Book 2 of the Ringdweller Series takes off where book one left off. This fantasy series has a lot of interesting twists and turns. I can’t figure out which side I’m supporting, the Ring Dwellers or the Shamans. Any chance for peace seems to lie with Migo and Katsi but some of the things they do don’t seem to be working. Things I learned from this book: the Shamans all have different types of magic. Katsi is a stormcatcher, one of the most powerful Shamans. However, it seems silver weakens their power. Hmmm. And if I was King Migo, I don’t know if I would give a Shaman some of my blood. Doesn’t seem smart. So Migo wants to know who killed his father and Katsi wants to develop her powers. They seem to be fated to work together too. I like Migo’s cousin, Hatan. He is so loyal to his cousin, the King. And we are introduced to Alyssad. He becomes really important to the story. Be ready for a cliff hanger too. The King appears to be cursed. Book 3 is released in a couple days. Can’t wait! There is no spice in this series so it’s great for teens and adults. I’m having so much fun with these books.

I want to thank the author, Brady Hunsaker, for a copy of his ebook. This review is of my own opinions and freely given.

I have to start by saying that this book got me out of the reading slump Iron Flame left me in, which is no easy thing to do! 🙊🥳

I liked this part better than the previous book (Scorned Prince). Mainly because it had way more mystery and action, and I love how the relationship between Migo and Katsi evolved.

After the events in book 1, Migo and Katsi both set out on a journey to find who killed Migo's father and oh, to prevent a war between the shaman and the other ringdwellers. It is a very easy read, without overly long or complex worldbuilding l. It focuses on action and story instead of romance, and the way the story is told it keeps you guessing about who you can trust and who is going to be the "bad guy" (or girl 😉). Whilst reading this book, I kept coming up with new theories , and I really liked how, in the end, everything came together (in a MAJOR cliffhanger😍🤣).

Cursed King
Brady Hunsaker
The Ringdweller Series
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Clean Fantasy. Slow Burn. Magic. Secrets.
Revenge. Betrayal. Salvation.

The tides of Malahem are changing. A prince now crowned King concealing secrets of his own. A shaman weighing the violent cost of peace and her own pacifist nature. A darkness burning beneath the surface and the tendrils of ancient hidden magic reaching into every corner of Jehubal.
A magnetic pull between Migo and Katsi is undeniable but loyalties are tested as their feelings just blossomed at the end of Scorned Prince.

This series is beyond worth every second and deserves so much praise. I'm thankful to @bradyhunsaker for both BETA and ARCs of Cursed King. And secondly for creating such a memorizing and unforgettable series that I will say forever 13 year old me would love this as much as 34 year old me.

To say that I love this series is the understatement of the year. Something about Brady's storytelling is so captivating and open for all readers. The themes are so realistically complex and heavy but the ability to convey politics, development and magic in a way that is light and refreshing.
Scorned Prince is a stellar debut with a wonderful foundation and yet Cursed King further expands on these beloved characters and then flips everything in a 180 and leaves this cliffhanger that can only be described as an all consuming void.

The theories behind where Migo, Katsi, Hatan and Scales end up are just swirling around. Complete with fast paced action, amazing banter, the sweetest slow burn romance and a plethora of valuable side characters. Cursed King manages to take every subplot and point it all back at the reader where you cannot help but overanalyze how this all fit in under 300 pages.

If you are a fantasy lover, go meet Migo and Katsi they are everything my millennial heart loves. Cursed King keeps you guessing on the edge of your seat and practically rioting at the end. Go read Ringdweller. Launches on KU and Amazon Sept 28.

ARC reading

My review might be confusing, but bare with me. I really struggled to figure out how many stars to give this book as I recognize its a YA fantasy novel, and follow up to the first title, Scorned Prince.

