me feel gross and weird, but these days that's the only way I can feel good anymore.
An oversized book of Kaz comics, kind of like a very tall magazine. It makes for a pretty wild ride. I don't always like his humour, but even when the stories don't hit the art is really something pretty.
