About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

அப்சரா - A Typical சுஜாதா style Thriller

1.கதை அதன் கருக்களம் எல்லாமே பெங்களூரை சுற்றியே நடக்கும்.

2.பேர் தெரியாத பிரபலமான ஆங்கில புத்தகம் மற்றும் கதாசிரியர்களை அறிமுகபடுத்துவார்.

3.ஜாவா, கோபால், பைனரி என்று கணினி சம்பந்தப்பட்ட வார்தைகள் அதிகம் புழங்கும்.

4.எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக கதாநாயகி பிரா அணிந்திருக்காளா இல்லயா என்பதை ஒரு வரியிலாவது விவரிக்காமல் விடமாட்டார். ரசிகர்களின் பல்ஸ் தெரிந்தவர்.

“உள்ளே பிரா இருக்கிறதா இல்லயா என்பது சந்தேகத்துக்கு இடமாக இருந்தது. அவள் ஒருமுறை குனிந்தபோது பார்த்தான். உள்ளுடை ஏதுமில்லை.”

5.ஆங்கில வார்த்தைகள் கன்னா பின்னாவென்று ஆங்காங்கு வந்து விழுந்திருக்கும்.

6.கதையின் நாயகி அல்லது ஏதாவது ஒரு பெண் கதையில் அறிமுகபடுத்தும்போது கண்டிப்பாக அவள் அழகை பற்றி ஒரு பத்து வரிக்கு குறையாமல் எழுதியிருப்பார்.

7.கதையின் நாயகன் மனநலம் குன்றி, பெண்களையோ குழந்தைகளையோ கடத்தி கொள்வானேன் என்றால், அதன் பின்புலமாக நாயகனின் அம்மாவின் நடத்தை ஒரு காரணமாக இருக்கும்.

ஒரு நல்ல Psychological thriller. ஒரு சிறுவன் தான் வளர்கிற சூழலில் இருந்து எதிர்கொள்கிற முரண்பாடுகள், உளவியல் தாக்கங்கள் என்பவை அவன் வளர்ந்தபிறகு அவனை சைக்கோவாக எப்படி மாற்றுகிறது என்பதைச் சொல்லுகிறது கதை. சுஜாதா பாணியில் Investigations ( கணேஷ்- வசந்த் இல்லை) என்று பின்பாதி வேகமாக நகருகிறது. மிகுதி விஷயங்களை படிச்சு தெரிஞ்சுக்கோங்க :)

A Harmless & Time Pass read !

This one is pretty short and can be finished in a day or 2 max. Fell short of my expectations considering this is from Sujatha. The Story starts well and the narration goes on in an interesting pace. However, the ending feels very much hurried and the way the culprit is nailed doesn't seem convincing.

Nevertheless, can be read on a casual afternoon or on a short travel to kill time !

This is my first read of sujatha. Writing of this novel feels so clumsy and sometimes tough to understand which characters is speaking. Even the plot wise also it doesnt have a great story building or tension building. Personally this novels feels so dry for me.

Decent read! Definitely a better read at 1977, but less so now. The Tamil movie “Sigappu Rojakkal” seems to be inspired from this short story.

Time pass read.. !

Likes:
- Sujatha's typical non-linear style narration
- Use of technology (COBOL, random number generation etc etc)
- Old Bangalore charm

Not so good:

- Was able to predict the storyline in the middle
- Doesn't give a "wow" feel

Recommended for die hard Sujatha fans who wants to increase the count of his title.

This book introduced me to Sujatha's writings. We can't say that Apsara is a science fiction but it has a small element of science in it. 'Technology' is the main character in this novel and it spices up the plot. The description of each and every crime scene is so catchy and it made me stick on to the novel. I read it at one go. It's a great book for one who wants to get a hang of modern Tamil literature.