I'll start with the ick...
I struggled to take the book seriously because of a few flaws I thought were glaring.
The magic in the world is great (very cool, in fact!), but doesn't seem to follow any hard rules. It just exists without consequences (other than people being afraid of those with ultimate power). One of the two protagonists is just learning how to yield their shaman powers. What is bizarre is she seems to figure out and call upon her powers almost immediately. The story reads like... "oh can I do this one thing that no one has told me I could do and i've never seen anyone do"... tries once "ooo it might work"... tries twice [nails it]. Usually people would take at least a few days of practice to excel at the magic Katsi is able to call upon. The only "explanation" that seems to emerge is that she's "special" and there hasn't been a Shaman as powerful as her in years.
Tied into the narrative flaws in the world's magic, is that sometimes the author over explains what's going on, while other times, the reader is expected to just accept what's happening.
Spoiler- at one point the emperor saves Katsi from being killed .. in a hide out... I got hung up here because there is no logical reason a) the emperor would know Katsi was nearby, and b) the emperor would know she needed help. I managed to logic my way around how other magic yielders were possibly saved without the perpetrators being killed (I didn't think it was quite as important to the narrative as the emperor somehow able to just show up at the right place at the right time for Katsi).
The book is mostly predictable (not sure if that is a good thing or not- some might enjoy this). I was able to guess cliff hangers, and groan at how certain characters walked into [obvious?] traps laid by their enemies.
There is also no prose in this book... (again, not sure if this is a good thing or not- some might enjoy this). The conversations between Migo and Katsi are decent and mostly realistic, but dialogue breaks down during conversations with any other character in the story.
There is also a major McGuffin (just learned this term)...and I feel really bad about this... but 1/3 of the story is told through the perspective of Migo's cousin. Why I can't recall his name even though he takes up much of the book, and is used as a way to move the plot forward (or at least keep tabs on Migo's kingdom while he is off seeking answers and revenge), I have no clue. But yeah. I have to go look that up now... (It's Hatan)
I also struggled with the realism around how trusting the protagonists are of ... well everyone. Migo and Katzi both have experienced abuse and neglect by those closest to them (particularly adults). Yet they take the word of all adults for face value, even if they question motives. In this sense, I found the motivations and plot naïve (but possibly not a terrible thing for a YA novel...this is just my opinion). I would have thought some major attachment issues would emerge from their life experiences.

BUT despite all of my complaining above... I did finish the book and I look forward to the 3rd installment (ha!). How is this so, you ask? I have no freaking clue! Which is why I struggled with the stars. Despite all of the pieces that drove me bananas while reading the book, the majority of the characters were engaging and interesting! I was still invested in finding out what happened to Migo and Katsi as they are flying around the world. Compared to the last book (which primarily stayed in one to two areas of this world's planet), there is a TON more action and adventure; the characters travel from the scorched desert to the frozen wasteland (ooo stars! I didn't even consider prior to this book that a Tidal locked planet would only be able to see the stars from the back half of the world!), and north to the grand silver capital. There is some reference to politics; there is murder; there is "mystery" (at least for the characters); and there are surprises.
Oh and everyone's favourite critter is back, SCALES! And he's more awesome than we all anticipated.
My personal opinion, the best chapter in the book is when Migo and Katsi visit the academy. I will not elaborate :p

3/5 stars...maybe 3.5/5 stars.
note: I've started books listed at high 4 stars out of 5 (from Good Reads), and they end up being DNF on my shelf. I DID finish Cursed King, and even made a oooooooo sound after reading the last line. Do with that knowledge what you will.

Thank you to the author Brady Hunsaker for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

CURSED KING is the second book of Hunsaker’s trilogy THE RINGDWELLER SERIES. It primarily follows Katsi and Migo, both on a quest to find answers. Katsi wishes to learn more about her Shaman powers while Migo is trying to solve his late father’s murder. Their paths cross, and together they face action and adventure, their ultimate goal the same: peace.

The book is fast paced and allows the reader to get a much deeper glimpse into the magical world of Malahem. New characters are introduced, beloved sidekicks return (Scales forever!), and new places are explored.

Like SCORNED PRINCE, I enjoyed the unique and immersive world building, the intriguing magic system, and the fast-paced plot. Also, that cliffhanger at the end! Well done!

My rating for CURSED KING is 3.5 stars. Again, as with the first book, there were a couple of things I personally didn’t vibe with so much.

My favorite character of the book was by far Hatan! When can we have a few of his pastry recipes?!

Brady Hunsaker is an amazing author. The ringdweller series is more unique than any book I have read in a long time! It is suspenseful and fast-paced. You won't get bored reading this book. I appreciated learning more about the characters and watching them further develop. As I read, I had this sense of panic, "When is everything going to go awry? Who is going to be a traitor? Is it them? Them?" It kept me on the edge of my seat. I kept feeling like I couldn't trust anyone. We will see how that plays out in book 3.

I appreciate that there isn't meaningless fluff in these books. Every chapter is short and to the point. It makes for a fast read and maintains your interest.

I continued to be in awe of the world building throughout book 2. It is unique, thorough, and creative.

Warning the book does end on a cliffhanger, so be prepared for that. I can't wait for book 3.

A fast-paced action-packed sequel that lives up to its predecessor! While the first book of this series begins with a black-and-white divide between shamans and ringdwellers, things get more complicated as the layers of history start to get peeled back.

Be warned, this book has a diabolical cliffhanger at the end, so be sure to have the third book ready to read!

I don't know if it's just me, but Hunsaker's writing seems to grow more sophisticated in this book while remaining easy to read and not getting unnecessarily fluffy. Parts of the plot made me raise an eyebrow because they seemed a little inconsistent. There were also aspects of the main characters that I wanted developed or at least explained more, like the motivation behind Katsi's desire to be a shaman. It seems she's simply enamored with her own power, which is all well and good, but I wanted a deeper emotional center to her motivation. In the first book, she's driven by her pacifism and her desire to honor her parents and protect as many lives as possible, but in this book, she doesn't seem to have a center anymore. And maybe that's kind of the point, that she's lost herself a little and hasn't re-defined herself yet.

There is a point in the story where Migo notices this, where he realizes that she seems to be more and more obsessed with her power and he's wondering if her motives are purely selfish, so the story seems self-aware about the shift taking place. But it still felt a little too jarring for me to see her character make such a significant shift from the first book and not seem more conflicted.

OKAY. THERE WE GO.

If you read my review for Scorned Prince, you know that I felt book 1 was lacking in a few places.

Mainly the plot.

I mentioned at the end of that review that I would come back after reading book 2 and I did.

What a shift!

Book 2 picks up right where Book 1 left off. Migo is officially begun king, but the kingdom is far from peaceful. Tensions between the Shamans and Ringdwellers are still high. Migo entrusts his cousin, Hatan, to maintain stability while he and Katsi travel to the emperor’s palace to try and discover the truth behind his father’s assassination.

I loved the multi-POV in this book. It allows us to learn more about Hatan (one of my favorite characters), as he traverses the politics of being second-in-line to the throne behind the young Migo. Meanwhile, we get to see Migo and Katsi develop their relationship and grow in their respective powers.

Truly an entertaining story, I breezed through this and enjoyed it. I can’t wait for Book 3!

Thank you to the author for providing an ebook of the Cursed King and for the arc of Broken Empire.

Review coming shortly for that one!

This was one of those books I couldn’t put down until I finished reading it! I loved the character development for the main and side characters. I do wish we spent more time training with Katsi, instead of just hearing about her training on her own. She basically just had to practice a skill once in order to master it, which was hard to believe. Hopefully the next book includes more of her training! The slow burn and mutual pining between Katsi and Migo was perfectly written! I’m looking forward to the final book and I’m eager to see how Hunsaker completes everything.

Side note: had to stop at a bakery and get some goodies after reading because Hatan made his sound SO good.

"Cursed King" by Brady Hunsaker is a wonderful continuation of his clean epic fantasy, which began with "Scorned Prince." Not surprisingly, Hunsaker delivers a fast-paced story with a slow burn, great and capable characters, and a fascinating and entirely unique world.

I had (of course) hoped Katsi and Migo would cross paths, and it seems fate wants to pit them against each other. Their entire society is magic-wielders against non-magic-wielders, their entire education one of hate and intolerance. But Katsi and Migo know there is a better way, and they will find it. Although their goals don't always align, their lives and destinations invariably collide. Katsi seeks knowledge, and Migo seeks peace.

Can they reach the emperor before the dark forces of the world overcome their home? Who is the enemy? And what are they willing to sacrifice to save each other and the rest of Malahem?

I thoroughly enjoy Hunsaker's YA fantasy and am utterly grateful to be part of his beta team. Can't wait to read the next one!

As Katsi escapes Jehubal following the dramatic events at the end of Scorned Prince, Migo's path lies quite clearly ahead of him: his main priority is peace, and this will be the message sent out to the city at his coronation. Something he needs to get out there and out of the way without delay, so that he can pursue the truth about his father's assassination and bring the culprit(s) to justice.
Meanwhile, Katsi returns to her tribe to be greeted as a hero. Although Migo and Katsi share their vision of freedom from war and unity among Ringdwellers regardless of their shamanic status, Katsi's ultimate objective is also to learn the full extent of her powers and how to master these. When it becomes apparent that her tribe is ill equipped to be able to be of much help, she tracks down the mysterious lone shaman she encountered in the caves, who may help her, in exchange of a mission involving the last thing Katsi would want to do, but which she sees as the necessary means to the end of gaining knowledge and unlocking the power that she feels will benefit the greater good.
Having left his cousin Hatan in charge of Jehubal, Migo pursues the only lead available to him to solve the mystery of his father’s demise. Once again, he collides with Katsi, in a situation that forces him to put aside any immediate reaction he might have to the scene he is faced with, led by a ruler’s wisdom far greater than what is expected of his young age, and by those deeply rooted feelings for the young shaman assassin standing in front of him, no matter how fearful he is of acknowledging these.
As Migo and Katsi set off to far flung corners of Malahem in search of answers, they will encounter powers and dangers that will threaten their existence to the very core of their humanity, in ways they would never have thought possible.

As this is the second book of the series, the story and action hit the ground running.
Although a great deal of background and world building went into the first book, Cursed King has no shortage of landscapes and backdrops so far unseen. As the MCs find a quick way to travel across greater distances, this unlocks the full spectrum of the planet.
The writing is stunningly melodious, with euphonious language that adds a layer of richness and depth to the imagery. I could just picture stars in the dusk of the Frozen Waste and the moon in the twilight sky at the edge of the Ring. The new cities are well illustrated, and the scenery is beautifully vivid.

The story is written in short chapters and short sentences, which make it a flowy and snappy read. I caught myself consciously having to slow down the pace of my reading, to be able to savour the beauty of the writing. This was an arduous task, as the pace of the action and story made me desperate to gulp this book down in one bite.

The volume of new locations is equally matched by character building and again, Brady perfectly manages to balance the challenging task of introducing a large number of new characters, giving them sufficient depth and dimension to allow the reader to figure them out, while adding more layers to the existing ones. One thing I really love about this series is how well characters’ arcs are crafted, and how their back stories provide a satisfactory explanation for their behaviours, actions, and thoughts. This makes them wonderfully believable and the third person narration from different points of view allowed me to fully immerse myself into different storylines and to care about the characters. On the other hand, there is enough intrigue to make you guess (and fear) everyone's motive and true nature at every turn.

The slow burn is just delicious and I personally welcome the lack of any real ‘action’, due to the MCs very young age. As much as I am rooting for them, I can only see this resolving in one of two ways: a Lyra and Will situation, which I’m not sure my already shattered heart could cope with all over again, or a time jump to a few years into the future. No spoilers, this is just my own speculation.

Where the title of the first book in the series, Scorned Prince, is evident from the beginning, ‘Cursed King’ hangs over your head like an ominous axe waiting to swing until that very final scene. And holy mother of cliffhangers, am I glad that the wait for the next book isn’t going to do a George R. R. Martin on me.

Cursed King releases on 28 September and the fist book in the series, Scorned Prince is available now. If you love fantasy, then Ringdweller is a series you will not regret picking up.
For full disclosure, I received an ARC of Cursed King for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"Cursed King" was an enjoyable read that picks up fairly quickly from where "Scorned Prince," the first book in the Ringdweller Series, leaves us at the end. I appreciated that there wasn't a lot of dead time in between the events that ended the previous book and began this sequel, and the time that filled the space was easy to rectify within the timeline of the story. I was excited to dive back into the world that the author has created; I can't get over the unique setting of a tidally-locked planet, and I was incredibly excited to see more of the habitable areas of the planet throughout the book. I was also thrilled to see that Scales made a return to the story and was--in some ways--even more present throughout!

I feel that "Cursed King" really helped me to understand Katsi and Migo a bit more in terms of their motivations and characterizations. The progression of their relationship was more believable in this one; it had been a little fast for my personal tastes in "Scorned Prince." I really enjoyed the fact that this one seemed to slow things a bit and let the characters think about their feelings and why they were experiencing them. The whole meaningful look/passing touch aspect of their romance was very well done in my opinion, especially once they started traveling alone. Their initial tiptoeing around each other (to a degree) when interacting around others as opposed to how their communication when they were alone was very believable, especially given their ages. The tension between them had more of a subtle basis in this one (versus their diametric opposition as shaman/shaman hunter in the first book), but I enjoyed the nuances of the more subtle conflict that came with their newfound positions and the uncertainty of building something real after coming together through an intense series of events.

I was also really intrigued by the development of Katsi's powers. I feel that she caught on very quickly to her greater magical abilities, which was surprising without much training, but the way that her powers continue to be portrayed has me intrigued. The inclusion of Hatan's POV was also interesting, and I feel that it gave greater insight into the political climate of Jehubal as he navigated his regency and protecting Migo's claim to the throne. We meet a large cast of nobles through Hatan's POV, and I wish that some of those introductions would have been paced a little more slowly so I could wrap my brain around their relationship with the political climate and their roles within the realm, but as a whole, I was able to understand their role(s) in the story.

**The section ahead has quite a few spoilers, so proceed with caution:

Overall, this book was a solid 4 star read for me, and as much as I enjoyed "Scorned Prince," I loved seeing the progression of the series through "Cursed King!"

I can't wait to continue with the final installment when it comes out!

Uhm what did I just read?!
Okay so I received an ARC for an honest review and let me just say WOW! This book is significantly better than the first, I absolutely LOVED reading this book.

C H A R A C T E R S
I really like the main characters Katsi and Migo. They’re very realistic and relatable at times. I especially like Katsi, she’s very strong minded and determined. Migo is really loveable, he’s really stoic but also not at the same time. He’s a big teddy bear, but also a badass warrior. I really like seeing more character development from them. I loved the other Pov’s that were added into this book, Hatan and Nagesh. I loved being able to see what’s going on in different parts of their world and just having that extra.. entertainment (stress). I enjoyed seeing more of Hatan because I didn’t really know much about him from the first book so getting his Pov was really cool. He’s such a loveable character and also super strong, both mentally and physically. It was really good developing more understanding of his character and who he is My emotional connection to all these characters has definitely strengthened, Brady did a very good job with that. I also liked reading a bit from Nagesh’s Pov because it gave me more understanding of those type of Shamans. I love Scale’s characters and his significance in the story. There’s mystery behind what he is but at the same time we know he’s important and powerful and I really like that it shows us how Katsi’s good actions were rewarded.

W O R L D B U I L D I N G
I enjoyed seeing more of Malahem in this book through them going to different cities to uncover mysteries. I really liked getting more insight on how the different cities operate and just being able to see these new places. I really felt like I was there with them. I am a bit confused on two things though, if the sun doesn’t move around the planet and only stays over the scorched waste, how do they have night? They talked about the moon eclipsing the sun over the city of Lazeem, but that still leaves a few questions. And how do they survive the Frozen waste? It was said that miners and astronomers travel into the frozen waste but not said how they survive that cold.

R O M A N C E
Something is happening ya’ll, the sparks are flying!! Every touch sends me into a giggling frenzy and I’m waiting for the big confession in the next book. Migo is soooo obsessed guys, his Povs were one of my favourites to read. The man was in the worst amount of pain, but still pushed his hardest and protected Katsi. And I absolutely love how protective Katsi is of Migo too, like the house scene (when they stayed in his childhood friends house) In her Povs we don’t get as much swooning as with Migo, but i’m sensing a “Unknowingly in love and only realises when he’s at the brink of death” I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

P L O T
This book was so fast paced and action packed I am obsessed, though It wasn’t too fast paced as to be confusing. I really enjoyed the events in this book, I liked seeing them travel to different places and I liked having insight to what was going on in Jehubal as well as with Katsi and Migo. I loved that they were together for the whole book unlike the first one where they only met about halfway. Everything was so interesting, there was never a dull moment. There was constant mystery in this book and a whole lot of confusion to who the real villain is (which I still don’t know) There were so many twists in this book like WOAH, AND THE LAST ONE. My mind was boggled. The cliffhanger at the end of the book had me screaming, i’m so glad I have the third book at the ready.

R E C O M M E N D A T I ON
I rarely freak out as much as I did while reading this book so please go and read it. Push through the first book to read this one because you won’t regret it. The structure of the book is yet again very good, the book flows and the series of events unfold so well. Very easy to read though some things are confusing in terms of their worldly terms, I would’ve loved for there to be glossary alongside the pronunciation guide. This book series deserves more hype.

After reading "Scorned Prince" (The first book in the series) I was delighted to be included in a group of other ARC readers. I did receive this book for free but my review wasn't influenced by that. It's a solid 4 stars for me.

"Cursed King" jumps in right after "Scorned Prince" ends, and continues to build on the story. We learn that not everyone is delighted with the new ruler and along with this, Migo sets out to find who killed his father. On Katsi's side of the story, she yearns for knowledge about her new found magic skills and her path to discovery brings her once again face to face with the new king. However outside influences are determined to keep these two apart.

As these two story arcs intertwine, the reader also gets to see other characters and their development that wasn't really present in book one. And yes, Scales is still flying about and, again, needs to be protected at all costs (or will he become the protector?)

As with nearly every story, there are pros and cons but it shouldn't keep anyone away from this really strong series.

Pros:
- The world building is expanded with travel away from Migo's and Katsi's home, and the reader gets a glimpse of the bigger planet.

- It's another quick read, good pacing, and very few spots where I wish it moved faster. The few spots where that happened were all fight scenes - not to say that they are written poorly, because they aren't, I just wasn't the right frame of mind to read them at the time.

- I felt that the magic system/structure is slightly more fleshed out in book two, and it helped a lot.

- The characters are still strong. Remembering that they are both still teenagers, one could expect bravado mixed with moments of self-doubt.

- It's still clean fantasy. I'm not critical of fantasy reads that aren't, but still, this is a nice change of pace and may open the genre to younger readers. Is a very slow burning enemies to lovers? We'll have to see in book three.

Cons:
- I wanted to give this a five star review but for a too similar turn in the book to another series. IYKYK.

- THAT CLIFFHANGER! Ok this isn't a serious con but still, the ending makes me wish I had book three at the ready to finish the tale (thankfully rumor has it that book three will be out early 2024).

All in all, this is another strong, enjoyable book from Brady Hunsaker.

OMG! WOW! What a completely enticing but devastatingly elusive continuation of the Ringdweller Series! I mean this book was one glorious twist, turn, revelation, false hope, false lead, and hidden danger after another. It kept me on the edge of my seat, eyes staring at my phone until they blurred until the very last page…and what an absolutely game changing last page it was!

Katsi and Migo have gone their separate ways…or at least they think they have. But mysterious circumstances and assassination have brought them together again. Now they must trust one another as they follow a cryptic map that will lead them down a path of death, destruction, crazy wicked magic, mysterious artifacts, hellacious beast, betrayal, and bleeder magic.

All the while Hatan is putting out fires if his own as he takes up his place as Regent. Can he trusts those he thinks he can? Or will he be betrayed before Migo returns?

I love so many things about this book. I appreciate all the little details that Hunsaker has embedded within his story and world that really makes his characters come alive. One of these is Hatan and his love of sweets and even baking. This little detail really makes Hatan come alive not just a character but as a well rounded individual. Another aspect of this book that was absolutely top notch was Katsi’s little (or not so little anymore) lizard—Scales. He is an overprotective, completely sweet, but do not mess with my mistress kind of creature that had me dazzled and laughing the whole way through.

And then there is the Romance! Hunsaker’s slow burn romance is nothing short of perfection! Just enough to draw you in and keep you hoping for the next wayward glance or accidental touch, but not so much to push the story over the romantasy cliff. This series is the quintessential balance of epic fantasy and slow burn romance. And I AM ALL FOR IT

This my fellow readers is an AMAZING series! And I’m just completely dumbstruck by how ingenious and captivating it is. That ending though! How am I going to make it until book three?! Uuuuuuugggggghhhhhhh! This is one book that is going to be at the VERY TOP of my TBR! And it should be on yours too!

Like the first book in the series, this has an interesting story with a few surprising twists (some characters seem good but aren't, the magic expands, there are new creatures to face). I like Migo, Katsi, and Hatan too.
But the story suffers from underdeveloped characters and a rushed feeling (the characters are thrust into new situations in minutes instead of days or weeks). We also lose the sense that Migo and Katsi have feelings for each other at a couple points--I have the impression this is fantasy-romance.
Katsi is learning about her shaman powers after carrying out a second assassination. She is told by Alishara to go to Mazanib where she will find guidance. Along the way she runs into trouble but luckily gets rescued. Her magic progresses to the point that she can fly and control elements in nature.
Migo is on a mission to discover who killed his father. He is crowned King, then quickly leaves with Katsi to try to figure out what happened. Two soldiers, Rivar and Emil accompany them for part of the way. Migo must use his military training to protect Katsi, then join with another army.
Hatan, Migo's cousin, is left in charge and works to discover who are traitors in Jehubal. He is fairly clever and also a good fighter. We meet a number of nobles, some of whom are evil and some who are good. Hatan wants to make the kingdom safe for Migo when he returns.
Once Katsi and Migo get to Mazanib, they both, separately meet Alyssad, Emperor of the land and Adrina, a skilled shaman who can train Katsi.
The story moves quickly (almost too much so) and the travels and new characters add more depth to the story. But I felt like I only knew the characters from what the author tells us, rather than organically. A few times, the author used terms that didn't seem to fit the ancient time period (manager, ventilation).
Hunsaker clearly has been inspired by popular fantasy and has some creative ideas. I just felt that writing just needs some polishing.

Migo is now the King. Katsi has now been accepted by the Shamans. Migo is now on a mission to find out who murdered his father and what it was his father was searching for. Katsi wants to travel to find another storm caller to teach her about her magic. Their paths will not only cross again, but their missions will take them to the same place as well.
Now that Migo is king, there is peace between the kingdom and the shamans. But he still must figure out what his father was searching for. Leaving Hatan in charge as regent, we also learn that not everyone in the kingdom is happy that Migo is king. There is a plot to rid the Kingdom of the Ricadian line and instill someone else as ruler.
Katsi is still coming into her powers, but is finding out just how powerful she really is. And she is questioning why she is being told to do things. She is tired of being a puppet and I love that she is growing a spine. Migo is just as besotted with Katsi as before and it truly shows in this book. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that he is only a teenager still. He has been though so much in his short life and has so much responsibility but does not run away from it.
I enjoyed getting to hear about things from Hatan’s POV as well. He’s definitely a reluctant regent but tries his best to keep the kingdom running. Not made for politics, he has trouble sorting out the political machinations going on around him and it gets him into some hot water for sure.
There are plot twists and epic battles to keep you engaged in this book the whole time! Especially at then end where we get so many reveals, it had my head spinning! All the “truths” from one character or another is giving me whiplash as I try to figure out what is really going on and who should be trusted! I’ve listened to this series on audio and want to continue, but idk if I can wait for the next one to come out to find out what happens next!

I really wanted to give this book a 4.5 stars, but as that isn't an option it's a four.

I enjoyed the quick action and high stakes in this novel, and to see how Katsi and Migo's relationship is grow. The twists and turns this novel makes it fun as a reader as I'm always guessing at who the real "bad guys" are.

I thought the development of Katsi's character was fairly strong and the development of her powers was intriguing as it makes you wonder how far she'll go.

Another thing I appreciated about this novel compared to book 1 was the lack of exposition. It was still there, but I didn't feel like it took away from the story like it did in the first book.

Here are the reasons I couldn't give this book a 5 star rating:

1) The inciting incident wasn't as developed as I would have liked. Katsi and Migo meet over an assassination and there was no real emotional impact to the characters. It should have caused some heated words or lingering emotions of mistrust or a greater something that starts them on their journey.

2) We don't really get to see Migo grow in his role as king. He's just been handed the title in book 1 but we see no growth in this aspect of his character. In general, he has a fairly static arc, and for a main character I would like to see more growth.

3) I would like to see the author spend more time allowing the reader to really feel what the characters feel and experience their insecurities and struggles. This would mean not moving on to the next scene as quickly, which Hunsaker is good as moving the plot along, but I would like to have more depth at each major story beat so that when we reach the end, it doesn't feel like such a whiplash with the cliffhanger.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and think Hunsaker's writing is engaging and fun. I would recommend this book if you love fast-paced action, slow-burn romance, and elemental magic.

Emoji Recap

Book 2 of the Ringdweller series is a YA fantasy based on a world tidally locked with limited habitable space. Those with magic and those without have been battling for centuries blaming each side for the state of the world. With limited resources tensions are high.

Our poor me princeling, Migo, has taken his place on the throne as King and he intends to create a balance of peace between his people and the magical shaman, but first he must find out who assassinated his father.

The peaceful shaman, Katsi, has taken her first life and despite her best efforts it appears she’ll have to continue wielding her power in ways she never wanted to. But will she allow herself to be used as a tool for good or bad?

Placed back on a path together Migo & Katsi must work together to uncover secrets that will change the course of their lives forever.

Someone wants Migo dead
Someone wants Katsi for her power
Will these two learn who is out to ruin them before it’s too late, before the world is ravaged by a greater force than they have ever seen?

I enjoyed this second installment and getting back into the world of the Ringdwellers. The setting and creatures in this series are wholly unique and discovering new beings a long the way had me clamoring for more! With epic battles, lots of pastries, secrets and espionage I was hooked. Katsi and Migo’s attraction to each other is adorable and a slow burn is very fitting for the relationship development.

I LOVED seeing Migo’s growth and outgrowing his self loathing ways and becoming one with purpose and hope. Katsi’s reluctance to do hard things while coming into her own powers has me cheering for each new thing she unlocks.

We’re not even going to touch Scales and what he’s becoming…but I 👏AM👏HERE👏 FOR 👏IT

OK so the second I finished book 1 I jumped straight into book 2.

I've completely fallen in awe with the universe the author hascreated, and based on the title I HAD to know what was happening to our boy.

I spent the entire book getting insanely attached to a few characters and so now I'm scared....... Because I know I'm gonna lose someone 🥺

Okay the story, we've got undeniable pull between our two mains Migo and Katsi, but they are both having to deal with their own pressures and the confusions that come with it, which is perfect since we are talking about traumatized teens here.

Their moments of truth and vulnerability are beauty and heartwrenching.

I love that the story keeps me guessing, constantly throughout you KNOW shit is not as it seems, and that there will be shenanigans..... But the author still manages to surprise you!!!!

The book is full of historical misunderstandings and prejudices, familial support and betrayals, found family and unexpected hobbies.

We love a warrior who can bake sweet treats..... Bat boys who? I said what I said.

It's the family parts for me..... That family can nurture you or break you, family doesn't have to be blood (Kyel) , and the truth that your family doesn't define you (Emil & Rivar)

Can I have my own pet Scales please?

Lastly..... THE CLIFFHANGER.

If the third book wasn't coming out next month I think I would riot.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ok ok ok. World building is still one of my FAVORITE things about this series. The world is wonderfully creative, beautifully described, and wildly unique.

If you're looking for a fast paced adventure with banter, animal sidekicks, slow burn tension, unique magic systems, and a strong FMC and MMC, please PLEASE pick up this series - but start with the first in the series, obviously.

Migo is quickly growing into his new role, and has a moral compass that is ALMOST too just (he did hire Katsi to...IYKYK). He is a fairly serious person, considering his age, and I really enjoyed the scenes where we were able to see the glimpses of Migo as a person, not just Migo as the King/Captain/Strength of his people.

Katsi is still unapologetically herself, and I am here for it. Her personality is such a contrast to Migo, and the scenes in which they are simply being two young people not trying to save the world are natural, light, and fun. Even her interactions with Emil and Rivar are charming in their own "Katsi inspired" way. Exploding fruit, anyone?

Scales though, epic. He has the personality of Pascal from Tangled, only he's more "stabby".

Hatan is my favorite supporting character in the series (sorry, Scales), because he is this warrior, advisor to the King, could unalive you with a spoon (probably), yet the man loves pastry....HE BAKES. Not only does he bake, he takes great pride in his baking, it's adorable. I need merch that's themed around Hatan's pastry.

Cursed King is the second installment of the ringdweller series by Brady Hunsaker. Just like book 1 this is a clean ya epic fantasy novel that has lots to offer.

It's just one of those books you can't help but devour in no time. After the events of the first book, all I wanted was for Migo and Katsi's paths to cross again. The chemistry between those two characters was off the roof and I wanted more. As luck will have it, they meet again. The world is trying to pin them against each other.
With Migo being a ringdweller and Katsi being a shaman. A stormcaller no less, it looks like the odds are against them.

Now that Migo is king, he has to convince the people. He and Katsi know there is another way. A peacefull way. A way to live together despite all the lies they have been thaught about one another throughout the years.
So what will he do? He will bring peace between his people and the shamans. Or he will die trying.
All he needs is for Katsi to help him one last time.

Will they get it done? Are they able to work together despite their differences? Read to find out!

This fast-paced, thrilling and highly entertaining ya fantasy is a must read!
Can't wait for the second book!

P.S. When everything becomes stressfull you can allways rely on Hatan and Scales to brighten your mood!

The story of Katsi and Migo continues. After the murder of his mother, Migo has become the King. He finds his father Journal and wants to find out by who his father was killed. Katsi meets a shaman woman, a sheer, in the canyon. She can learn Katsi how to deal with her magical power of Stormcalling. The woman send her to an other stormcaller, but before that Katsi needs to do something so that the peace will not be destroyed. She need to assassinate someone and stay away from Migo.

Katsi and Migo meet each other again. But there is somebody who are against them. Instead of avoiding each other they team up to find out who is after them.

I really love how Brady had written this story. The chapters are short and easily read. I almost couldn't stop reading. I love how the power of Katsi is getting stronger and that not everything goes right in the beginning. There is again a lot of action , but there is also information. This is perfect.

The feelings of Katsi and Migo are very realistic. A lot of insecurities in their growing love. Because the point of view is alternating between Katsi en Migo, I have known them both better and they have a place in my heart. But the biggest place is for Scales!

The ending is a giant plottwist and I can't wait to read part 3. I hope I can be an ARC-reader again

*Beta Review*

Brady Hunsaker proves again, in this second installment of the Ringdweller series, that he understands exactly what readers want in a fantasy series. Further expanding on the immersive world he created in “Scorned Prince”, the reader is delivered head first into the unique world once again through fast paced story telling.
Brady’s writing style allows the reader to effortlessly understand this unique world without it being completely dull, avoiding the common mistake in fantasy novels, information dumping. He expands on the already established world in the first book, and beautifully builds upon this in this second installment. one of my favorite parts of this book was learning of Katsi’s potential with her magic- wielding.
With a slow burn romance amongst the two main characters, Katsi and Migo, there is something for everyone in this clean YA fantasy world.
I also think the parallels between Migos heritage, katsi heritage, and their burning enemies to lovers romance is so clever. They live in a society of hate and division between magic weilders versus non magic weilders. Leaving Migo and Katsi to pave a new way.

This novel was so well written and i will continue to recommend this series to anyone who enjoys YA fantasy.

I was a part of the ARC group again for this book, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

One of my concerns about the last series was the lack of sensorial experience and context building. Some things were too direct, and the transitions occasionally too abrupt. With the first scene in Cursed King, I was already impressed by the growth Hunsaker showed in his creation of the important details that really SHOW a scene.

I felt like the characters, especially Migo, showed more depth and development, which I appreciated. I also enjoyed exploring the world and magic more, as they create the environment within which all the drama takes place, and I feel is an essential key to a successful novel.

Katsi's development of her skills and wrestling with herself, who she is and who others expect her to be, demonstrates Hunsaker's commitment to realistic and authentic main characters, which is another plus for this series.

There are still areas I would have liked to see explored more, or that felt a teensy bit abrupt, but I applaud Brady for his growth as a writer and his development of this story. The twists and cliffhanger reeled me in by the end in ways Scorned Prince did not. I look forward to reading the final installment soon!

Overall, this is a very entertaining novel and well written. I really enjoyed the multiple POVs and seeing the different dilemmas that were taking place. There wasn't really any character development in this one. My only real complaint is that towards the last few chapters felt a little rushed.

Plot is really good. Subplot kind of got lost this time around, but the plot is solid so it holds. This is a little more of a personal preference as I really enjoyed the romance aspect.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as book 1, but I look forward to book 3.

The Ringdweller Series has been such a wonderful adventure into a fantasy world filled with characters I didn’t even know I needed in my life! I loved the first book and just finished Cursed King! It did not disappoint!

I am a huge fan of Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation and Katara of the Water Tribe from Avatar the Last Airbender and this book reminded me so much of that world and those two characters in particular! I love the ending of Avatar don’t get me wrong, but my OTP for the series is Zuko and Katara!

***Minor Spoilers Ahead***

I found myself greatly enjoying this book as it gave me the same kind of love story I wanted in Avatar but in a new world with rich characters and getting to watch Migo’s Journey to find fathers killer from years ago as he enlists the help of Katsi once again who is now searching for a way to learn more about and develop her powers as a Stormcaller! Together they embark on an incredible journey towards the truth and what it will cost them both!

With the ending of this book setting up for very similar story elements to Beauty and The Beast! I cannot wait to read the next one! It looks like it will be the most epic of them all!! I’m so excited!! 5 star read for me!!
